As ‘Rock ’n’ Roll Star’ came to its victorious conclusion, instead of going straight into another song Alistair and Baxter turned off the music until they had the attention of everyone in the room. They each grabbed a can of Foster’s from the side of their decks, opened them in unison and, holding them aloft, yelled across the room ‘To absent friends!’ and we all raised our bottles and glasses in the air. For a few minutes afterwards no one moved; everyone seemed to be looking to Alistair and Baxter to see what would happen next. Baxter gave me a sly wink and nudged Alistair who reached across to his record box, pulled a twelve-inch single out of its sleeve and laid it gently on the turntable. ‘Live Forever’ came out of the speakers and, feeling as though I’d finally been set free, I set down the drink in my hand and along with everyone in the room closed my eyes and sang my heart out.
