“That must be the wine Dr. Richard gave him, right?”
“Yes; I’m sorry about all this, Kiddo, dumping it on you like this.”
“It’s okay; I’m a nurse, remember. But
, look at this on my neck. It is a needle mark?”
Bellos studied the tiny dot. Then
, he rolled his eyes, stood up and paced.
“They kidnapped you
, to try and get the catalyst bath. They are making more vials. The shelf life of the serum is too short to study.”
“So
, I am in danger…”
“Not until they realiz
e your neck was the wrong extraction point.”
“What do you mean?”
Bellos stopped pacing and looked at her. He snapped his fingers, as if a light bulb turned on.
“Jesus, we have a traitor in our midst. They know you are the bath, and that means they know this-
Ever-Life; us.”
“Ever-Life; I like it.”
“We have to get the serum vials back, before they mix the wrong catalyst; unless, of course, they redid the chemistry already? Angie, I know all this is shocking-the morgue, focus ward. But, I will make this all right. I’m going to bring you into my world, unless you are too exhausted.”
“Dad; I think I’m already in your world.”
“I trust you with everything. Are you hungry?”
“Yes.”
“ Let’s get you refreshed, and something to eat. You can’t afford to go into shock, anytime in the near future.”
Bellos grabbed his Knofer,
“Authorization Bellos GGM-TBN-010…Allow Angie Bellos complete access within any Carrier-Unit17; authorization Bellos 010-TBN2 …And activate defensive posture 001 to protect her.”
Here, Angie; take this. If you get lost and can’t find anyone, just speak into it saying ‘directions’ to where ever you want to go. It will show you the way.”
“I don’t think I’m going to wander off. Anyway, I am tired and hungry.”
“Yes, well as I said; order anything and there is a bath area, around the corner there. I have to go now, for a short time. I will be back very soon. Meanwhile, you can freshen up and enjoy whatever you like. After that, I’m going to send you on a learning effort. You are going on a tour
, and witness exactly how we do what I described. I want you to see and learn Ever-Life. You will experience the duplication process and understand what I just told you.”
“Where are you going?”
“I’m going to save what we have started, and begin beating the bad guys. I will be back by the time you get ready.”
Chapter 20
Unit # 17
Angela Bellos sat in Unit-17 on lower level six
, below Andrews Hospital. She waited for her father and a journey she couldn’t imagine. There was a knock on the door, and a guard walked in.
“Hello, Ms. Angie, are you all right?”
“Yes fine; just waiting.”
“I see. The d
octor asked me to bring you company. I hope you don’t mind.”
“Well, I can’t im
agine many more surprises. Sure; that’s fine.”
The guard turned, mot
ioned; and, in walked a young man, slowly, with his face down. Angie studied him for a few seconds; and then, he looked at her.
“Ms. Angie, this is Brian. Brian, be nice.
Ms. Angie has had an evening to match yours…Ms., the doctor said he will be here shortly.”
“
Thank you.”
Angie stood, squinted, and then said,
“Brian; Brian Sheldon? Is that you?”
Brian looked perplexed, until he took a moment to examine her face.
“My God; Angie Esposito. What the heck! I haven’t seen you since…”
“The party week; going to college…”
“Was that it? Jesus; that was years ago.”
They both held out their hands to each other.
Brian smiled and said, “You are the last person I thought of seeing today.”
“Why are you here?”
“I really don’t know, to tell you the truth. The cops were in the hospital, when I got there. They ended up interrogating me; then, they locked me in a room, in the ER. They said my dad was killed. Maybe they think I’m involved; a suspect or something. For God’s sake, I just wanted to find my boss; and, all of a sudden, I murdered one of my parents.”
Angie paced
, went to the couch a few feet away, and sat down for a minute.
“Brian, I am so sorry.
I wish I had better news. This has been the strangest night of my life. I am the one, who was monitoring your dad on ‘focus ward’.”
“Focus w
ard; I was there; just a while ago. No one mentioned your name. I was there with my boss, Marion Brock. We met Barb Sawyer. Do you know her?”
“Sure;
my dad said that she relieved me.”
“Your Dad?
I thought you lived alone, after your Mom died.”
“I did
, for a while. Dr Bellos did so much for me. I never understood it all, until tonight. He is my father.”
Brian sat
, speechless, beside her, as the door opened again; and in walked Dr. Bellos.
“Hi Sweetie…” They hugged. “You look refreshed.”
“I took a shower, and had a bite to eat.”
“Good…
”
Then, Bellos turned to Brian
and extended his hand.
“Hello young man. I
t’s been a while.”
“Y
es; hi Doc…Please, tell me; what’s going on. They told me Dad is dead.”
“I know Brain;
but that is just not true. Everything is going to be fine.”
Brian looked confused, while
Bellos turned to Angie again.
“Remember, Honey;
I told you before, to be strong? Now is the time.”
Bellos walked to the door, opened it and Dr. Jack Sheldon step
ped into the room. Angie gasped. Jack looked immediately at Brian.
“
Son; thank God.”
Brian jumped from his chair into Jack’s arms. Bellos closed the door and locked eyes with Angie.
He pursed his lips, gesturing with a finger, for her to be silent. They both watched Jack and Brian.
“Dad, what’s happening? They told me you were shot. Where is Mom?”
“The truth is, I don’t know.” Jack glanced at Bellos. “But; we will work this out. I promise. That’s why I’m here.”
They embraced
; and, after the shock wore off, Jack fixed on Angie.
