in a relative path expression such as.//A, which (loosely speaking) selects all the descendant
elements of the context node. The.is necessary here because if the expression started with//, it would select all descendants of the root node. - On its own, to perform operations on the value of the context item. This usually arises in expressions such as.=3orstring-length(.)where we want to test the value of the context node, or in the XSLT instruction
Some people also like to use.for clarity at the start of a relative path expression such as./TITLE, but in fact this is precisely equivalent toTITLEon its own.
