Tiana remembered how in the phantasmagory, Jinriki had always been a dark cloud with silver eyes, and for a moment she wondered—

Kiar’s Logos speech became urgent and Twist moved forward a step before holding himself still. Lisette’s arm was light from shoulder to fingers. Something
snapped
.

The mist collapsed into a solid form. But instead of a sword, a naked man uncurled himself. He had golden skin and shaggy hair the color of dried blood and his eyes, when they opened, were silver.

As soon as his eyes opened, he sprang to his feet. Kiar’s speech cut off mid-syllable as she jerked backward.

**Where—?**
said Jinriki’s voice in Tiana’s mind, thin and distant.

“Where—?” said the man, his voice deep and rich and angry.

Minex beamed up at him. “Great Prince. And now I must sleep.”

The man looked down at Minex, then stared down at his hands. Then he looked up, directly at Tiana. With two long strides he crossed the small shrine until he loomed over her. She stared up at him, confused. He had Jinriki’s eyes, but Jinriki had been a sword...

“I heard my master,” said the man bleakly, as Jinriki said the same thing in her mind. “He called to me. It was time to come home. Vengeance didn’t matter anymore.” He hesitated, and his own gaze was as puzzled as Tiana felt. He muttered, “But I couldn’t go. I wanted to, but I couldn’t. Even when he called, I couldn’t leave
you
.”

T
his book has been
a long time coming. It could not have existed without the support of Raymond, the skills of Kevin, the cover art of Ravven, the enthusiasm of Rachel H., the feedback of Jenna and Suzanne, and the sharp eyes of Rachel G. and Daniel. Killian and Robin probably helped too.

Special thanks to Matrice, whose offer gave me a reason to write the book, and my supporters on Kickstarter and Patreon, who helped me get the cover.
