“I have not done anything besides put you in danger Roslyn; he has every right to be angry at me.”

Roslyn moved over to Katlyn, “You have given me a chance to have a child.” Holding up her hand she cut off Katlyn’s protest, “I know, it may not work out the way I am hoping, but you gave me a chance. That is worth more then anything else in my life and I thank you for it.”

Micah’s father leaned forward over the table and cut into the conversation, “How are you feeling after all of the excitement today my dear?”

Katlyn smiled at him, “I am feeling fine, a little tired maybe.”

“Do you need to go lay down?” Micah leaned over looking into her eyes. She didn’t need to push herself anymore today. It was too much.

“No, Micah. I’m fine. Let’s eat and then I will go rest.” Squeezing his hand gently she smiled, “Trust me, I will tell you if it gets to be too much. Okay?”

Micah ran his had through his hair, “As you wish sweetheart.”

“So Katlyn, tell us about this egg donation that has caused all of these problems.” William leaned forward in his seat. “I am interested how this can happen.”

Katlyn set her fork down and looked over the table at the family sitting there. “When a female is born she is born with thousands of eggs. Because there are so many that we don’t really need we have the option of taking them and sharing them. Maria helped by taking some of these eggs out of me and fertilizing these eggs under a microscope.” At their look of disbelief Katlyn smiled, “I know it isn’t glamorous and it doesn’t fit into the perfect mold but it did work. Mariah got a couple of the eggs to fertilize and was able to place them into Sophia and Roslyn. Now we pray that they take and all the children will be well.”

William looked over at Maria; “This is truly possible? To have a child this way?”

Maria smiled, “I guess you don’t remember that they used to do this for couples that were having issues having babies. It was such a long time ago.”

“I remember. But didn’t those women usually have more than one child at a time?” Micah’s mother shook her head.

“Yes, that is a possibility and I believe some of them will have multiple births going forward, but if there are twins born to a family they will be twice blessed.” Katlyn looked up at William and Lenec. “We will not know if it has worked for a few more days and if it does both women will need to take it easy. We are risking so much by trying to blend the species.”

Katlyn smiled over at Micah and took his hand, “But as a wonderful man once told me, God will find a way.”

Chapter 11

“Today is the day.” Katlyn smiled as she ran into Roslyn in the hall. “Are you ready to find out?”

“Yes! It has been driving me crazy for the last few days. Come with me to the clinic?” Roslyn slowed and took Katlyn by the arm smiling from ear to ear. She couldn’t wait to find out. She had wanted a child for so long and now there was a real possibility that she could get what she was looking for.

“Of course I’ll come. Sophia is being tested also, correct?”

“Yes, I hope that she is also able to carry a child.” Roslyn ran a hand over her belly and smiled softly. “Lenec will be so happy if it has taken. He says that it doesn’t matter to him if we are able to conceive a child or not but what man does not want a son to carry on his name?”

“Roslyn, you know there are dangers to doing this right?” Katlyn didn’t want to be the devils advocate but Roslyn needed to be aware of both sides of the story. Looking at this through rose tinted glasses was a bad idea.

Roslyn looked up at Katlyn and smiled, “I know the dangers and I know that I may not be able to carry this child to full term but you can’t begrudge me a little hope.” She was not going to allow any doubt to invade her thoughts today. She would concentrate on the positive side for today.

Katlyn backed off and smiled, “When do we need to go?”

“I was headed out right now as a matter of fact. Let’s grab Sophia and walk over.” Roslyn moved to the kitchen talking nonstop. “What are you wanting a boy or a girl?”

Katlyn smiled, “A girl would be great but Micah wants a boy. He hasn’t said so but you can tell.”

As they went through the kitchen and into the living room they saw Sophia sitting on the couch reading.

“Sophia, are you ready to go to the clinic?”

Sophia looked up and set her book down, “I think I’m going to wait to be tested.” She had been hoping they would leave together and not come looking for her. She really didn’t feel like explaining the wealth of emotions that were running through her just yet.

Katlyn paused looking at Sophia’s expression, “Why?”

