“The doors there. Go and wait for your cab outside.”

“Nick, you can’t throw your Grandmother out. Not after a revelation like that.”

“Fuck, Ellie, don’t tell me you bought into that bullshit.”

“Nick, you need to sort this out. Ring Fraggle.”

“Ellie, she’s nothing but a lying whore.”

While Nick is talking, he grabs his grandmother by the arm and escorts her to the door. The slamming of the door, confirmation that he has dumped her on the porch.

“Nick, I believe you’re making a mistake.”

“No Ellie. I’m not. But you will be, if you listen to her lies.”

“Nick you threw her out of her own home. How do you think, she’s going to react. It’s the only home, she’s ever known.”

“Did you listen to anything I said, Ellie? When I told you about my childhood. Did you listen?”

The coldness in Nick’s voice is causing my body to shiver, and I doubt if I can cope with Nick like this.

“You’d better go Nick.”

“Ellie…”

“Go. I knew you were hard Nick. But putting and eighty plus year old woman out on the street is despicable.”

“I’ll be at the club when you’re ready to talk sensibly.”

Talk sensibly, after a few more moments of glaring and silence, Nick spun on his heels. The roar of the bike, echoing in my heart as he left the street.

Chapter 30

“Ellie, how much ice cream have you eaten?”

“Not enough.”

As Baby Blu grabs the spoon out of my hand, she reaches across the counter and removed the tub from my grasp. Annoyed at having my dinner taken from me, I attempt to grab the tub back.

“Hey, it’s rude to take food away from someone, when they haven’t finished eating.”

“Go take a shower Ellie.”

“Are you saying I stink?”

Cassie had tagged along with Baby Blu and Rayven, on her knee, she is nursing Isabella, or Bella as her father calls her. Cassie’s nose wrinkles as she looks at my sweat pants and matching hoodie.

“Ellie, it’s only been forty eight hours, and look at the state of you. No man is worth the extra pounds you’ll gain.”

“For your information Rayven, I’ve taken a vow of celibacy. Never again will a man get between my legs.”

“Shit, Ellie. What kind of ice cream are you eating?”

“Chocolate.”

“Chocolate”

“I read somewhere that chocolate has the same effect as good sex.”

“Crap.”

“Rayven. How can it be crap, when it was on a study paper?”

Rayven’s shoulders roll back as her eyes lift up to the ceiling.

“I’d rather give up chocolate, then sex.”

“Me too.”

“If you’re not going to take me seriously. You can all leave.”

“Stop being so melodramatic Ellie, and get that shower.”

Dismissed from my own kitchen, I make my way upstairs. Nick’s stuff is still in the house. Only this morning, when I had been looking for Amelia’s shoes, I had found a pair of his socks under the bed. Shit, his toiletries, where till in the bathroom.

As I sat on the crumpled bed, the faint smell of Nick reached my nose. Damn, I need to change the sheets, which have not been touched since Nick left. Dejectedly, I drop back onto the bed, and take a deep breath of the pillow next to me, before pulling it into my stomach, to hug it.

Rayven was right, I could not give sex up. Shit, I was still trying to figure out what had gone wrong. Had I been wrong in taking Nick’s grandmother’s side in their argument? Fuck, I had not taken her side. Only it baffled me, how Nick could throw an old woman onto the streets. Especially his own flesh and blood.

Shit, Nick needs me. And he was right. His grandmother is a bitch. Why wait all these years to tell Nick, he has a brother and sister. A brother, who is a member and president of a rival biker club.

An image of Yvette rose up in front of me. Was she aware of the blood connection? I hoped to fuck she has lied about her and Nick. Needing an answer, I reach for my cell and rang her number. Frustrated, when her phone went straight to voice mail, I hesitate about leaving a message. What I needed answers too, is not the kind of questions I should be leaving on voice mail. Next, I tried Fraggle’s, now my frustration is turning to anger, as his cell, also went straight to voice mail.

A conspiracy, there was a fucking conspiracy stopping me from contacting the people I need to talk to. A knock on the door, drags me back to the present as Rayven walks in.

“Who’s watching Kavan?”

“Baby Blue.”

Rayven, climbed onto the bed next to me. Her arm going round my neck, as she stroked the hair away from my face.

“He’s not answering my calls, Rayven.”

“They’re on a run, Ellie. I’m sure he’ll call you as soon as he can.”

The fan on the ceiling spun and spun and I cannot remove my gaze from the spinning blades.

“It was a stupid fight.”

“They usually are.”

“He’s going to be in mess Rayven and not thinking straight.”

“The brothers will look out for him, Ellie.”

Would they? Had he not recently pissed them off with his antics? And how will they react when they discover his connection with Tats. I have questions and they need answering. Secrets destroyed a family. Nick’s family is already dysfunctional, and he did not deserve this extra crap.

“Why would she do that Rayven? Why wait till now to tell him he has a brother and sister.”

“Because their twisted Ellie.”

“Well, I’m not going to sit here and let that bitch ruin things for Nick and me.”

With my mind made up, I jumped up off the bed and grabbed some clean clothes out of the wardrobe, then headed for my shower. When I reached the kitchen, Toby and Amelia were sat at the table, eating a pizza.

“We’ll watch them Ellie. You go and sort that bitch out.”

A pang of guilt twinges at my consciousness for a moment, as I kiss Cassie on the head, and said my thanks.

Comfort Springs only has one hotel, and the clerk willingly hands over Nick’s grandmother room details. When I arrive, it was to discover that the old woman is packing.

