Only once she'd turn the corner did Killian finally turn on his laptop, waking it back up from its asleep state. He checked to make sure she wasn't circling back yet - he didn't want her to see the pictures displayed on the screen.

Quickly, he minimized the web page filled with photos of wedding rings. After all, he thought to himself, he didn't want to spoil the surprise.

That was one more purchase he had to make, one more item on his to do list that he still had to acquire. But already, he was imagining how he'd ask, what he'd say as he knelt down on one knee. He didn't exactly know the words he'd use, but he knew that his emotions were true, that he'd be able to speak from the heart.

But for now, he told himself, he should sit back and relax, not worry about rushing forward. He already felt happier these days than he could remember feeling for years.

Switching over to his next manuscript, Killian took a sip of coffee, letting the warm liquid roll down his throat, and then began typing. He listened to the bustle of the diner around him, the clinking of forks and spoons, the hiss of cooking food in the kitchen, and the conversations between regulars and some of the truckers passing through the town.

He'd come to Commerce seeking to escape his past.

Now, it seemed, he'd managed to find his future.
