"I'm fine! I just need to get up and…" As she sat up,
the room began to spin, and she fell back, weak, and shaky.

"Stay there. I called your mother. She told me to
take you home. If you won't go home, I'm taking you to the
hospital."

"Victor! I can't believe you haven’t figured out yet
that I don't like to be bullied around."

He smiled.

"Look, Wiley, I won't push you into dating me if this
is what it does to you. Let me take you home, please."

She noted the chagrin on his face, and smiled
back.

"All right. Take me home. I'll admit that I don't
feel well. My doctor makes house calls, if you can believe that in
this day and age."

The paramedic gathered up his things, and called out
to his partner. "She's not coming with us. Let's get going."

"Sorry to bother you. I didn't faint on purpose."

He studied her for a moment, and then said, "Lady,
I'm not a doctor, but from what your friend tells me, you've been
burning the candle at both ends. You appear to be exhausted. Get
lots of rest, and make sure you see your doctor."

"Yes, sir. I'm on it. Thanks for your help."

Once the man stood up and left them, Victor leaned
over and picked her up in his arms. Before she could protest, he
gave her a warning glare.

"Shut up, Wiley, and let me do my job. You're mother
is worried about you, and you're in no shape to walk. Having three
jobs is incredibly hard to do, but you're doing four, plus helping
take care of your sister. You burned yourself out. If I were your
boyfriend, I'd turn you over my knee and spank you."

She couldn't help but laugh at him. Even with the
room spinning, she managed to keep her sense of humor.

"Victor, you know it will never happen. I'm sorry,
but you just aren't for me. Look, you're a handsome, sweet, kind
man. You deserve better than me. Find someone who makes your heart
sing."

He bent and placed her carefully on his car seat.
Though Wiley appreciated his tender care, she knew she'd never date
him, nor would she have a relationship with him other than as
friends. Ryder wouldn't give her a break. She couldn't stop
thinking of him. His kindness with her family showed what a
terrific man he was. She frowned. He was rich and handsome. Not
only that, but he'd lied to her about who he was.

I can't have a relationship with a man who lies.
However, he is everything I want in a man, except for his
unfortunate good looks and money.

Pain radiated from her heart at the loss. She'd
fallen in love with him, no matter what her brain told her. Aching
to have his arms around her, she settled back in her seat and kept
her gaze out the window so Victor wouldn't see the brimming tears
in her eyes. After a few shuddering breaths, she had more control
and smiled up at him.

"Thank you for doing this for me. I'll come by
tomorrow and finish clean—"

"You will rest all day tomorrow or I'll…I'll…I don't
know what I'll do, but you won't like it. I have a good mind to
spank your bum."

He fell silent all of a sudden as though the idea
intrigued him. She could tell by the way his lips formed a smile
then tightened into a grimace. She wished she could have fallen for
him, but it wasn't meant to be.

They pulled up in the driveway of the town house, and
stopped.

"Stay put," he said, his voice a low growl. Walking
around the car, he opened her door and carried her into the house.
She didn't protest and allowed him to take her to her room, her
mother hot on their heels.

"I told you that you were working too hard, Wiley.
Why don't you ever listen to reason?"

She only shrugged and remained silent. When her
mother did her "I told you so." speech, Wiley knew that nothing she
said would stop her from fussing.

Victor placed her on her bed and stood up,
frowning.

"You stay there until you feel well. Do you
understand me?"

"Yes, Victor," she said, crossing her fingers under
the blankets to hide the lie.

His eyes narrowed. "You never agree with me when I
tell you what to do. What's going on?"

She widened her eyes as though innocent and smiled at
him.

"I am tired. I'll see you soon. Goodbye, Victor." For
good measure she yawned and rubbed her eyes.

It appeared he was satisfied with her lies. Victor
nodded, and then left the house, leaving her mother at her bedside.
Before Wiley could stand up, her mother glared at her, pushing her
back on the pillows.

"You'd better stay there, or I'll call him back."

Exhausted, she sighed. "All right, mom, but I do it
in protest. I'm fine."

"You're sick. Ever since you came home from Toronto,
you've been acting weird." She studied Wiley's smile. "Okay then,
weirder than normal. I think you're missing Ryder."

"Of course not. He's just a friend now."

"You kid yourself, Wiley, but I know what I see, and
I think you're in love with him."

