Huckleberry “Huck” Webb cares only about the two F’s in life – fighting and being the man-whore he is you can figure out the other. As an up and coming celebrity in the MMA world, he can have all the women he wants, no strings attached. And he does.
Chelsea Harmon is the good girl in a mess. She lived her life under the long arm of the law, her detective father. She couldn’t wait to escape. The big world out there was hers for the taking. Only if something is too good to be true, it usually is. The good girl finds herself in a very bad situation with a very powerful and wealthy man.
Everything changes for them both when Chelsea gets the call to come home. Her mom has stage four breast cancer and the future is uncertain. Doing what a good girl should, she drops everything and finds the perfect excuse to run from her present situation. What happens when two complete opposites find themselves together once more? Can Huck handle Chelsea’s past? Can Chelsea face it all and come out on the other side? After walking away once before, can Huck forgive the girl who always held his heart?
CHELSEA
SIX MONTHS AGO…
Lying with my head on Pavel’s chest, I sigh. “I wish you could stay the night.”
He strokes my hair. “I do, too, but I like to be home to put the children to bed.”
“So she’s still protesting the divorce?” I say softly.
He kisses my head. “That’s not for you to worry,
krasavitsa
.” Beautiful, he always calls me beautiful.
Sliding from under me, he gets up and begins putting his suit back on.
“Did those invoices come in from the Okeechobee dealership?”
I sit up, holding the sheet over my chest. “Yes. There are some things not matching up with them though.”
He waves me off with a hand. “Not your concern,
krasavitsa.
”
I’m not stupid. I was raised by a cop, I know half of what goes on through the car dealership I work for is illegal and to be honest, I don’t care. “Pavel,” I say softly, “I’m saying I think Markov is skimming off of the deals.”
That gets his attention. He spins around with a fiery look in his eyes. “Have the papers on my desk in the morning, first thing.” Grabbing his coat, he takes off out the door.
Looking out the windows of my condo, sipping my Jack neat, Miami Beach bustles below. I think about how my life has changed since Pavel came into it.
I was a shy small town girl with a few extra pounds and glasses when I’d walked into that dealership asking about the receptionist job. He looked deep into my eyes and hired me on the spot. Working at Volkov Cars came with its privileges. Starting out I didn’t make much, but really who does in any entry level position? Over those first few months I got raises. One’s that I didn’t see where I earned the merit. When word got to Pavel that I rode the bus to work, I
qualified
for a company car. I saw him watching me all of the time. I’d lost a few pounds thanks to the gym membership they offered employees. I got contacts thanks to insurance. My life was changing for the better. He made it a point sometimes to include me in conversations or be in my personal space. He flirted, but he never crossed the line.
Then I came in one day and found a gift on my desk. Opening it, I found a pair of Manolo Blahnik shoes with a note.
Sexy legs should be showcased by sexy shoes. PV
That’s where this all started. He wasn’t at the dealership when I opened the gift, so I sat them on his desk with a note.
I’m sorry. These are beautiful but I cannot accept them.CH
I knew gifts like that were inappropriate. I also knew he was married and had children. Later that evening I was one of the last people to leave. As I was turning off my computer, he appeared beside me.
“Chelsea, dear, I don’t like my gifts being returned.”
“Mr. Volkov, they’re just too much. I don’t feel like it’s appropriate. I’m your employee.”
Stepping closer, he touches the side of my face. “You’re a work of beauty and you deserve beautiful things.” Before I can stop him, he’s kissing me. He moans, pushing me against the desk, working his way in between my legs. Pulling back, he looks into my eyes. “Take the shoes.”
I sigh and shake my head. “You have a wife. We can’t do this.” I knew in reality that we’d been dancing around his flirting for a while, but this was too far.
He runs a hand up the outside of my thigh. “My wife is nothing more than a roommate. We no longer sleep in the same room, our divorce is in the processing phase now. I want you. You’re so beautiful. So pure.” He leans closer to my ear and speaks. “Tell me, krasavitsa, have you ever been with a man?”
I nod my head and he shakes his head in disappointment. “How many?” If it weren’t for the fact that my panties were soaking wet and my nipples were straining against my bra, I probably would’ve realized how completely wrong this was.
I look up into his eyes and speak softly. “Two. Only two.”
He gives a soft smile as his hand moves to the inside of my thigh. “Still so pure. Only twenty years old, but still so pure.”
Sirens below break my thoughts from the memories. This all started almost six years ago. Six years ago he was divorcing his wife and had two small children. Now, he’s still in a distant marriage with a ten year old son and an eight year old daughter. I’m just his overpaid secretary. I have a high-rise condo on Miami Beach that he pays for. I have an Infiniti that he bought for me that’s in my name. I have numerous pairs of expensive shoes and suits to match. He only stays with me when his wife and kids are out of town. I’m basically an almost twenty-six year old, high priced call girl. I shouldn’t say that, he gets upset when I say that.
Finishing my drink, I look back down at the city once more, remembering the small town I came from. My father would be livid with me for the way I’ve turned out. Screw him. I stand up and head to bed, I have a feeling tomorrow will be a long day.
~*~*~
Walking into work this morning, I go straight to my desk and grab the invoices from yesterday. Making my way into Pavel’s office, I see he’s already here. I smile thinking about how he felt inside of me last night. “Good morning, Mr. Volkov, here are those invoices.”
He smiles. “Yes, Ms. Harmon, thank you. Can you come over here and show me the areas you were concerned about?”
