He smiled at me. “Totally different
situations.” He left the bedroom and I followed behind him. When we
got to the front door, Sean cracked it and looked outside. I stood
behind him and waited.

Are you Sean Preston?” a
male voice said. The power in the voice made me shiver. It didn’t
seem like a friendly neighbor or a known coworker.

Sean was quiet for a moment. “Yes.
Why?”

My name is Hector and
this is Dylan. We are from the New York Police Department. May we
come inside?”

I felt my heart drop. “What?” I
grabbed the door and pulled it open. Two men were standing in the
doorway wearing black suits. Both men had a gun in their belts.
“What’s this about?”

Both of the police officers looked at
me. Hector studied my face for a moment. Scarlet Sisco?”

I swallowed the lump in my throat.
“Yes?”

Hector stepped inside without being
invited. The other man followed right behind him. They looked
around at the apartment, getting a full sweep, and then looked back
at Sean. “Anyone else here?”

I had a bad feeling about
this.

Sean shook his head. “No. And what’s
the purpose of your visit?” Sean held his hand out to me and forced
me to stand behind him.

Hector pulled out a small notebook and
leafed through it. “You’re charged for assault of Carl Rogers of R
and R publishing. We’ll be escorting you back to New York for the
trial.”

Sean stepped forward. “You can’t make
me do anything. I haven’t had a trial, you have no evidence, and
you can’t force me to go against my will. I know what my rights
are, gentleman. Now you can leave.”

Hector nodded. “Actually, we can. You
are under arrest, Mr. Preston.”

What?” I shouted. “You
can’t do that.”

Hector placed his hand on his gun. The
movement made me step back. “We have three witnesses testifying
against Mr. Preston in addition to the indication of assault from
Mr. Roger’s medical records.”

You still can’t arrest me
under those conditions,” Sean said. “I haven’t had a
trial.”

We have the right to
detain you for seventy two hours for questioning. Then you will be
allowed bail until the trial begins, depending on when the court
sets the date,” Hector said. “Until then, you are legally commanded
to stay in the state in which you’re charged. We will be escorting
you to New York now.”

Sean said nothing for a moment. He ran
his fingers through his hair then stared at the floor. I was just
as speechless. I couldn’t believe this was happening. It was so
unexpected and out of the blue. I didn’t know Carl even knew who
Sean was.

Hector moved towards Sean to grab
him.

Wait,” Sean said. “I’ll
come willingly. Just give me a moment with my fiancé.”

Hector nodded. “Right where I can see
you.”

Sean nodded then turned to me. His
eyes were wide with fear. He said nothing for a long time. I could
tell how upset he was by his heightened breathing. His hands were
shaking.

I can’t believe this is
happening,” I whispered. “I’m so sorry.”

Sean ignored me. “Scarlet, listen to
me.”

I felt my heart fall.
“What?”

He sighed. “Carl waited to do this
until now for a reason.”

My hands shook. “What do you
mean?”

He grabbed my face and looked into my
eyes. “He must be watching us, Scarlet. He knows if he can get me
away from you, then he can—take care of you.”

I felt a tear fall. “What—what do you
mean?”

Don’t be scared, Scarlet.
But I think Carl is going to attack you and Janice. He wants
revenge for what you did to him.”

I gasped. “You think?”

How else did he figure
out it was me? He must have people watching you.”

I started to cry. “I’m
scared.”

Scarlet,” he said.
“Listen to me. I need you to do something for me, okay?”

What?”

You do not leave Ryan for
any reason. Where he goes, you go. Cortland too. I want you with
them at all times. You promise me?”

I nodded. “I promise.”

He sighed. “I mean it.”

What about
you?”

He said nothing for a moment. “Don’t
worry about me. My parents will figure out how to get me off. They
have money, Scar. I need you to be safe. I’m going to be contained
and watched at all times. I can’t protect you. You must do as I
say.”

I nodded. “Okay.”

Scar, it’s going to be
okay.”

I started to sob. “No, it’s
not.”

Yes, it will.”

Babe, I love
you.”

I love you
too.”

Hector stepped forward. “It’s time to
go.”

I sobbed. “Please don’t
go.”

Sean kissed my forehead. “It’s okay,
Scar.”

Ryan and I will come to
New York.”

He sighed. “Just be safe.”

Hector grabbed him by the arm and
pulled him away. I ran to him and kissed him hard on the lips. My
tears fell down my face and splashed onto his skin. Sean returned
my embrace with as much intensity. Hector pulled him
away.

Scar, I love
you.”

I love you
too.”

They walked out of the door then moved
down the hallway. I was so overcome with grief that I didn’t even
shut the door. I fell to my knees and hugged my body, trying to
control my breathing. Sean was gone and there was nothing I could
do to bring him back.