“You’re leaving?”

“There’s nothing here for me... Unless… Nick has changed his mind about the house?”

“Why did you do it?”

The old woman continued with her packing. This was her life. Her hate and vile attitude towards human life, has left her with nothing. Her son is dead. Her grandson hated her. It was also apparent, that her other grandson had no time for her either. I was torn between pitying this woman and loathing her.

“Why did you come to Nick for help? When you’ve been in contact with Tats?”

“You want to know why I came to Nikolas. When my father died, he left my home, to my husband. When my husband died, he left it to his son.”

Hatred shone from her brown eyes. Eyes, which must have scared a small boy. A boy who had lost his mother at a tender age.

“That was my house. My father’s house. And he gave it to my husband. Marcus is a bastard, just as his sister. Nikolas is a Chaumont. He may have his mother’s blood in him. But he has mine in him as well.”

The old woman locked the suitcase, the anger in her eyes has not abated.

“I was born in that house and I will die in it.”

As she gave the drawers and cupboards, one last inspection, the woman continued to mutter to herself. Concerned for her welfare, I stepped in front of the suite’s door.

“Nick’s sold the house, Mrs Winchester. You can’t go back there. Stay here till Nick gets back. He’ll find you somewhere to live.”

Eye to eye we stood, at the door. The old woman’s suitcase was on the floor by her side.

“Nikolas has made it clear I’m not wanted. I took that boy in when no one else did. And this is how he repays me. I don’t need his help or his charity. When you see Nikolas again.

Her eyes swept me up and down. Silently, I am grateful, that I was not the focal point of her madness.

“And I’m certain you will. Tell him thank you for everything.”

Then she was gone. As I stand to one side, I watch as one of the hotel’s staff, carry’s her suitcase down to the sidewalk out front. As I stand by the window, I watch as she climbs into a cab, and drove off. Not once, did she look back, or up to the room.

Unfortunately, the meeting with Nick’s grandmother has not gone, how I had expected. Our confrontation, has left me drained. Wearily, I sat on the bed and tried Nick’s number again, without success.

I was not going to let the Winchester’s beat me. Nick needs to know he is loved. That he does not have to face his demons on his own.

“Where did the flowers come from Mama?”

The flowers had been at the house waiting for me, when I returned from the hotel.

The card had been simple.

I’ll be home Sunday – Love You – Nick.

“They’re off Nick.”

Amelia climbed on to my knee, her tiny fingers, making for my hair as she played with the strands.

“When will Nick be home?”

“In a few days.”

Nick had rung and said he was due back Friday. Although the run was going well, he would not be returning to Comfort Springs straight away. When we spoke on the phone, we avoided talking about anything personal. He has not made any reference to his grandmother, and I have not told him, that she has left Comfort Springs.

It pissed me off, the neither Fraggle or Yvette were returning my calls. It was almost as if they had dropped off the planet.

“Can I be a flower girl when you get married mama?”

“What was that Amelia?”

“When you marry Nick, can I be a flower girl.”

“I’m not going to call him dad.”

“Hey, listen you two. Nick and I are friends, we haven’t discussed marriage.”

I love Nick. But marriage. It is too soon for marriage. The thought of us getting married, has never crossed my mind. I married Carl when I was young. It is something that I have no regrets about, and if I had to. Yes, I would marry him again in a shot. Carl’s life on this planet had been cut short, and I was lucky he chose me, to spend his time with.

I wanted marriage again.  But if it is to be with Nick, it was too soon to say.

“Don’t you love him, Mama?”

“Yes, Toby I do.”

“Well, then if you love him and he’s living in this house. You should marry him.”

“Grandma Eliza said you’ll marry him.”

I was shocked and surprised that my children have talked about Nick and my living situation with Eliza. Eliza is not a hundred percent behind Nick, or my relationship with him. I begin to hum as I tidied up. Maybe, just maybe, Nick’s charm is working on Eliza.

Chapter 31

As late as it was after my argument with Ellie, I ride over to Inferno’s. The last time, I went off on my own, it had pissed off the club. With two strikes already against me, I was not about to incur a third. I have it good, and now, is not the time to throw everything away, just because of that bitch.

Why she was out to cause trouble now, simply did not make sense. She has destroyed everyone’s life, and what have I done. I never reported the abuse. The shame, was enough to make me run. The house was too much for her, and is in despair, After all this time, I refuse to waste money repairing it. When I had been approached about selling the property, the offer, the company had made, was too good to turn down. Shit, from the sale, there was enough money to stick the old witch, into a decent retirement complex.

“This had better be good Fudge.”

Seen as I want to get on to the road, as quick as I can. I do not waste time with pleasantries. Before I return to Ellie, I was going to sort this mess out.

“Tats is my brother.”

“What?”

Inferno’s relaxed stance soon evaporated, and his body became still as I passed him, to stand in the hallway.

“You heard me.”

“Fuck, Fudge, whoever told you this, has to be winding you up.”

About to go into the full depth, of my family history, I spot Baby Blu standing in a doorway, fastening her housecoat up.

“Hi Fudge.”

“Baby Blu.”

“Hey, why don’t I leave you both to it?”

As she passes by, Baby Blu, lays a kiss on Inferno’s cheek and pats my arm. For a moment, as Inferno watches Baby Blu go upstairs, I lose him. However, as soon as she is out of sight, he leads us both into the kitchen, and fetches a couple of beers out of the fridge,
