Five-Oh
is a tangle that I created while dreaming of my next Hawaiian holiday. It is inspired by the big wave surf on Oahu’s North Shore. I’m also a fan of the TV show
Hawaii Five-0
(the new version), but felt the retro look of the tangle was also an acknowledgment of the original series.

Step 1: Create your pencil border on your Zentangle tile.
Step 2: Draw 3 long, thin bars in various lengths with rounded edges from one side of the tile. In the example, I have chosen to draw left to right, but there is no reason you cannot adapt this to any direction.
Step 3: Draw another fine line around each bar, doubling the bar. Your bars will become wider and rounder at the ends as you add more lines.
Step 4: Continue to add more lines until each wave meets up.
Step 5
Once each wave has connected, start a new wave on the end of the existing waves. These, too, should be various lengths.
Step 6: Continue building new waves at various heights until you feel that the waves are complete.
Step 7: When you have finished your waves, shade your tangle, remembering that the areas you shade will make the immediate white areas around it pop out more. See
Shading Zentangles
for tips about shading.
Tip
Make the bars different lengths for visual interest, like waves coming into the shore. The unevenness is part of the beauty.
You can start them at the very middle of the arc, but also try putting them off-center. If you look at my example, some second and third waves are centered and some are not. When you move from the center, some lines might extend down the side of your first waves. This is fine; in fact, it gives the tangle a better sense of ocean waves.

Starfish
is an easy tangle that was inspired by collage pages I have by mixed-media legend Teesha Moore. Being another ocean-inspired tangle, it will work beautifully with
Five-Oh
.

Step 1: Create your pencil border on your Zentangle tile.
Step 2: Create a 5-point pentagon using curved lines inward. These don’t need to be perfectly even, but do try to keep them relatively even. I practiced this with pencil on scrap paper until I was able to draw the shape consistently.
Step 3: Connect 2 points of the pentagon using a cone shape.
