“That’s true, man,” Smoke says as he takes a drink of his beer. “I’m not sure how those two made something as sweet and feisty as Addy.”

“Not to mention that sleazy fucking brother-in-law of hers,” I add, right before I down a shot and pour myself another. “I’ve got a story to tell you about him, when Boz gets here.”

Boz appears on my other side and takes a seat. “I’m here now, so start telling.”

Instead of doing as my President says, I drink my shot down and grab for the bottle again. Boz catches my hand and says, “You may want to tell your story now, before you get too shitfaced for me to understand what you’re trying to say.”

Smoke pours himself and Boz a shot, moving the bottle away from me. “He’s pissed because Red wouldn’t look at him, she has shitty parents, and a handsy brother-in-law.”

I look over at him and say, “I never said anything about him being handsy.”

Thought it, but I didn’t say it. Makes me wonder if Smoke has the same suspicions about that fucker. “I said he was sleazy.”

“You said sleazy. I said handsy. To me, that’s pretty much the same thing, especially when it comes to someone like him. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that he’s both,” Smoke replies before pouring then downing his drink and putting the top on the bottle. “It doesn’t take a college education to see he wants to get his hands on Red.”

“Sure doesn’t,” Boz says, right before downing his shot and pushing his glass away. “It’s also clear that Addy doesn’t want a fucking thing to do with him.”

I sit there thinking for a second, trying to think of how to say what I need to. Finally, I decide to just give it to them straight. “I went to see Addy last week. Caught her pulling into a hotel parking lot down by the college. Waited around, and we had a little talk when she came out.”

Both of my brothers listen while I talk, not asking a single question. The words are like razor blades making their way up my throat. When I finish telling them about her driving away, I grab my beer and take a drink, hoping to wash away the bitter taste in my throat.

“Hate that for you, Brew,” Boz says, slapping me on my back. “I know it’s hard to lay yourself out there and get shit on.”

My eyes jerk to him and I shake my head. “Is that all you got out of that?”

“Nope,” Boz replies with a shake of his head. “Before I said anything else, I wanted to make sure that wasn’t all you got out of it. Especially considering a club whore had your dick in her mouth the next damn day.”

Running my hand through my hair, I look over his shoulder. “Let’s just call that a momentary lack of judgement, one that your woman cleared up real quick.”

“What’s Trix got to do with this, other than sending you after Addy in the first place?” he asks as he leans back in the booth.

“Trix told me that something happened to Red. She doesn’t know for sure what all had happened, but she knows it was bad. Addy won’t talk about it.” I tell them both all about my conversation with Trix, not leaving a damn thing out.

“Holy fuck,” Boz says as Smoke pulls the bottle of Jack back over and takes the top off.

After he pours us all another shot, he asks, “This shit’s been going on for a year?”

“Yeah, about that.” I take a break in my story long enough for another drink before I continue. “The shit Trix said, it reminded me so much of my sister. Hell, brothers, it was like I was living through that shit with Trina all over again.”

“What’s this got to do with her brother-in-law?” Smoke asks, again proving to me that he got the same vibes from the fucker I did.

“After Addy left the hotel that night,” I start, looking at both of them to make sure they understand what night I’m talking about, “a few minutes later, that motherfucker walks out of the door. The minute I laid eyes on him, I knew something was off. He had the nerve to talk to me, ask me if I was part of Hoss’ crew. Then, he asked if I knew Trix.”

Boz slams down his glass and growls out, “What the fuck was he doing asking questions about my old lady?”

“I don’t know,” I answer with a shrug. “Looking back, I think he was fishing, trying to find out if I had any connection to Addy.”

“You should have taken his ass out on the spot,” Boz says, reminding me that I failed my woman once again.

“If I would’ve put two and two together at the time, I would’ve killed the son of a bitch,” I say honestly. “If I had, Red wouldn’t be scared of her own shadow any longer.”

“Damn,” Smoke mutters, before pouring what is left in the bottle. “If you know this is the man doing the shit to her, why the fuck are we sitting here instead of taking care of that motherfucker?”

I am about to answer him when Trix walks to the booth and says, “I hope like hell y’all haven’t drank too much, because we need to go.”

