Chapter One: Jack’s
Proposal

Jack placed with trembling hand the small black box onto the freshly made bed. Next to it he positioned the note he had written his girlfriend. Then Jack straightened out the cufflinks on his tuxedo and took one last glance around to make sure everything else in her apartment was in place. Satisfied and nervous, he stepped into her walk-in closet, shut the white louvered doors and adjusted the slats so that he could watch his plan unfold.

As he waited,
he imagined how Ashley would enter, probably looking fabulous as she always did even though she would be returning from her morning workout. She would be in a rush, of course, to get herself ready for his imminent arrival but would stop short at the sight of the single rose laid out on her kitchenette table. Next to it she would find the note he had written her:
Dear Ashley, here is the first of three surprises. Proceed to your bed where you will find the second…

S
he would go to the bed, curious, anxious, suspicious, and find the black box. She’d open it and gasp at the 24-carat diamond engagement ring inside. Then with her own hands trembling with elation she’d read the note next to it:
Dear Ashley, this is your second surprise. Last but not least, you will find your third surprise behind your closet doors...
She would understand by then, and her eyes welling up with emotion, Ashley would fling open her closet doors where she’d find him standing in his tuxedo, going down on one knee and asking,
“Ashley, will you marry me?”

Jack had a view into most of the
loft style apartment from the closet. There was a pillar that blocked part of her foyer but otherwise Jack had a clear view, from the nearby bed to the kitchen at the far end. Since this was his first vacation from dentistry school it was his first time visiting his girlfriend in the place she had been calling home for the past four months. It struck him how Ashley’s new home was so airy and drenched in California sunshine compared to their cramped Chicago pad. This felt like the home of a woman starting fresh, without any baggage, on a new joyous life journey while he, standing in the gloom of her closet in his black tuxedo trying to control his asthmatic wheezing, felt like he didn’t belong, like an antique ghost blown by cold winds from the deck of the Titanic.

But
Jack drove these creepy thoughts away. This was no time to further aggravate his already churning stomach because his dear beautiful Ashley, the love of his life, was turning the key to her apartment and coming home to him forever.

When he saw her
, Ashley took his breath away. She always did. Her wavy blond hair was done up in a sporty pony tail that bounced with the skip in her step as she energetically tossed her workout bag aside. At 5 foot 3 inches she was tall for Jack but petite to most other men. And to most men, her small frame combined with her unusually large, heart shaped butt made the mind go to shameful places.

T
hat big butt was on full display as she dipped down to collect a piece of mail that fell on the floor. Jack observed with a mix of disapproval and arousal that it did not appear she was wearing much more than a thong in her skintight Lululemon capris. As she did it, Ashley glanced back over her shoulder toward the foyer and smiled coyly. Jack wanted a penny for her thoughts, bent over like that and smiling. Her cute dimpled smile made Jack think of summer church picnics and high school pep rallies and all the good memories they shared together. Make-up wasn’t allowed growing up in their religious community but it seemed she had taken it up recently; her blue eyes were made ever more piercing today with a touch of eyeliner and mascara. The rest of her outfit wouldn’t have been allowed either, Jack noted primly; she wore a black half-tank top that pushed up her buoyant breasts, displaying an intoxicating dose of cleavage while leaving exposed her flat tummy down to the crest of her pelvis.

Jack
often felt that his otherwise wholesome Ashley would subconsciously invite hungry looks from strange men with the form fitting outfits she chose. He would have to talk to her about that, once she became his fiancé, but for now he would watch her with baited breath as she swiftly brought herself upright and made her way into the kitchen.

Ashley toss
ed her mail onto the kitchen counter as she turned to open her fridge door. She did not appear to notice the rose. Plus the mail landed, much to Jack’s dismay, right on top of his beautifully written note. Jack succeeded in keeping himself quiet as a mouse as he bit his fist, anxious for his plan to get back on track.

She emerged from the
fridge with two water bottles, placing them on the counter but once again not looking down to see the rose. Instead she turned to face the foyer, leaning her back onto the counter, reaching behind her head and removing her ponytail, shaking out her luxurious hair that landed at the middle of her back.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” She said with that smile.

Jack’s heart stopped. Had she seen him? Was his whole marriage proposal somehow compromised? How could she have known? And was he supposed to answer if she was still facing the entrance to her apartment?

The mystery was solved when from behind the pillar blocking Jack’s view of the entrance
came a low, masculine growl.

“You know why I’m looking at you like that.”

Jack thought the man’s response was a bit forward and he was pleased to see Ashley turn her back to the man while rolling her eyes.

“Give it a rest. You know I have a boyfriend.”

“I know. I just don’t care.”

The man stepped into the apartment and Jack was shocked
to see it was a black male of intimidating proportions. He was towering, broad shouldered and handsome in a kingly, majestic way. He too was in workout gear, his t-shirt sweaty around the collar and chest, like he had just returned from a run. His legs were lean and powerful. His arms were thick muscled biceps. Despite his size and strength, he walked up to Ashley with a dancer’s fluidity. This was a man who knew the samba.

