“Okay, Bella,
I want you to hide at the side of the garage. I’ll come and get you
when I’m done.”

Remembering
the map, Farrah walked to the back of the house. She unlatched the
hook to the metal gate that led into the backyard. Inadvertently,
she stepped on a skateboard that caused her to fall backwards.

“Awwh!” Farrah
screamed as she rubbed her head lying flat on her back. She quickly
stuffed her fist into her mouth to silence another scream.

Farrah got up
gingerly and continued to walk into the backyard. This time she
paid more attention to where she stepped. Suddenly she jumped,
having thought she spotted a Polar Bear in the backyard, but after
her eyes adjusted to the darkness, she realized that it was just a
white shed.

A Polar Bear in France – Keep it together Farrah.”
She whispered to herself
.

Lying in the
grass with her stomach to the ground, Farrah looked up at the
bedroom window of her first subject. He was a boy named Bruce, and
he looked to be awake by the light that was coming through the
sheers of his window. Farrah thought it best to wait until the
light went out before she proceeded. This didn’t take long as it
was getting very late and it was a school night on earth.

Farrah
remembered the rule of always appearing in the human subject’s
closet; the only problem was that she had absolutely no idea how to
get into the house. Without hesitation this time, Farrah took out
the scroll and unrolled it out onto the grass. She found the
section of the map marked TELEPORT, and after a few seconds was
able to make out the Bellasimitrian language.

“To teleport
into a home, a Tooth Fairy must wait until the night is at its
darkest. Once dark, he or she must work quickly. Place your pointer
finger into the molar dust and then mark an X on the side of the
house. If a Tooth Fairy must teleport more than one level, they
should mark a larger X. If the subject’s room is on the same floor,
a small x is all that is needed. Lastly, the Tooth Fairy is to
sprinkle Molar Dust on his or her shoes.”

Farrah quickly
dipped her finger into the Molar dust that she had taken out of her
pocket. The only problem was that she was unclear about how the
night sky could get any darker. As she stared up at the almost full
moon above, it happened. A cloud drifted directly in front of the
moon, momentarily blocking the light. Not wanting to waste any
time, Farrah ran up to the house.

She took a
moment to think of where she wanted to teleport. Seeing that the
boy’s room was only one floor above, she marked the red brick wall
with a medium size X. She turned her body slightly to look at the
spot where she had spotted the moon. Slowly it came into view as
the cloud drifted by. Farrah quickly sprinkled some dust on her
shoes while the night sky was still at its darkest.

In the blink
of an eye, Farrah’s entire body was sucked into the wall like a
vacuum sucking up the hairball of a sick cat. A blur of colours
screamed before Farrah’s eyes, then whoomp, she had been sucked
into the chimney of the house and spit back out onto the grass in
the back yard.

It took Farrah
a moment to regain her sanity. She had whacked her head on the
ground once again, much harder this time. Having heard the thud in
the backyard, Bella rushed over to see what was going on.

“No – get out
of here, Bella, I’m okay – you’re going to blow our cover!”

Bella quickly
returned to her spot at the side of the garage as Farrah slowly got
back up to her feet. She scanned the windows of the house, but
nothing had changed. She was lucky that nobody had heard her fall.
Frustrated, Farrah began to talk to herself again.

What on
Earth could have gone wrong? I waited until the sky got dark, I
marked the house with an x, what gives?”

On a hunch,
Farrah took the scroll out once again. She flipped it over to
reveal the Golden Rules. Quickly she decoded rule number 2.

Golden Rule
number two, all Tooth Fairies must be aware that they are up to 10x
more powerful when on Earth.

“How could I
have forgotten?” Farrah yelled at the map as she quickly folded it
back up and tucked it into her pocket.

“I must have
used too much Molar dust.”

Fearing that it
was getting too late, and still another dozen or so missions
scheduled for the night, Farrah quickly repeated the teleportation
steps. She waited for the next cloud to float in front of the moon.
This time she took a tiny dab with her pointer finger and marked a
much more faded x on the wall of the house. She followed this up by
sprinkling a much smaller amount of dust on her shoes. Instantly,
the same blur of colours streamed past her face until there was
total blackness.

