Merino Lace Socks

Anne Woodbury

After reading stitch dictionaries and thinking about Aran sweaters, Anne Woodbury was inspired to combine four complementary eyelet and lace patterns the way that Aran knitting combines cable patterns. Anne worked these socks on two circular needles rather than a set of double-pointed needles, an increasingly popular technique explained below.

N
OTE

These socks are worked on two circular needles instead of four or five double-pointed needles, which is more usual.

Working with Two Circular Needles

Cast the required number of sts onto one 16" or 24" (40 or 60 cm) circular (cir) needle. Slide sts to opposite end of needle and slip half of the sts onto another cir needle—Needle 1. Slide sts that rem on Needle 2 to the flexible cable portion of that needle. With sts still on rigid end of Needle 1, hold Needle 1 in front of Needle 2 in preparation for joining into a round. Join the ends, being careful not to twist sts.
*Take the opposite tip of Needle 1, bring it around to the right, and knit the sts off the right tip of Needle 1. (Needle 1 will form a circle as sts from the left tip are worked onto the right tip.) When all sts from Needle 1 have been worked, slide them to the flexible cable portion of the needle. Turn the knitting around and pick up Needle 2. Slide the sts from the flexible cable to the right tip of Needle 2. Pick up the left tip of the needle, bring it around and knit the sts on Needle 2. (Needle 2 will form a circle as the sts are worked from one tip to the other.) Slide the sts to the flexible cable portion of Needle 2 and turn the work, returning to Needle 1. Rep from *.

Leg

Using one cir needle, loosely CO 66 sts. Place 33 sts of these sts onto a second cir needle—33 sts each on Needle 1 and Needle 2. Rnd begins at side of leg (bet the two needles). Join for working in the rnd with two cir needles (see
box at left
), being careful not to twist sts. Work Rnds 1–4 of Rib chart until piece measures 2" (5 cm) from beg. Work Rnds 1–12 of Leg chart 5 times, then work Rnds 1–6 again—piece should measure about 7½ (19 cm) from beg.

Heel
Heel Flap

Slip the first 3 sts from Needle 1 onto Needle 2—30 sts on Needle 1 to be worked for heel; 36 sts on Needle 2 will be worked later for instep. Working 30 heel sts back and forth in rows and slipping the first st of each row pwise with yarn in front (wyf), work Rows 1–12 of Heel chart 2 times, then work Rows 1–6 once more—18 chain sts along each selvedge edge; heel flap measures about 2½" (6.5 cm). Knit 1 (RS) row.

Turn Heel

Work short-rows to shape heel as foll:

Row 1:
(WS) P17, p2tog, p1, turn work.

Row 2:
(RS) K6, ssk, k1, turn.

Row 3:
Purl to 1 st before gap formed on previous row, p2tog (1 st each side of gap), p1, turn.

Row 4:
Knit to 1 st before gap formed on previous row, ssk (1 st each side of gap), k1, turn.

Rep Rows 3 and 4 until all sts have been worked, ending with Row 4—18 heel sts rem.

Shape Gussets

Pick up sts along selvedge edges of heel flap and rejoin for working in the rnd as foll:

Rnd 1:
With Needle 1, pick up and knit 17 sts along left edge of heel flap; with Needle 2, work 36 instep sts in patt as established (beg with Rnd 1 of Foot chart); with Needle 1, pick up and knit 17 sts along right edge of heel flap, k18 heel sts, cont to end of Needle 1, working left gusset sts again—88 sts total; 52 sts on Needle 1, 36 sts on Needle 2. Work to end of Needle 2. Rnd begins at beg of Needle 1.

Rnd 2:
On Needle 1, k1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1; on Needle 2, work 36 sts as established—2 sts dec’d.

Rnd 3:
Work even in patt.

Rep Rnds 2 and 3 until 30 sts rem on Needle 1—66 sts total.

Foot

Cont as established, working Needle 2 (instep sts) according to Foot chart and Needle 1 (sole sts) in St st until foot measures about 7½ (19 cm) from back of heel, or 2" (5 cm) less than desired total foot length, ending with an even-numbered rnd.

Toe

Change to St st. Knit 1 rnd. Rearrange sts so that there are 33 sts on each needle as foll: Place 2 sts from beg of Needle 2 and 1 st from end of Needle 2 onto Needle 1.

Rnd 1:
Knit, dec 1 st at end of each needle as foll: knit to last 3 sts of needle, k2tog, k1; rep from *—32 sts rem each needle.

Rnd 2:
On Needle 1, k1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1; on Needle 2, k1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1—4 sts dec’d.

Rnd 3:
Knit.

Rep Rnds 2 and 3 until 36 sts rem (18 sts on each needle). Rep Rnd 2
every
rnd until 8 sts rem (4 sts on each needle).

Finishing

Cut yarn, leaving a 10" (25.5 cm) tail. Thread tail on tapestry needle and use the Kitchener st (see Glossary,
page 123
) to graft sts tog. Weave in loose ends. Block lightly.