As he approached her, Ashley spun back to face him, playfully poking a water bottle into his chest.

“Hold it right there, big fella. Take this Fiji bottle because it’s all you’re getting. Understand?”

The man stared down at her long enough for the moment to
get uncomfortable. Jack held his breath. This man seemed a tad aggressive, Jack fretted, but Ashley held her ground, cocking her eyebrow in the air as if in warning to some kind of unruly beast. Finally this stranger sullenly grabbed the water bottle, tore the cap off and guzzled heedlessly, his eyes glowering down at her like she was next on the menu.

Ashley
smirked and took a swig of her own water, good humoredly glowering right back at him. It was hard to tell from the closet but it seemed to Jack that these two were having some kind of a moment, a silent stand off, as they each quenched their thirst.

While he waited, Jack wondered a million things. Who was this
cad barging into his marriage proposal? And when would this brute finally leave?

Usually he was so meticulous with his plans
Jack should have anticipated this might happen. Ashley was so social as opposed to him. In Chicago, Ashley’s many theater friends would throw lively parties and he always felt like the biggest bore in the room with no interesting stories to tell. When he did talk, his audience drifted away and Ashley always seemed a bit embarrassed. She tried to instruct him that a good story typically started with a set-back of some kind, so that the characters involved could undergo an arc from darkness into light or vice versa. It was with this surprise marriage proposal that Jack wanted to give his Ashley a fantastic story that they both could tell at any party, perhaps even a story that Ashley could work into one of her routines with her Hollywood performing arts troupe.

“Listen,
it’s not like I haven’t thought about it but…,” she chewed her lower lip, “You’re my neighbor.”

“I can
move if that’s what it’ll take to make this happen.”

“No!” She blurted and
grabbed hold of one of his enormous biceps. “I love the fact that you live right down the hall. You make me feel safe. And you were helpful that day when you gave me a ride on your motorcycle. But we’re neighbors, ok? Let’s just be neighbors.”

Jack realized that this man must be
Dante, the neighbor that Ashley had talked about in their iChats. At first she described the guy as a total meathead who threw loud parties and seemed to have frequent promiscuous sex. The girls she saw traipsing in and out of his pad could be Asian, Spanish, white or black depending on the day but they all did have one thing in common, Ashley would admit, they were always incredibly attractive. Ashley would talk of Dante dismissively, describing him as a player but still Jack had become concerned with the frequency this man was mentioned. It was the first trigger that made Jack realize he needed to propose to Ashley. She needed to know that he was a good man, that he was devoted to her and not some amoral uncaring player.

Jack yearned to tell Ashley that he loved her
forever and that he always wanted her in his life no matter what. If only this obnoxious heathen would leave so that Jack could get on with it.

“Okay
,” Dante said looking down at Ashley who stood only inches away, backed up against her kitchen counter.

“Ok? Just neighbors
?” Ashley confirmed, her voice wavering ever so slightly, imbued with a subtle note of disappointment.

“Yeah
,” the stud smiled, “Neighbors with benefits!”

I
n a flash his hand shot out and grabbed her ass and pulled her body into his. Ashley gasped, her eyes widening in surprise.

Dante! You’re so bad!” She threw up her tiny hands onto his broad chest. Resisting. Weakly. “Dante stop! You’re being silly!”

His dark hand enveloped her white one and drew her arm down to
ward the waistband of his gym shorts.

Dante,” she said sharply, the nervous laughter gone. “No. Stop!”

But he didn’t stop. He continued to force her hand down. She looked up into his eyes in panic, taking short quick breaths
.

Jack suddenly realized this was turning into a rape. The girl of his dreams was about to be forcefully taken before his very eyes. He couldn’t breath. He couldn’t move. Should he jump out in his top hat and tuxedo? Could he fight this man wearing formal attire without looking ridiculous? Could he even fight this man if he was wearing a suit of armor? Jack had to admit, this was a remarkable specimen of a man and he was a bit intimidated by his towering mass of rippling muscle and athletic agility. But Ashley was out th
ere alone, fending off this hulk all by herself. She was no match to his physical prowess. Jack had to do something but what?

So he watched
.

Dante
brought her trembling hand to the bulge in his loose jogging shorts and held it there. Then Dante smiled. A sadistic, gleaming smile as he took his hand off hers. Ashley’s eyes were still wide with panic but her hand remained, grasping the lengthening bulge.

“Please,” she whispered, “I can’t do this.”

“You can’t, but you will.”

In a flash he spun her around by the hips. Her hands
swept across the kitchen counter tossing everything to the floor – rose, water bottles, mail and the letter. Dante yanked her by the hips, pulling her ass into his groin.

Ashley let out a helpless yelp. He flexed, grinding his manhood into her. Ashley moaned, what sounded like a “Nooo
!” while arching her back and pushing off the counter back into him. He yanked her tank top up roughly, exposing her bare tits. Ashley gasped as his big hands grabbed them, squeezing her nipples between his thick fingers. She threw her head back against his chest and looked up at him, the rest of her body curved elegantly against his monumental form.