Hiding her face in the pillow to hide her tears,
Wiley grumbled, "I'm tired. I think I'll take a nap."

"All right, but you'd better behave or I'll call
Victor again.

Her mother fell silent for a moment when Wiley didn't
respond to her threat.

"Wiley, why don't you call him?"

She knew her mother meant Ryder, but refused to even
think about it.

"This is me, sleeping, Mom. I'll be up for dinner
later. Goodbye, Mother."

Soft footsteps on the wood floor told Wiley her
mother had left the room. Tears began to dampen the pillow as she
let her emotions flow.

As she thought about Ryder, she finally came to
realize that she was lost without him."I should have given him the
benefit of the doubt. I shut him down, and didn't give him a
chance. What an idiot I am."

Crying softly, she finally dozed off, only to dream
about him.

Chapter 8
Pride
Goeth…

"Oh, wow, what beautiful flowers!"

Wiley sighed. "They are, but there's no card. Do you
think they're from Victor?"

Nat snorted. "I sincerely doubt it. He's never bought
you flowers in all the years you've known him. I've heard through
the grapevine that he hasn't got a romantic bone in his body."

"Then who?"

A smile graced Nat's face as she answered. Wiley
noticed a soft faraway look in her eyes.

"Maybe they're from—"

"No! Don't say it. They can't be from him."

"Why not? He's a true romantic. Anyone who'd go out
of their way like he did for you and your family is the perfect
man. He's a wonderful guy to buy you flowers and candy. What a nice
touch."

"It can't be from him. We broke up. We didn't even
really have a relationship. He lied to me, he…oh, I don't know
anymore."

"Wiley, don't you think you should give him another
chance? After all, he's a rich man. Maybe he disguised himself so
that women wouldn't want him for his awesome good looks and money.
He could have simply been protecting himself, couldn't he?

"Well…"

"Come on, don't you think it's possible? If I were
extremely wealthy, I'd be a little unsure of a person who I got
involved with. Would they want me for my riches and a gorgeous
body, or would they want me for me?"

Wiley nearly cried out loud when she realized what
she'd been doing.

"Oh, God. Nat, what if I'm wrong? What if…I turned
him down because I was afraid of what he could offer me? When he
was balding and ordinary, I liked him a lot. Now I think I'm in
love with him. What am I going to do?"

Someone knocked on the bedroom door.

"Come on in, Mom," Wiley said, heartbroken.

The door slowly opened, and Wiley felt her mouth drop
open.

"Hi."

Nat suddenly stood up. "I'm going to go…somewhere
else." She slipped out the door past the unexpected guest, and
giggled. "See you soon." She closed the door behind her leaving
Wiley alone with him.

"Wiley, I know you're angry with me, but I can't get
you out of my mind. I think about you day and night. I love you,
honey. Please, give me another chance?"

"Another chance? The minute you opened that door, you
had me. I'm sorry I gave you such a hard time. I love you, Ryder. I
love you."

Tears flowed down her hot cheeks as she raised her
arms. He moved toward her, his eyes filled with love. They were
destined to be together.

Serafina laughed and clapped her hands in delight,
while Zan grinned ear-to-ear. Nigel was in a very bad mood.

"You won this round, angels, but the next one is
mine!" Nigel said, frowning.

Serafina pointed her finger away from her. "Now you
can get lost. We've won and you've lost fair and square. This
couple will be together for good, through thick and thin.

Nigel snarled, "That's what you think. I'll be back,
and you'll see that love doesn't conquer all.

Amidst more laughter and joy, Seraphina stared him
down.

"There is no stronger power than that of true
love."

"We'll see," Nigel said, disappearing.

Zan looked over at Sera in concern, but she was
pleased with the outcome.

"We didn't have to do much with those two. That is
true love."

Again, Zan shook his head. "Something tells me we
haven't seen the last of Nigel. Looking at the couple, it makes me
feel good. We've won, Sera."

She smiled. "They won. Wiley and Ryder have found
what they were looking for. True love can blind a person. No fear,
my friend. We'll simply have to watch over them for life. It is our
job after all.

The duo watched as Ryder took Wiley into his arms and
sealed their fate with a kiss.

Since 2002, after a serious breakdown, Franny had to
express herself on the computer since she couldn’t speak,
everything coming out gibberish at that time. She’s slowly healed

Franny loves to write about rainforests and