“Matt;
Angie is your daughter?” He stepped over to her, and took her hand. “…Wonderful; apparently, your father has several secrets.”
“Yes, I’m learning.
Apparently, he knows how to keep one.”
“Matt, where exactly are we?
Did the young ones take a plane ride too?”
“No
, sorry; and once again, we have to move on here, Buddy. Time is of the essence. Look; you three have legitimate questions. I’ll start by telling you, Brian; your boss, Marion Brock, has taken something very precious from your Dad. Without it; he may not live. We have to get it back. That means, we need to work together. You understand?”
“Not really; my boss, Marion? I was with him on focus ward. We were just trying to see Dad.”
“Brian, think a minute for me,” said Bellos. “Do you know anything about a big deal; some negotiation Brock has been involved with?”
“Why, yes;
I think so. He and the whole team are about to close a big deal, to make peace for the first time, between religions or something.”
Jack and Bellos looked at each other.
“Brian; Son, do you have any idea where the deal is taking place?”
Brian stepped away, thought and said, “I think it’s with some Greek Orthodox priest
, in Jerusalem, or Turkey, or somewhere like that. I remember Rash InVoy saying they are supposed to meet at some church.”
Bellos took a breath; and t
hen he walked over, opened the door and said, “Dr. LuAnne, please come in…This is my Daughter, Angie; and this is Dr. Jack Sheldon and his Son, Brian.”
“Hello everyone…” She focu
sed on Angie. “I understand you are going to tour with me for a while.”
“Yes, I think so.”
They both looked at Bellos, and he nodded.
“Well then, I guess we a
re off,” LuAnne said, with a smile.
“Fine, that’s a good idea.” Bellos embraced Angie and whispered, “Good luck; everything will be fine. I
should be back to see you early this afternoon. You are in good hands, with Dr. LuAnne?”
“I’ll be okay.”
She pulled his head down and kissed his cheek, and then looked at Brian. “See you, Brian.”
They walked out
; and Dr. LuAnne shut the door behind them. Bellos turned to face Brian and Jack.
“Okay,
you two; take a seat, please. Listen carefully; we are all going on a trip, in a very special vehicle. It’s called a Carrier. When you get in, just relax. I should tell you both; this Carrier is very fast; but, neither of you should feel anything uncomfortable. Our objective is to retrieve several small vials.”
“Vials?” Brian said. “
Do you know where they are?”
“We think so. Our security team has tracked and located the currier
, carrying them. He is negotiating with us as we speak. We plan to intercept him, in Jerusalem.”
“Uh; Jerusalem, as in Israel?
” Jack asked.
“Yes…
If all goes well, we make a trade. They end up with fake serum. We get the real thing; and then, you, Jack, get C.P.T. We should return here to Andrews, sometime after noon, U.S.A. Mountain Time.”
“
Shortly after noon? This Carrier vehicle must be very fast...And who are the, ‘they’, Matt? And what are we trading?”
“I will get to that. Like I said;
you two shouldn’t feel anything, in the vehicle. You both should be aware of the jet lag factor, though, because, while it is now 8:14 a.m. here; in real time, we will arrive in Jerusalem, Israel in a little over one hour, from departure. That part of the world is some nine hours, ahead of our mountain time.”
All three looked at one another
; and then, Jack spoke, “Jesus, Matt, you said we were going where no one has gone; but, should we be taking the kid?”
“No, we shouldn’t. He will stay in the Carr
ier, at a villa, outside Jerusalem. You and I will go the final distance. I need you to be okay and focused, Jack; can you do this?”
Brian stood up and blurted at Bellos, “I know I won’t! I’m better trained and stronger
, than either one of you two. God knows what shape Dad is in, right now. You are only doctors; for Christ’s sake. I am not leaving my Dad again.”
“Brock taught you something, eh,” said Bellos.
“I’m good, Matt,” Jack replied. “I’m fine, really; one thing though…”
“What?”
“…Can I have another drink of that elixir?”
“Yes
; sure.”
Bellos walked across the room, over to the curved wall, opened a small door and took a wine glass out.
“Here…”
“What is that?” Brian asked.
Jack smiled and toasted his son. “Food for the Gods, Son; food for the gods…”
Jack
drank the whole thing, in one gulp. Bellos held the door open and gestured to both.
“Okay you two, let’s go.”
Chapter 21
Holmes
Detective Jake Burns stood over Jack Sheldon’s body, inside the Andrews hospital morgue.
“Sergeant, Sergeant Wells…”
“Yes, Sir?”
“Where is
Dave Marshall, Security Chief?”
“I am right behind you, officer.”
Burns turned around to look up at a six-foot two-inch handsome 45-year-old man, in a tan shirt and dark brown pants. There was nothing on his person, except a small Knofer, holstered at his waist.
“That’s ‘Detective’, Mr. Marshall. Exactly
, where have you been?”
“T
ending to duty, on the seventh floor. What can I do for you?”
“And, what i
s on floor seven?”
“Psychotic and bi-polar patients…”
Burns raised his eyebrows and shook his head.
“Great, more suspects…I’ll tell you what, Mr. Marshal
l, first; you can give me an idea of why this man was shot. What were these pros after? They were pros. But this was no ‘hit’…The line of shots indicate more than one automatic weapon; and look at these bloody footprints. They have the same shoe tread. Tell me Mr. Marshall, where was your security squad, while all this was happening?”
“Okay; so, they were pros. How did they get in? They left
, breaking the hall windows. Where would they go? We searched the campus and found nothing. But, I’m sure your men will do better. It is only a six hundred acre campus…