I nod and make my way around his desk. He places a hand on my ass as I point out the discrepancies on the invoices. He runs his hand up the back side of my skirt. “Mmm. You’re wearing the garter belts today. Such a minx,
krasavitsa,
” he says as he snaps one of the straps against my leg.
Suddenly the door opens, Pavel drops his hand and his wife comes in digging through her purse. “Dear, I hope you don’t mind, Chelsea wasn’t at her desk.” She looks up and sees me. “Oh, here you are, dear. I was just coming to collect Pavel for my doctor’s appointment.”
Pavel smiles. “Yes, we were just going over some invoices Chelsea found a problem with.” He turns to me. “Thank you, Chelsea.”
I’m unable to respond or say anything because I notice the baby bump his wife is sporting under her dress. All I can do is nod and make my way out to my desk.
I’m stupid. I’m so freaking stupid. I believed all this time he wasn’t sleeping with his wife. I believed that his marriage was virtually over.
He doesn’t come back all day. I go through the motions and then go home to my empty condo. I fix myself a lean cuisine and a double Jack neat for dinner. As I’m finishing, there is a knock at my door. I open it to see Pavel with roses. I step back and let him in. He leans in to kiss me but I turn away.
“I’m sorry,
krasavitsa,
I never meant for you to find out like that,” he says softly.
My eyes bulge. “Really?! You never meant for me to find out what? That you were never getting divorced? That you’re having sex with your wife and me both? That you are in fact in the same bedroom? That I’m nothing more than a fucking hooker? What exactly didn’t you want me to find out?”
“It’s complicated,
krasavitsa
,” he says, trying to reach for me.
I pull back. “Quit calling me that!”
About that time, my cell phone rings. Seeing it’s my mother, I glare at him and answer.
“Hi, Mom.”
“Chelsea, how are you doing?” It’s not my mom. It’s my dad. He never calls me, hell, he barely talks to me. He always felt the need to keep me under a microscope.
I take a deep breath. “Dad. I’m okay, just dealing with a lot of
bullshit
at work.” I level my eyes on Pavel.
He glares back at me.
“That’s always tough,” he says distantly. This doesn’t sound like my father. This man sounds almost broken.
“Dad, what’s going on? You sound upset.”
“Your mom has been sick, they ran some tests.” He sighs and I hear rustling around.
“What’s going on, Dad? You’re scaring me.” He never calls. He and I have probably spoken on the phone ten times since I moved away from home so this is freaking me out.
“She has stage four breast cancer,” he says in that law enforcement voice. The voice that takes the emotions out of everything.
My eyes well up and I sink to the floor of my kitchen. “O-okay. What are they planning to do?”
“Well, she’s going to have some surgeries and some treatments. I think it’ll all be fine. The oncologist seems optimistic.” He sighs. “But I called to see if you could take a leave of absence for a while or something and come help. Your mother is rather upset. With the costs of our copays and the medications, I won’t be able to take time off to be with her and she’s going to need someone.”
“Dad, I-.”
“I know we haven’t gotten along the best, but I could really use you right now. I think it would lift your mom’s spirits a little.”
I have to go to my mom, I’m not ready to see my dad but my mom has always been in my corner. I nod my head as if he can see. “Sure, I’ll get things taken care of here and then I’ll be there.”
“Thank you, Chelsea. Your mom sends her love,” he says gruffly.
“Tell Mom I love her, too.”
Funny,he never said he loves me
.
Then again he never does. I’ve never been worthy of such emotion from him. I look to Pavel. Huh, funny, I’ve never been worthy of such emotion from any man, have I?
I finally realize that Pavel is standing over me. “Are you all right?”
I shake my head violently, letting the tears fall. “No, I’m moving home.”
“Don’t do this, Chelsea. She still means nothing to me.”
I stand up quickly. “Fuck you! This isn’t about you. This entire world doesn’t revolve around you! My father just called to tell me that my mom has stage four breast cancer. He asked me to move home to help with her care. This has
nothing
to do with you.” I give a little snort. “But if I had to do this, it couldn’t come at a better time because I was turning in my notice tomorrow anyway.”
“Don’t leave me. What will I do?”
I start walking back toward my bedroom to pack. “Hire a new secretary,” I say defiantly. “I’m sure it won’t take you long to get into her panties either. Or better yet, maybe you could just keep screwing your wife. Seems like you guys have been working on that.”
He spins me around and slaps me across the face. “Don’t talk yourself down that way. You know your heart belongs to me.”
“How can I not talk down about myself? You did this, you made me a high dollar mistress. I have nothing. I don’t have someone to hold me while I sleep at night, I don’t get to have children with you or go on vacations with you. I’m nothing but a side fuck. So yes, you may own my heart, but I damn sure don’t own yours. Do me a favor, just leave me alone. I’m packing my clothes and a few personal things, you can get rid of the condo. I’m done with all of this,” I motion around.
“I will not get rid of your condo. You’ll come to your senses soon enough. You will be back. You go, get your mother well and then come home,” he says in an authoritative tone.
I sling a suitcase on the bed. “You know I’ll more than likely be taking care of my mother until she dies. You get that, right? Look, the car is in my name and I think I’ve spread my legs more than enough to pay for it. I’m not even taking all of these clothes, so just do us both a favor. Get rid of the condo. Oh and I won’t be at work tomorrow. Consider this my notice,” I say as I’m walking into my bathroom and grabbing stuff to pack.
I hear something shatter and then the front door slam.
My heart rate finally slows down and I sit in the middle of my bed crying.
Tomorrow I go back to a place I’d never planned on going back to. To face my father, the man I tried my damnedest to get away from.
