Eesti Trail Hiking Socks

Nancy Bush

These men’s hiking socks were modeled after a pair of socks Nancy Bush purchased in a village market in Kuressaare, on the island of Saaremaa in Estonia. She chose to substitute the snowflake or cross pattern for the heavy XO design of the original socks. Easy to knit, these socks make a perfect gift—or a project for any man who has discovered the pleasures of making handknit socks for himself.

Lace-Cuff Anklets

Ann Budd

Linen might sound like an unusual choice for a sock, but this merino/ linen blend brings out the best in both fibers. The softness, stretch, and memory of the fine wool create a comfortable sock that holds its shape. With a simple openwork ribbed cuff, these anklets are perfect summer socks. Begin the cuff on the largest-size needle, then switch to the medium size at the halfway point to allow the lace trim to fold over, then work the heel, foot, and toe with the smallest size. Finish off the lace cuff with a crocheted picot edge.

Cuff

Holding two size 4 (3.5 mm) needles tog, loosly CO 44 (56) sts. Carefully remove second needle from CO, arrange sts as evenly as possible on 3 dpn, place marker (pm), and join for working in the rnd, being careful not to twist sts. Knit 1 rnd. Work 2 × 2 openwork rib (see
Stitch Guide
) for a total of 10 (12) rnds. Change to size 3 (3.25 mm) needles and cont as established for 10 (12) more rnds—piece measures about 2½ (3)" (6.5 [7.5] cm) from CO. Change to size 2 (3 mm) needles and purl 1 rnd for cuff fold line. Bring yarn to front between needles, slip first st of next rnd as if to purl, wrap this st by bringing yarn to back between needles and return slipped st to left needle. Turn cuff inside out so that WS of lace pattern is outward. RS of remainder of sock will correspond to WS of lace patt so that the RS of lace will show on the outside of the sock when the cuff is folded down. Rnd begins at back of leg.
Next rnd:
*K1, p1; rep from * to end. Rep the last rnd until piece measures 2½ (3)" (6.5 [7.5] cm) from purled fold line. The ribbing will help hold the sock up and will be concealed by the lace section when the cuff is folded down.
