“Hi, Spade.” She
smiled. Smelling good.

I hit her with it.
“What’s good?”

“Lookin’ for you.” She
grabbed my hand. “I miss you.”

“Yeah?”

I knew she would come
back,
I thought.

“Mmm hmm.” She leaned
over the table and kissed me hard.

“How did you know I was
here?” I asked after our lips unlocked.

“I been followin’ you,
baby,” she said.

“Quit playin’ wit’ me,
man.”

Her expression was
still the same. “My father was Carlos. Also known as Kutz.”

I looked at her,
baffled.

“You killed him!”

Maria pulled a gun out
of her purse—and pulled the trigger.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
I heard screaming,
felt sharp pains in my chest and stomach. I was blacking out.

Then she stood over me.
“The mother of your seed. Selena. She’s next. See you in hell,” she said.

I lost consciousness.

EPILOGUE

One Year Later

I was in Miami chilling. I recovered
from the almost fatal shots I got a year prior. An ambulance had showed up just
in time to assist me. I heard the police apprehended Maria one week after the shooting
and that she got charged with attempted murder.

I came to the
conclusion that Kutz wanted to kill me because I was fucking his daughter. I
had no idea that bitch was his daughter. She was the reason I had one good lung
and fucked up nerves in my left hand.

The salon me and Lisa
invested in was doing well. We still communicated on the regular. I had been in
Miami for six months. Me and Casey were staying at Sparkle’s beach house.

I was on the patio of
the beach house leaning against the bannister when Casey walked out with her
phone in hand.

“Telephone, baby,” she
said, giving me the phone. “It’s Ace.”

“What’s good, bro?”

“Chillin’, my nigga. I
got some news for you.”

“Yeah?”

“Maria got out. I’m
tryin’ to get a location on the bitch,” he said.

“Is that right? I’m
bookin’ a flight in the morning.”

“Okay, cuzz. I’ll pick
you up when you land.”

I went in the house.
Casey and Sparkle were in the guest room, drinking some tropical shit.

“Maria got out,” I told
them. “I’m headin’ back to the town.”

“We’re comin’ too,”
Casey said.

Sparkle chimed in.
“Yeah, we’ll catch a flight first thing.”

“A’ight,” I said, and
walked to the bedroom me and Casey shared. I heard her walking behind me.

“Spade,” she said.

“What’s up?”

I noticed she had
my
phone in her hand.

“Somebody just sent you
this picture,” she said. “Whose baby is this?”

I grabbed the phone and
looked at the image. It was from Selena. I was happy she was alive. It was a
picture of her child, a little girl. She had my eyebrows and nose. She looked
like I did as a child.

Then a text came.

This
is your daughter. Samantha Dasia Wright. She was born on February 10
th
.
Nine pounds, seven ounces. Call me when you’re ready to meet her. Love, Selena.

I guess I had more than
one reason to go back to Kansas City, Missouri. To kill a beautiful woman, and
meet my beautiful baby girl.
