Out on the drive, Mother started gesturing, moving her arms in great arcs, as if she were guiding an ocean liner into port.

“Christ,” I said, “hardly even parked, and already she’s at it.”

“She’s just glad to see you, Patience.”

I gave Phoebe my best look ever, the kind I’d always wished I could visit on my mother. Then I shoved my pack of cigarettes into my jacket pocket and jumped out of the Jeep.

“I just got here,” I said as I hit the ground. “Give me half a second to get myself together, will you please?”

Mother looked me up and down, back and forth, the way she always does when she hasn’t seen me in a while—meaning for more than fifteen minutes. Then she said, “I don’t have time to indulge your dallying, Patience. I need your help. I have a dead body in my living room, and it’s already been there for
six hours.”