This was odd, why in the world wouldn’t she want to know if she was pregnant? Katlyn looked in her eyes and it hit her. She was scared. Katlyn sat next to her and took her hand.

Sophia looked down at the floor and sighed. “I’m not sure I want to be disappointed again. We have gone through so many tests in the past few years and each time I was given false hope. Right now I want to have a little of the hope but I don’t want the disappointment to ruin it.”

Katlyn smiled at Sophia and squeezed her hand. “If you don’t have the test you will wonder and worry. At least by having the test you will know.”

Sophia looked over at Roslyn then back at Katlyn, “You are both going?”

“Yes. If you would like we will run Roslyn’s test first. Then you can decide if you want to know.” Katlyn eased up off the couch and pulled her to her feet. “At least join us for Roslyn’s test. She needs a little support.”

Roslyn threaded her arm through Sophia’s, “Come with me? I need you there with me Sophia.”

Sophia looked between Katlyn and Roslyn, “I’m not going to get away with staying home alone am I?” From the looks of it she was pretty much doomed.

Katlyn and Roslyn laughed together, “Nope. You are coming with us. We can’t make you take the test but we can keep you from moping.”

By the time they got to the clinic they had somehow helped to lift Sophia’s mood until she was back to anticipating the arrival of babies back on the planet again.

“Santi, how are you today?” Katlyn greeted the receptionist as they walked into the clinic.

“Katlyn! It’s good to see you again. Did you have an appointment?” Santi looked down at her paperwork with a puzzled frown, “I don’t remember making one for you.”

“No, I don’t. We are here to see Maria about Roslyn. She should be expecting us.” Katlyn leaned on the counter as Santi looked over the appointment schedule.

“There we go, I have it. Come on girls let’s get you back to see her.” Santi moved from around the desk and led the way down the hall. “Katlyn, how are you feeling after your run in with Dr. Wallis? Is everything still okay?”

Katlyn smiled at her and nodded, “I’m fine. It will take more than that to keep me down.”

“Glad to hear it. I know Micah was beside himself with worry. Here we go ladies; I’ll let her know you are here.”

“Thank you Santi.” Katlyn, Roslyn and Sophia moved into the room and sat to wait for Maria.

In a couple of minutes Maria came in writing on a clipboard. “Great! You all came. I was hoping to get some detailed tests done on each of you.” She needed more documentation in case this worked. It would help with future patients.

Katlyn looked at Roslyn, “On all of us?”

Maria looked up and smiled, “Yes, on all of you. On you I want to do an ultrasound to see what I can so far and on Roslyn and Sophia I would like to see if they are pregnant.”

Katlyn paused, “An ultra sound already?”

Maria smiled, “Well, you said last time that you were not sure when you had gotten pregnant. You could very well be a couple of months along.”

“If I was that far along would you have been able to harvest eggs from me?”

“It’s possible; unlikely but possible.” Maria sat on the stool across the room, “It is just my own curiosity, and I want to see how things are progressing.” She shrugged, “It’s a new experience even for me and I need to know that everything is going okay.”

“Okay, I would love to see the ultrasound. Who do you want first?”

“I’ll go first.” Roslyn was almost bouncing in her seat. “I have been going crazy waiting for this.”

Maria laughed at her, “Okay, you first.”

Roslyn held out her arm as Maria took the blood sample, “Okay, it’ll take a few minutes for us to find out. Sophia? Do you want me to pull yours at the same time?”

Sophia frowned slightly, “Not yet. I want to see how Roslyn’s comes out first.” She really did not want to be disappointed again.

Maria paused and frowned back at Sophia “Is there something I should know about?” If Sophia was having doubts about wanting to get pregnant she should know, this would be risky enough as it was.

Katlyn shook her head slightly and smiled at Maria, “She is debating about doing her test today. Sophia needs a little more time to adjust.”

“Okay. Let’s wait for Roslyn’s test and then we will see if you would like to do yours then.” Maria took the blood out of the room and came back a second later. “It’ll take a couple of minutes to run through the machine before I can analyze it. I’ll be back in a second, I have another patient I need to check on real quick.”