When Farrah
opened her eyes, it was pitch black. At first, she feared that she
had once again been thrust back into the yard. Feeling around, she
was relieved to discover that dozens of hanging clothes surrounded
her. The teleportation had worked, as she was in the dark closet of
Bruce’s room. Farrah took a deep breath to recompose herself and
pushed the closet door open.

Bruce was
sleeping snuggly in his bed. He had what looked to be a tiny
grizzly bear clutched to his chest. Startled at first, Farrah let
out a tiny yelp. Luckily, as she moved in closer she could see that
it was only a stuffed animal.

Farrah took a
moment to look over the human’s room. It was much different from
Farrah’s. There was a large mirror on the wall to Farrah’s left, a
strange looking black box with a glass mirror sat on a wooden desk
directly in front of Bruce’s bed. Also a two-wheeled contraption
leaned up against the wall next to his bed. Getting back to the
mission, Farrah knew what she had to do.

She had read
stories in the books about the actual recovery of a human’s tooth.
There was one book in particular that was devoted entirely to the
etiquette that a Tooth Fairy must follow when on a mission. One
rule explained that is was the duty of a Tooth Fairy to speak of
Fairyland every time a human child is wakened from their sleep. Of
course, this had become a futile attempt with a fairy unable to
perform magic.

If the child
remained sleeping, all the Tooth Fairy was required to do was to
take the tooth from underneath the child’s pillow. A reward of
money would then be placed under the pillow as compensation for the
gift.

Farrah gasped
as she remembered this last part. She had forgotten to bring money
as a reward for the teeth. Before she had a chance to figure out
what to do, Bruce had woken up. He sat up in his bed and flicked on
the lamp on a night table. Half of the room was illuminated.

“Whose there?”
shouted Bruce, as he held up his teddy bear to act as a protective
shield.

Where Farrah
stood, she was still in darkness. She took a step forward, but the
sleepy child was uninterested in what was going on.

“Mom, why did
you have to wake me up?” asked a disgruntled Bruce as he pulled the
covers over his head, wanting to return to his sleep.

“I’m not your
mother, Bruce, I’m Farrah Fancycracker,” replied Farrah.

She remembered
that it was common for a human child to think that it was their
mother or father that had entered their room. Because of the
cynical nature of humans, they were more likely to believe that an
alien robot from another planet was entering their room than a
mystical fairy.

“Oh, yeah,
right, mom, you’re Farrah Fancycracker, the Tooth Fairy. Nice try -
you might as well take off that funny looking costume because I’m
not buying it,” Bruce declared, as he pulled the covers from over
his head and sat up on the bed.

“I’m telling
you the truth, Bruce. I am Farrah Fancycracker, and I come from
Fairyland.” She spoke again, this time trying to sound as mystical
as possible, which sounded spookier than anything else.

“Okay, okay,
if you really are the Tooth Fairy, then why are you so big? Fairies
are supposed to be tiny creatures. And why aren’t you floating
around my room with your big beautiful wings,” responded Bruce,
sounding even more agitated as he swung his legs over the side of
his bed.

“Oh, umh, I’m
a special Tooth Fairy that doesn’t use her wings to fly. Instead, I
have my friend Bella to help me with transportation.”

“Okay, Mom,
I’ll go along with your little fantasy. How much money did I get
for my tooth?” asked a now wide-eyed Bruce as he searched around
under his pillow.

“Hey, you left
me nothing,” shouted Bruce, feeling distraught and hurt as he
crossed his arms and fell back onto his bed.

“Oh, I was
just about to get to that.”

Farrah
searched her pockets, but besides Molar dust, the Octo dust, the
map and some lint, there was nothing of any value that could be
given to the boy. Farrah grabbed for her dust purse, which had
fallen to the ground. Much to her surprise, mounds of money poured
out when she opened it. Euros, Francs, toonies, dollars, pounds,
every kind of money imaginable was in her purse. Farrah tried to
keep her cool as she dug her hand into the pile of money.

Oh, that Picolotto,
Farrah thought to herself.

“How much do
you want?” asked Farrah.

