Epilogue

Jayn sat at her computer and checked her email.  She finally had one from one of the women who had been members of the community but sold off just as she had. 
“So happy to hear that you’re doing well, Jayn.  I do think we’re all fortunate to have been able to get out into the real world.  I would love for us all to get together soon, too.  The other girls would be amenable.  I asked them.  We should wait another month or two, though, because Sarah’s having her auction next month.  She will want to be part of it.”

Jayn sat back in her chair with a smile.  Sarah was going to be auctioned off as well? 
Really?  Sarah had always been perfect.  All the boys in school had been interested in her, but she’d never so much as gone on a walk alone with one of them.  Was she leaving because she was being punished?  Or of her own accord?

She put her fingers to the keyboard and wrote back, asking just that.

Sarah rested her forehead against the window pane, watching as the children played outside.  No one spoke to her.  She was treated as if she were a leper.  She hadn’t chosen to be auctioned off, but she was accepting her fate.  And what did it get her? 
The silent treatment from the whole community. 

She sighed.  She hated being alone.  Two more days, though.  Two more days, and she’d be married. 
To four men.  She clenched her thighs together.  Could she handle what that meant?
