Working the Cast On

Loop the yarn so that the working yarn is on top and the tail is underneath (the tail will be going to the left).

Using a crochet hook, reach through the loop, wrap the working yarn around the hook and pull it through the loop. Do not tighten up the loop.

Wrap the yarn around the hook again.

Pull it through the loop already on the hook. Yes, this is a single crochet. Leave it on the hook.

Repeat steps 2–4. Now you have 2 stitches.

Continue in this manner, reaching the hook through the big loop, pulling through a loop and then wrapping and pulling through to make a single crochet, until you have the desired number of stitches.

Beginning to Knit

Slide the stitches off the crochet hook, one at a time, onto double-point or circular needles to begin knitting in the round.