Boz pulls her into his lap and asks, “Go where? If it’s to be around that fucked up family of Red’s, I’d rather sit here and drink, at least until the party is over. After that, we can go see our friend.”

“We’re not going to the party,” she tells him, while pushing herself off his lap and standing up. “We’re going upstairs and hiding in our room.”

“That sounds like a good idea to me,” Boz says, shooting her a wink.

“Brother, I think we need to make some decisions first, don’t you?” I remind him of the conversation we were just having. “I could take out the motherfucker on my own, but I’d like to figure out the when and where with my President and VP.”

He loses his smile and nods his head. Before he can respond, Trix starts talking again. “Come on, boys. I need to tell you what I heard, and we need to get in the room before anyone sees us.”

I stand up from my seat. “Tell us what? What the hell did you hear?”

She shakes her head and puts a finger over her lips. Then, she leads us to the elevator. Once we step inside, she pushes the button for the second floor and waits for the door to shut. As soon as it does, she turns to look at her man.

“When I was coming out of our room, I saw Addy’s parents walking down the hall. I didn’t want to talk to them, so I pushed the door almost closed. It was opened just enough to hear them talking.” She takes in a deep breath before going on. “Her father was saying that he didn’t think it was right what they were doing to Addy.”

“What wasn’t right?” I ask, as the elevator dings and the door opens.

She doesn’t say another word until she sees the hallway is clear. “I’m not sure, but he also said he doesn’t like Blake, and as Addy’s father, he should be protecting her not putting her in danger. He mentioned something about this going on long enough, and it’s time for it to stop.”

“Fuck! I knew it was him, knew it. I should’ve taken care of his ass before,” I growl, running a hand through my hair.

“I still don’t get why we’re going to hide in the room,” Smoke says, looking at Trix. “I gotta tell you, I’m not big on hiding any time.”

“I think we should stay hidden, then later, go down and watch to see what’s going on,” she says, with a shrug.

“Thank God, you’re here,” Addy’s sister shouts, drawing all of our attention to her coming toward us.

“What the fuck?” Boz mumbles as we wait for her to reach us.

She’s screaming as she moves as fast as she can. “I need help. No, Addy does. She needs help.”

“What are you talking about, Alex?” Trix asks, grabbing her hand when she gets close. “Where’s Addy at?”

“I think she’s still at the party, but she’s gonna be up here soon.” She points to a room, only a few doors down from Boz and Trix’s.

Trix leads us to their room, ushering Alex inside. “You need to tell me what you’re talking about, sweetie. Right now, you’re not making a whole lot of sense.”

“Blake said I was too tired after Addy’s graduation to attend the party. He said I had to stay in the room,” Alex explains, chewing on her bottom lip. “I couldn’t do it, though. I just had to see Addy all dressed up, so I snuck downstairs to get a peek at her.”

Her eyes roam the room, taking in me and my brothers, before she looks back at Trix. “When I stayed as long as I dared, I realized I forgot the key to the room. I couldn’t go to Blake, so I went to the front desk instead. That’s when I found out that he has two rooms. Ours and room number 231. It didn’t take me long to figure out what he had planned.”

“Fuck!” I shout, sending a fist into the wall. “I’m gonna kill him.”

I can see the fear in her eyes as she looks at me. “Please, help my sister. He tried to rape her before, but I stopped him. I don’t know if I could stop him this time.”

Looking into her broken eyes, I realize she’s a victim, too. I also realize that she doesn’t know her sister has been being raped repeatedly for over a year. Seeing the fragile state she is in, I hope she never finds out.

Trix draws my attention away from Alex by saying, “I think she should go back to her room. She’s in no condition to be here.”

“I can tell by the look on her face that she wouldn’t listen,” Smoke says, finally entering the conversation. “She’s probably safer here anyway.”

I’m about to agree, when I hear a scream.

CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Addy

STANDING IN
the corner of the ball room my mother rented for the occasion, I cannot believe how over the top this place is. There are pink peonies all over the place, Mom’s favorite flowers, making the entire room smell like a flower shop. Everywhere I look, there are pictures of my family, all with my mother up front and center.

