Chapter 9: The Bond
When Bradley awoke, the Alpha was gone. He felt a slight disappointment, and wondered whether the Alpha had mated with him due to him coming into heat or if they had a connection.
He swam across the lake and rested on the rocks, surprised at how easily he had become tired. He knew he was stronger than that, but he suspected that it might have been because of all the strenuous activity last night. He went back to the main area to take orders for the day, which were probably to lift the Mountain Ash, but he was told that other wolves were already seeing to it. He tried to find Tyler, but he was nowhere to be seen. He went to the den and was greeted by Estelle.
“Hello, Bradley,” she said. “Would you like to come in for tea?”
“No, thank you. I was just looking for…”
“For Tyler,” said Estelle, smiling. A knowing look in her eyes.
Bradley did not dare speak. He did not want to offend Estelle, the Alpha female of the pack. Tyler, in all likelihood, was to have pups with her. The strongest wolf always picks the strongest she-wolf for a mate.
“It’s okay,” said Estelle. “I know about you and him.”
“You do?” said Bradley, suddenly shy, his eyebrow raised.
“With the way you two were howling and moaning last night, the entire forest knows.”
“Oh, wow, didn’t expect that. What does this mean?”
“Come here,” said Estelle.
She looked at Bradley from head to toe, then raised her eyebrows.
“How can it be,” she asked.
“How can what be,” asked Bradley.
“Wait. Do you feel different?”
“I think I am bound to feel different after last night,” he said.
“That you are, no, that’s not what I meant. It’s just something I suspect, can’t be sure.” said Estelle, then turned into a wolf for no reason.
In respect, Bradley shifted too.
Estelle walked around Bradley, carefully noting any changes, then shifted back into human form, and Bradley followed.
“I think you ought to go to the infirmary,” said Estelle.
“OK, I’ll go now,” said Bradley.
“Oh,” she said, as Bradley turned around, “why don’t you spend the night at the den? I will set up the bedroom.”
Bradley nodded, since Estelle didn’t really ask. She only stated. But she was being extra kind to him today, and she had a sly, knowing look on her face.
At the infirmary, when the nurse asked Bradley why he was there, he told her Estelle sent him.
“Estelle told you to come here,” said the nurse, laughing. “Oh, that woman never ceases to surprise me. Come here, I know what to do.”
She knew what she was doing and she only conducted one test. She tested his urine, then came back from the lab 15 minutes later, smiling.
“What is it,” asked Bradley, worried and confused.
“It is just as I suspected,” said the nurse, “no other reason Estelle would have sent you here.”
“Please tell me what it is,” asked Bradley.
“All right, all right,” she said. “You’re pregnant. We have to wait a while before we can find out the number of pups, but you’re definitely pregnant.”
At night, Bradley walked to the den. He was confused, unsure of how Tyler would react. He knocked on the door and Rudolph opened it. He didn’t say anything, only motioned for him to come in. Estelle invited him to dine with them, and, after dinner, excused herself. Bradley saw her signal to Rudolph to leave the table.
When Tyler and Bradley were alone, Tyler spoke.
“Estelle says you have something to tell me.”
“I do,” said Bradley. “It’s been worrying me all day.”
“What is it,” he asked directly.
“I don’t know how to say it,” mumbled Bradley.
“Go on, say it, I won’t bite. Not unless…” he grinned.
“Don’t be mad at me, okay,” began Bradley. “Estelle sent me to the doctor and I found out that I am pregnant. We’re expecting a pup.”
“What, are you sure,” barked Tyler.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t want to upset you. But I had to tell you,” he said.
“I asked, ‘Are you sure?’” said Tyler, putting extra emphasis on each word.
“Yes, I am sure. The nurses confirmed it. I’m sorry.”
“Hahaha,” Tyler broke into laughter. “Why are you sorry? I’m not mad. The only thing I’m mad about is you.”
“What?” he looked up, suddenly blushing.
“I said I’m madly in love with you” said Tyler. “Now come over here.”
Bradley walked over to where Tyler was sitting. Tyler grabbed his hand and pulled him into his lap as Bradley put an arm around him.
“What’s next,” asked Bradley.
“This,” said Tyler, and sank his fangs into Tyler’s neck, drawing blood from it.
Bradley passed out and Tyler carried him to bed.
In the morning, when Bradley woke up, he felt strange. It felt like his mind had gained access to another dimension, to all the thoughts of another being. It didn’t take him long to realize that those thoughts belonged to Tyler.
Estelle knocked on the door and entered the room with breakfast. Bradley tried to get up, but Estelle stopped him.
“Stay,” she said.
“What happened to me?”
“Tyler formed a bond with you. I know it must be overwhelming, but he chose you for a mate.”
Bradley smiled to himself, suddenly content. The bond was the strongest form of love among the wolves. It lasted as long as the wolf lived. He could not have asked for anything more.
