A month after the funeral, Sarah received an unexpected phone call while at work.

“Mrs. Giltry. You have a phone call on line two. It’s a Mr. Johnny Davis.”

“Thank you”

“Hi
.
Johnny.”

“It’s probably not wise to contact you so soon after Jared
’s
funeral, but I need to talk with you.”

“What do you want Johnny
?

“I have signed up to participate in your
fundraiser
golf tournament
.

“That’s nice of you
.
I wonder if your wife is aware
of
this call.”

“She doesn’t know.
That being said
, Vera and I would like you to know, you can
always
count
on us
.

“David
,
I think you are talking more on your behalf than that of your wife. I am glad you signed up for the tournament, but you need to give me more time. I don’t
know
if I can
continue
handl
ing
being your
m
istress
while at the same time being a friend to your wife.
Maybe we can talk
when
I’m through moaning the loss of my husband.”

“I’m sorry, Sarah. Take all the time you need.”

“Bye Johnny.”

“Bye Sarah.”

Sarah buzzed Chris on the phone. “I

m ready
fo
r our meeting.

“I’ll be right in.”

A minute later, he pee
k
ed into her office, as she looked up from her paperwork.

“Come in.” After he sat, she stated, “What’s the latest on the castle renovation?”

“Everything is on schedule.
The
Titanimums and their hired hands will
be
mov
ing
out
into
their new mansion, in a couple of weeks
.”

“I think that
is
a good move on their part, not to be live in proprietors
.”

Sarah telephoned her mother
in
law,
“Hi
Mrs. Jones. How are you?”

“Sarah. Why are you calling?
I am still tr
y
ing to come to
grips
with the loss of my son. My son was killed for no apparent reason.
My boy was
shot
,
burned
, and
then pushed in his car
over
into a
retention pond
.
When we last
met
, I blamed you for his death. I still blame you for his death. How could you have done such a thing?”

“Maybe one day, you will understand how much I loved your son.”

That aft
ernoon, Sarah
was relaxing in her
j
acuzzi
, when
her cell phone rang.
After

she
answered
.

This is Sarah Giltry speaking
.

“Mrs. Giltry,
I

m
Dallas Police
D

Fred Thompson
. How are you?”

“I am do
ing
fine.
How may I help you?

“I

m
calling
to question you regarding an a

leged bribery.”

Excuse me, detective.
May I place you on hold? I have another call.”

“Sure.”

“Hello.”

“Hi Sarah
, t
his is Johnny.”

“I’ll have to call you back.
I have a detective on hold
.
He wants to question me.

“Take care
,
Sarah. I’ll talk to you later.”

“Okay detective
, I’m back.”

The detective
resumed speaking
. “
I
would like to know if you had any dealings with
a
Mr.
V.
Jay Armstrong
.

“No Sir. I have never heard of anyone by that name.”

“I’m also thinking you may have introduced your business partner Mr. Brisband to Johnny Davis.”

“They may have met. I’m not sure.”

“Can you explain your relationship with Johnny Davis and how long you’ve known him?”

“We first met in
c
ollege. Every since then we’ve been friends.”

“We believe you may have taken a trip to Malibu Beach
where you met
with him
to ce
l
ebrate the awarding of a government contract.
Johnny Davis cast the deciding vote on
a
buildings renovation project
. You
benefited from the decision
as a subcontractor.”

“It wasn
’t
a celebrat

. We were vacatio

ing
.

“Thanks Sarah.
We will keep in touch.”

“Sure Detective
Thompson
,
I am always available if you have further questions.”

A few days later
,
Sarah spoke with Johnny on the phone
,
they
made plans
to
meet
up in Dallas
the following month
at a
yet to be d

Woodrow and Bridgett
finalized the
details for their
inaugural
gala to be held at their Billio
n
aire’s Retreat.

The
date
for the fundraiser named in honor of Jared Jones was fast approaching. Five days prior to the event, Sarah arrived in Dallas. She immediately
called Johnny. After determining they would be
free of any
afternoon
engag
e
men
ts, she said they should meet
a park in the downtown area.
He took her up on the sugge
s
tion.

During their meeting, Johnny stated
he too had been questioned by D
etective
Fred Thompson
.