“20 Euros
should do it,” responded Bruce, as he tried to suppress a
giggle.

Without
hesitation, Farrah dug her hands into her purse and handed Bruce
the money.

“Wow thanks,”
replied Bruce, as he held the bill up to his nose and smelled it,
his own way of checking out if it was authentic.

Having given
up any hope of convincing Bruce about Fairyland, Farrah said
goodbye and headed back toward the closet.

“Goodbye, Mom.
Oh, sorry, Farrah,” chuckled Bruce, just as Farrah stepped into the
closet.

Farrah backed
into the closet and closed the door. Almost instantly, the
colourful blur of the teleport brought her back to the grass in the
yard. She nearly hit a ceramic gnome that stood human-like in the
grass.

Chapter 37: A Hard Day’s Night

Farrah hopped
onto Bella’s back. She had rounded the corner just as Farrah hit
the blades of grass in the backyard. Although Farrah didn’t know
where her next mission would take her, she thought it best to
return back to the surface of Fairyland. That was apparently the
right decision. Bruce’s father had exited out the back door; just
moments after Farrah had left. Forgetting to put out the trash, he
walked it over to the curb.

Bella flew
straight up into the air. They busted through the clouds like a
fist smashing through tissue paper. Her heart raced as she sat atop
Bella, still looking down at the ground. Although she was extremely
tired, she knew that her night had only just begun. Wanting to get
started on the next mission, she took out the Veddo from her purse.
Much to her surprise, Picolotto’s face was staring back at her. He
had a large smile on his face, much as a parent does when watching
their son or daughter participate in a human sport.

“Excellent
job, Farrah, you were able to complete your first mission. How does
it feel?” Asked Picolotto with much pride, although secretly he
knew that without his assistance, she never would have been able to
complete the mission.

“Oh, umh…I
feel pretty good. A few bumps, but nothing I can’t handle. Oh –
Thank you for putting the money in my purse.”

“What money,
my dear?”

“The money
in…”

“Take a look
at the third and final golden rule.” Interrupted Picolotto.

Farrah quickly
dismounted Bella and unfurled the scroll on the ground. She looked
over the third section on the back of the scroll, taking a few
moments to decipher it.

“The third
rule is that a Tooth Fairy must never carry with them anything of
monetary value. If he or she does, he or she runs the risk of an
encounter with Pirate Fairies that sail their boats high above the
clouds of Earth. They lurk in the shadows of the clouds waiting for
the right moment to pounce on as unsuspecting Tooth Fairy.”

“Pirate
Fairies – I have never heard of a Pirate Fairy,” reacted Farrah
with surprise.

“That’s
because Tooth Fairies have been careful to follow this third golden
rule. It has been years since the last Fairy Pirate has been seen.
Lucky for us - they are absolutely gruesome creatures. Not only do
they take your money, but they’ll also lop of your hands, as a
punishment.”

“Gross,” said
Farrah, picturing the hideous sight of a handless fairy.

“Continue
reading, my dear.”

“Oh, sorry –
Um, a Tooth Fairy must never negotiate the reward with a human
child. They are never to be trusted, often requesting more than
five times a normal amount for their teeth.”

“Twenty
Euros?” asked Picolotto disapprovingly.

“I had no
idea,” responded Farrah, as her face turned a shade of pink in
embarrassment.

“Okay, enough
of that. You have many more missions to complete tonight. Just
remember the second rule.”

“I know, I
know, my powers are more powerful when on Earth.”

Hearing Farrah
say those words, Picolotto was off. It didn’t take long for the
location of Farrah’s next mission to be revealed in the Veddo. It
was London, England to retrieve two teeth from a girl named Grace.
Apparently, she and her brother were playing soccer when he missed
the ball entirely and struck her square in the face. Luckily, Grace
was okay, but she lost her two front teeth in the process.

That mission
was followed by a trip to Naples, Italy where Farrah met Domenico,
then a journey to Juneau, Alaska to meet a young girl named Denali,
and a trip to Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic where a
9-year old boy named Enrique lives. In all, Farrah was able to
complete 11 more missions with much more ease than her first go
around at Bruce’s house. A very respectable number for a
first-timer.
