“Fuck off, old man,” Franz said and then taking a firm grip on my wrist we went outside to the snowmobile area and after putting on helmets and parkas, Franz patted the backseat of the vehicle, I got on it, and we took off for the ski lesson.

STILL TICKED OFF,
Franz finished teaching and even though the students thanked him, he replied gruffly and had barely spoken to me all day.

I looked up at the sky off to the North and thunderheads were gathering.  Franz looked up too.  “I have to go check on some remote cabins we have.  Guests may have stayed in them today and I want to make sure they get home safely.  It’s too dangerous for you to come along.  Can I ask you to wait for me in the lobby?  I shouldn’t be long.”

He escorted me to the lobby, made sure I had a hot chocolate to sip on and a book to read and then glowering at his father who was about to wander over to the fireplace where I was sitting, almost ran out the door so he wouldn’t have to converse with him.

I looked at Jurgen Eigner when he came over and felt the powerful family resemblance. A few years ago, and before I met Franz, I would have been interested in him.  Now, I felt so deeply about Jurgen’s son that it drove everything else from my mind.

I put on my most welcoming smile, patted the sofa cushion next to me, and then began one of the most fascinating conversations of my life.

I’D FALLEN ASLEEP
on the sofa after Jurgen pulled a soft afghan over me so I’d keep warm.  I woke up to the windows rattling from thunder and a blinding snowstorm.  Some guests were huddled in the lobby for safety because the windows were huge and now, staff had drawn the shutters and drapes so they could shut out the storm.

Jurgen was at the front desk, on the phone.  He had his cell phone in the other hand.
He was screaming, in German, into both.

After slamming down the receiver and throwing the cell phone across the room, he looked up at me and walked over slowly.  His face was grim.

I felt panic in the pit of my stomach.

He took my hands in his and swallowed.

He told me one thing that made my life fall away before me.

He said, “We haven’t heard from Franz  at all.  He hasn’t checked in all day and it’s getting dark and the storm’s arrived.  We can’t send out anyone to look for him. The only hope is that he managed to find shelter in that remote cabin he was going to check on.”

I began to cry and leaning over to Jurgen I rested my head on his shoulder.

He looked down at me as I told him “He can’t die.  I love him already.”

He ran his hand up and down my arm trying to comfort me.

After a very long time I fell asleep in his arms.
