bars that wore no chains. It just lay on the floor. Gray rotted

me. Its cracked lips moved. I tried to figure out what it was
saying, but Zoe clutched my arm and said, “Focus.”

I spotted Blaze. He was completely naked and
chained to the bed. His eyes were closed. His chest weakly rose up

“Blaze.” I headed toward him.

“Carmen?” he whispered and opened his eyes.
“No.”

Those chocolate eyes concentrated on me for a

spell.

Blaze weakly turned to Zoe. “You
promised.”

“She threatened me.” Zoe shrugged. More

“I told you I would kill you.” Blazed
coughed.

“Well, the odds of you both getting out are
low, so I’ll fear your threat later.” Zoe guided me to the silver
and sage chains wrapped around Blaze’s ankle. “Hurry.”

“Carmen, you can’t,” Blaze hissed.

“Unseal each link with the power of unnamed
kings.” I sliced the first chain with my knife. The links cracked.
Smoke rose from the sage as it burned. A rush of relief flowed

I raced to the other bindings and chanted the
words again.

“Okay. I’m getting back to the realm.” Zoe
went to the far corner of the room. “Remember, Adae’s bidding
schedule said Blaze will be picked up in ten hours. Be aware of the
time.”

“No,” Blazed groaned.

The air thickened with demon magic and then
the power immediately thinned.

“You’re too weak to stop me.” I cut the
chains on his other ankle.

“If you release me,” Blaze whispered as I cut
the last chain. “Adae will hunt you and Jade for the rest of your
lives.”

He was free from all the chains, but he
remained on the bed scowling at me. I cut myself, poured my blood
on the knife so it wouldn’t explode, and then threw it to the
floor.

“We’ll figure all of that out later,” I said
and pulled at his hand.

His hand fell back onto the bed.

“Get up,” I said.

“Adae starved me for my new master,” he
replied

A crack sounded behind me. I glanced over my
shoulder. Zoe disappeared.

“Then let’s give you energy.” I smiled and

Those blue eyes froze me to my core.

I know those eyes.

“Your heart is beating out of your chest,”
Blaze said. “Don’t fear that vampire. He’s weak and starved like
me. I don’t know why Adae put him over there; something about
further torture.”

“Carm.” The word escaped its pale cracked
lips.

My heart stopped.

“Are you sure it is a vampire?” I asked,
sitting up.

My hand left Blaze’s warm flesh.

“Yes,” he said. “Why?”

“He is saying Carm,” I muttered. “That’s what
my husband called me.”

“Wait a minute.” Blaze lifted his head for
few seconds and then dropped back on the bed. “It’s just a vampire.
He could have known your husband and found out the nickname.”

“Carm.” The vampire pressed its body on the
bars.

Is it him?

I jumped from the bed. My heart thumped in my
ears. I made myself relax and checked my watch. I still had several
hours.

“No, Carmen!” Blaze heaved himself up and
then collapsed back on the bed. “Damn it. Do not go over
there.”

“Just let me check.” I walked over, reaching
for all the courage I had inside of me. “Save your energy, Blaze.
You’ll have to fly us out of here.”

Blaze snarled. “Do not go near him.”

“Relax,” I muttered as I approached the
bars.

The scent of crushed roses surrounded me.

Mason?

It had to be him. I had lived with that scent

Anger bit at my nerves. I formed my fingers
into a fist, and then I asked through clenched teeth, “Mason?”

He nodded. Rotting gray flesh covered his
face. He was bald except for a few matted patches of blond

closer. His eyes centered on my neck.

“You want my blood?” I asked.

He nodded.

I flashed an evil grin. “I want answers.”

“And I want you away from him,” Blaze hissed.
A boom rumbled from his direction.

“Blaze, he won’t hurt me.” I scowled at
Mason, targeting him with my eyes.

“I’m…weak.” Mason leaned in closer to the
bars. “Please…blood.”

He gazed longingly at my neck.

“You can drink from my finger for a few
seconds.” I pushed my hand through the bars. “Then you tell me why
you abandoned your daughter and wife with a huge debt.”

Mason’s eyes widened. “I didn’t.”

“No!” Blazed roared.

I placed my finger between Mason’s lips.

shimmered, reflecting a deep sky blue that always reminded me of

Cracking noises banged around him as his face

“Then why did you abandon us?” I backed away

“I’ve been in this cell the whole time.”