It doesn’t take long for me to realize not one of my friends are here. This party isn’t for me, no way. It’s just another excuse for my parents to socialize with the elite of Knoxville. Since I graduated, it may be their last chance, so Mother wants to make sure she does it right.

“Why are you hiding away in the corner all by yourself, Little Bit?” my brother-in-law asks, coming to stand by my side.

As much as I want to ignore Blake, to tell him to go fuck himself, I’m afraid to. Alex and I are so close to being free; I don’t want to do anything that could ruin it. Pissing him off at this point would not be a good idea.

“I don’t know any of these people,” I tell him honestly.

He lifts a brow and looks around the room for a few seconds. “I thought your friend Patricia and her friends were planning on coming to the party. It’s rude of her to not show up, when she clearly said she would be here.”

I’m sure she will be here soon, but I don’t tell him that. “She’s probably been held up.”

“Your sister feels terrible that she couldn’t come down,” he says with a slight shrug of his shoulders. “When I saw how hard the graduation ceremony was on her, I had to insist that she stayed in the room tonight.”

Someone else, someone that didn’t know Blake for the monster he is, would think that he actually loved his wife. I, on the other hand, realize there is a reason he made her stay in the room. Whatever that reason is, I’m sure it’s not good.

“Her and the baby come first,” I reply, telling him something he should already know.

“Meet me in room 231 in five minutes.” Blake leans down to whisper in my ear, running a hand over my ass.

My eyes jerk to him as I step away. “What?”

I ask the question, even though I know I heard him correctly. Still, he couldn’t mean what I think. After the night before his and Alex’s wedding, he has never tried anything with my parents around again. In fact, when they are near, he is always the picture perfect husband and brother-in-law.

“I told you we would be meeting this weekend,” he explains with a smile. “You didn’t think I’d forget, did you?”

My mind runs wild, trying to come up with an excuse he’ll accept. “I can’t. Mom will have a fit if I just disappear.”

He shakes his head, his smile growing impossibly wider. “I’ve already talked to both of your parents. I explained that I had a special gift that I wanted to give you in private. I also told them we wouldn’t be back until much later, if at all. They agreed to give your excuses, if anyone should happen to ask for you.”

Suddenly, it all clicks in my head, and I jerk my eyes to my mother and father. They are both staring at us. My mother has her normal ice queen face on, but my father looks like he’s in pain. They know; both of them know what Blake has planned, and neither of them are even going to try to stop him. In fact, they’ve cleared the path for him.

My anger overrules my self-preservation as I say, “Why should we wait five minutes? Let’s get this shit over with.”

Not willing to wait for him to respond, I stomp out of the ballroom and head straight to the elevator. Blake follows closely behind me as I step inside. His eyes are full of laughter as he pushes the button for floor number two and leans against the wall. We both are quiet as the elevator climbs, and we stay that way as we walk toward the room.

Blake pulls out the key card, opens the door, and ushers me inside. “Ladies first. Even when the woman in question isn’t much of a lady.”

I stomp inside and turn to him, anger still controlling my tongue. “Do you want me to strip, or do you prefer tearing off my clothes like you did last time?”

“Addy, I would watch that mouth of yours. If not, you might find yourself with more than just a few bruises this time,” he barks out, obviously losing his temper.

I should be scared, should be shaking in my heels, but I’m not. I’m too damn angry to be frightened. Rushing forward, I slap him right across the face. Then, I rake my nails down his cheeks and follow it closely by a knee to his nuts.

“You’ve already done everything you can do to me. You’ve beat me, raped me, stolen my self-respect,” I shout, going in for another kick.

He side-steps just in time to avoid it, grabbing my hands as he does so. His free hand reaches out and slaps me hard enough to make my ears ring. He reaches down and grabs the front of my dress. A second later, he pulls down, ripping it in two. Then, he’s walking me backward toward the bed.

“You shouldn’t have done that, Adyson. You should have kept pretending to be an obedient woman, then this would have gone easier for you.”

A second later he is on me, holding me down with one hand and pulling my panties off with the other. Unlike every other time, I fight—bucking, scratching, biting, anything I can do to keep him from getting what he wants. I let out a bloodcurdling scream, and he runs his hand between my legs. Just as he reaches for his zipper, another scream fills the air. It takes me a second to realize it isn’t mine.
