With the locket, there’s a note in shaky handwriting.

Heathcliff? Did he save this bit of the book somehow? Does he live still?
And where did he learn to write?
I grab the package wrappings off the floor and see the sent date. It was the day before yesterday. Heathcliff is alive! Here’s definitive proof.
“Who’s H?” Lindsay asks, looking over my shoulder.
“No one,” I say.
I fold up the piece of paper, put it in the necklace, and put the necklace around my neck. He’s given me his life — literally. This scrap of paper means he’s still connected to this world. I wonder if this means Emily Brontë is, too?
“That better not be from that boy — what’s his name — Tyler,” Mom says, looking stern. As if I’d have anything to do with Tyler ever again. Please. “And just

was that boy outside? You know my rules about dating, Miranda.”
“Uh-oh, Miranda’s in trouble again,” Lindsay says. “She’s going back to Bard!”
“I’m going back anyway, you nitwit,” I say. “Dad prepaid for the year and there aren’t any refunds.”
“Miranda, you know the rules,” Mom says, eyeing the locket and the letterman jacket I’m wearing. “No dates until you’re sixteen. And no boyfriends, either.”
I’m not quite sure how to tell Mom, but it looks like I don’t just have one boyfriend. I have two.
And I know one thing for sure. This is going to mean trouble in more ways than one when I get back to Bard next semester.
