Gavin raised two fingers to his forehead in a casual salute, nearly sloshing champagne over himself as he forgot he was holding the glass.
“Before we toast the happy couple, one more special thank you and that’s to Chloe for designing it and Maggie for making the quite amazing dress Schez is wearing. I know it’s given her a lot of pleasure wearing it today, and certainly emphasises how petite she is. I just hope there are decent child bearing hips buried under all those layers.”
More roars of laughter had Schez blushing furiously and Adam looked rather pink too.
“Enough of that – ladies and gentlemen, I give you the bride and groom.” He raised his glass as did all the guests. “Schez, Adam, we all wish you great happiness together. Love, support and protect each other and the world’s troubles won’t beat you.”
There was a huge round of applause while the waiters scurried around refilling glasses and James took Oliver’s place on the stage.
“Don’t worry Schez,” he told her. “I’m the last one. I just wanted to say a few words about life and families. As most of you probably know, it’s been rather a roller coaster year for my family. Each one of us, though, has discovered that it’s never too late to make major, life-changing decisions. And they certainly don’t come much bigger than getting married! Adam, you and I grew up together and I’m really chuffed you’ve finally been caught and bear the ring to prove it. You are dear friends and wonderful people and we all wish you long life and happiness as you start this whole new phase of your lives.
“Now I’m hoping that our children will grow up together, as we did, so you’d better get a move on as Keela and I have started the countdown to that other life changing event.”
All eyes swung to Keela and noted her glass of orange juice, not champagne. There was a round of applause and various congratulatory calls.
“So, my toast will be – to friends, families and new beginnings!”

About Jay Howard
Jay currently lives in Somerset, which she considers to be a gem among English counties. She has lived and worked in many places in England, Wales, Alberta and British Columbia. Holding dual citizenship through her father, who was born in Toronto, a visit to her ‘other country’ included a stay in her father’s city followed by the four day train journey to the West coast. She describes the trip as ‘the only way for an English visitor to start to comprehend the vastness and diversity of this land’.
While admitting that trying so many different areas of work may not be ideal for most people, Jay believes that her experiences have given her insights that enrich her writing. She describes writing as ‘enormously enjoyable and satisfying, but second only to golf in the level of frustration that must be endured to achieve the desired goal’.
Jay is currently writing the sequel to Never Too Late. Called New Beginnings it is due for publication in the summer of 2012.