“Johnny
,
I hope we didn’t provide conflic
t
ing answers to his
questions
.
I kept denying having any bribery knowledge.

“Good g
irl. I knew you could be trusted u
n
der fire.”

After a brief pause, she
said
,
“Johnny it has been a while. I know how much you want me and I really want you to have me.”

Oh,
Come on
,
Sarah. You must know our every move is suspect. We are taking a risk by meeting here today.”
He could tell she was
displeased with his response.
“Okay. I give in. However, we have to be discrete. They agreed to meet at a hotel
several miles
from the park.

Upon returning to her car, she waived bye to Johnny. She then checked for messages on her cell phone and noticed a text from Vera. The message simply said I know you are in town. Call me.
She wondered if Vera had found out about her and Johnny. Then she suddenly snapped back to reality
,
Vera
was
merely
sa
y
ing they should meet
as soon as possible
. A
fter all, she had told her she would be in town.

A
t the hotel, dinner was ordered in for two. After
d
inner, a
love feast
was
ignited. Sarah unabashedly and willingly gave into Johnny’s sexual fantas
ies
he’d been harboring every since their last romantic encounter
in
Malibu Beach.  She urged him on physically and v
o
cally with every erogenous act performed.

At a community country club tucked away in a suburb of L
os Angeles, Jared Jones’
First A
n
nual Golf
Tournament was
well underway. A
f
ter the first four
holes
of play, Councilman Johnny
Davis had a 2
point lead over his clo
s
est competitor. Vera was proud of her hu
s
band and could be heard bragging to fellow
committ
ee members about
his performance

On the perimeter of the golf course the news media suddenly appeared. A few minutes la
t
er, a couple of
l
aw
e
nforcement
o
fficers a
r
rived. They exited their cruisers being fo
l
lowed closely by news reporters. Johnny was about to tee off on the fifth hol
e
when he n
o
ticed the
m
approaching
.
He was placed under arrest
and charged with accepting a bribe for his vote on a government contract and also for money laundering.
Vera’s joyous day suddenly was transformed into one of the worse days of her life.

Within an hour of Johnny’s arrest, the p
o
lice and the news media converged on the sky scrapper where Brisband Construction
was located.

The police proceeded up the elevator to
Harry Brisband’s office. He was then placed under arrest for bribery
.

That night
,
Sarah show
ed
up to Vera’s house. The doorbell r
ang
. She
look
ed
through the peephole
.
Vera open
ed
the door and i
m
mediately started screaming at
Sarah
, “Get away from my door. Leave me alone bitch. You probably set
up
my Johnny
with Brisband and now he is in
jail
.

“No Vera. You don’t understand. Let me explain.”

“Sarah. Don’t make me do something
that
we will regret later.”

Sarah pull
ed
on the door trying to enter.

Vera blurted out, “Woman
,
are you crazy! Quit pulling on my door! Didn’t I tell you to leave?”

Sarah angrily turn
ed
away
,
quickly walked back to her car, entered
,
and
then
sped away.

Shortly after leaving Vera’s
,
she made a stop at her best friend
Lucinda’s house. Sarah franticly knocked on the door and rang the doorbell. Upon opening the door, Lucinda n
o
ticed tears streaming down her face.

“What’s wrong baby? Come in
. H
ave
a
seat.”

“I am not the person you think I am.

“What are you rambling on about Sarah?”

“I feel so out of control
. I
don’t know what to do. I have been having an affair with City Councilman Johnny Davis.”

“You’ve been doing what?
And who have you been doing it with?

“City Councilman Davis and I are lovers.  I’m also a friend to his wife, Vera. Today he was arrested for accepting a bribe. Vera su
s
pects that I am the reason for his arrest.”

“Why would she think that?”

“Because I
’m
a subcontractor on a constru
c
tion project that he is accused of being awar
d
ed illegally.”

“Hold your head up Sarah
. You must r
e
main
strong.

“Thanks. I’m glad somebody believes in me.”

She hands Sarah a box of facial tissues. “Wipe your eyes. You can stay with us
to
night.

“Are you sure David wouldn’t mind me staying over?”

I’m sure David will understand. You can stay in one of our guest bedrooms. You shouldn’t be alone
.”

The next afternoon
, Sarah took a
flight back to Los Angeles.