After a few minutes Roslyn looked at Katlyn, “How in the world did you stand waiting for the test to be done?”

Katlyn smiled, “It was a little different on my side. I didn’t have years of dealing with infertility and testing. I didn’t have years of knowing that getting pregnant wasn’t going to happen. Don’t get me wrong, it felt like the ten minutes to get an answer took forever but I am sure this is so much harder on you.”

Sophia took Roslyn’s hand, “It’ll be okay, you’ll see.”

Katlyn thumbed absently through a magazine that was sitting on the table, trying to distract herself.

“Okay, we ready?” Maria walked back into the room.

Roslyn smiled, “As ready as I am going to be.”

Maria began going over the lab results. “Hmmm. It looks like you are pregnant.”

“Really?” Katlyn watched as tears ran down Roslyn’s face. “I don’t know what to say.” Finally, a child after all of these years of testing and experiments.

Katlyn reached over and hugged her. “This is great news Roslyn! I wonder if you will get that little boy you want.”

Sophia looked over at Roslyn and Katlyn, “I’m not sure if I want to do the test.”

“Why Sophia?” Maria reached out and took her hand.

“The odds are against me now. Katlyn is pregnant and now Roslyn, what are the odds that I am also that lucky?” Sophia looked over at Roslyn, “I am happy for you, really I am. I just need to be alone for a bit.” Standing she moved to the exit, “I will see you all at dinner.” She quickly exited and they watched her walk down the road alone deep in thought.

“Why is she refusing the test?” Maria looked at her sisters and frowned.

“She is afraid that it will be bad news. She is avoiding getting it.” Katlyn looked over at Maria. “Maybe she will come back on her own, without an audience. That might be easier on her, talk to her when you’re alone.”

“I’ll do that.” Maria looked at Katlyn, “Are you ready for the ultrasound?”

Katlyn moved over to the cot and hoped up, “Ready.”

Warming up the machine Maria pulled out the gel and plugged the wand in. “You said you are wanting a girl didn’t you?”

Katlyn laughed, “And Micah would like a boy. So I guess we see who win, well, we will in a couple of months. It’s way too soon right now.”

Tracing the wand over Katlyn’s stomach she looked at the image on the monitor. Slowly she began looking around the image trying to find evidence of the pregnancy.

“Katlyn, something doesn’t look right to me on this. I need to have someone else look at it if you don’t mind.” Maria opened her communicator and spoke softly into it.

“What isn’t right?” Katlyn rose up slightly looking at the monitor but all she could see was a static blur. Not getting an answer from Maria, Katlyn sat up and looked over at her, “What isn’t right Maria?”

Maria frowned slightly and closed the communicator, “It’s not that there is anything wrong; I just don’t understand what I am seeing. I have asked a friend to come in and look at these, I hope you don’t mind.”

At the worried look on Katlyn’s face she smiled, “He is a special person that I have been seeing. Please, give him a chance.”

Katlyn raised an eyebrow at the ‘been seeing’ comment. It did not sound like professional interaction was what she was speaking of. Katlyn wondered if maybe there was something going between her and whomever she had been speaking to.

The young man that entered minutes later was clean cut, short black hair, with light blue eyes. “Ladies, I am Dr. Mills, a friend of Maria’s. What can I do to help you?”

“Steve? I’m doing an ultrasound on Katlyn here and wanted you to give me a second opinion.”

Steve stopped and looked at the monitor above her head, “An ultra sound? Does she have a cyst?” Looking at Katlyn he smiled, “Do you mind if I look?”

“Go ahead.” Katlyn lay back down and waited to see what he said. Surely it was nothing to worry about.

Taking the wand from Maria he began moving it and looking at the screen. His frown deepened as he looked at the screen. “Maria? She’s pregnant? What’s going on here?”

“Katlyn is one of the chosen and yes she is pregnant, but keep looking.” Maria waited for him to find what she had seen on the monitor.

Steve looked back at Katlyn, “I’m pleased to meet you Katlyn. So, Maria, if you already knew she was pregnant why did you call me? Oh, I think I see it.” Steve paused looking at the screen then moved the wand to the other side of Katlyn’s belly for another look.
