Chapter 38

The doctor breezes in the room. “Well, Ms. Garrett, I hear congratulations are in order.”

I acknowledge him. “Yes
, I guess so. I’m still reeling from it all.”

Judd speaks up. “How did her blood work and all come back? Is everything okay there?”

The doctor smiles. “Yes, you are doing fine. You’re a little dehydrated, that’s the reason for the dizzy spell. You need to take it easy for a few days and drink. I know you may not feel like eating but drink plenty, especially if you’ve been vomiting.  The little ones are going to take the wind out of you.”

Judd looks up at the doctor. “So what else do we need to do? What about her school, is she okay to do her clinicals? What about being on her feet?”

The doctor holds up his hands. “Slow down, son. You’re going to have a stroke. Good thing we’re at the emergency room, huh?” The doctor laughs in my direction. “I think you may have to keep him calm.”

I laugh. “Tell me about it.”

The doctor looks back at me. “How much longer do you have before your nursing program is complete?”

“I’ll finish in the Spring.”

“Okay, so you’ll finish up a couple of months before the babies are due. You’ll need to drink lots of water since you’re going to be up so much. Be careful what you come into contact with and be prepared, twins sometimes come early. Other than that, I suggest making an appointment soon with your regular OBGYN.”

I smile and nod. “Yes
, sir. I had planned to do that soon.”

He reaches out to shake our hands. “It was nice meeting you
, Ms. Garret, Mr. Hughes. Best wishes and good luck. The nurse will be in here momentarily to help you get checked out.”

After the doctor walks out of the room
, we look at each other. I’m the first one to speak. “Wow.”

“Yeah. Wow.”

“There is no way I was expecting that.”

“Twins must run somewhere in your family. It comes from the mom’s side.” Judd shrugs.

“Yeah, must be, but I’m not asking my family. I do need to talk to Vic and Chris, though.”

The nurse comes in and gives me my release papers.

On the way back to the farm, he looks over at me. We are trying to decide how to tell everyone and how his parents are going to react. He grins and looks over at me. “Okay, why don’t we plan a dinner at our house? We could invite your brothers, their girlfriends, along with the rest of our family. I think Nana would be thrilled that we chose to share the news that way.”

It hits me he said our house. “Judd
, as great as that sounds, are you sure about all of this? I mean, I’m caught off guard by it, but that’s your house. Nana left it to you.”

He pulls off to the side of the road and turns to me. “Baby
, that house became ours the minute they said Nana left it to me. I was going to ask you to move in anyway, these babies just make it harder for you to tell me no.”

“Hey
, I mean it sounds great, but I’m just scared I guess. This is a huge step for anyone, but add two babies on top of that and it’s a little crazy.”

He kisses my hands. “I know.
Just think about it, though, we’ve never been a normal couple. We had mind blowing sex within two hours of meeting each other. My point is we don’t do normal.” He pulls back on the road. “Plus, Nana always said that normal was for uptight assholes.”

I burst out laughing. “Okay
, we’ll plan the dinner, but let’s tell everyone it’s a housewarming dinner. Okay?”

He nods. “Sounds good.”

“Oh, don’t tell Scar you took me to the hospital, she’ll be pissed I didn’t call her. Plus, I want to keep the twin thing a surprise.”

He smirks. “Got it.”

Once we start down the gravel drive, he looks at me. “Do you want to go ahead and pack up some of your things and bring them over?”

“I’ll just grab a few clothes and girl stuff. We need to get the house like you want it and get your stuff in there before we start moving stuff in.”

“I guess we could stay in the apartment for a few days until Ryder and I take care of the things I wanted to.”

I nod. “That sounds good. Let’s stop by the house and make some plans.”

We pull up to the house and go inside. I sigh. “Tell me it isn’t always going to be like this, that we won’t always feel this void when we walk in the door here?”

“It may, but when the babies come it will bring a whole new light to this place and Nana would be thrilled.”

I laugh. “Yeah, she would. She’d rub it in my face that she was right. That she knew I was pregnant before I did.”

He laughs. “Yeah
, she would. It amazed me that she always knew everything, even with no one telling her.”

I chuckle. “I know
, right? She’d always tell me she didn’t get that old by being stupid.”

Judd sits on the couch. “I miss her.”

I sit down beside him. “Me, too. I spent so much time with her these past few months, it’s hard, you know? I have to finish her memoirs without her.”

He claps his hands together. “Alright. Let’s not get down, let’s look around and see what you want to do.”

I laugh. “What WE want to do.”

We stand up and walk around
, talking about paint colors, the furniture we want to keep, and which room we want to use for the nursery. Luckily, Nana was pretty on top of staying with the current styles in life. Judd said she also had all of the windows, doors, electrical and plumbing updated a few years ago.

After making our list and seeing how much of it is actually baby related
, I look up at him. “So I guess we should probably plan dinner for this week so we can spill the beans. I mean, you can go ahead and tell Ryder if you want to since Scarlet knows, but don’t say a word about it being twins. I want to surprise her, too.”

He grins. “Sounds like a plan. Yeah
, I need to go ahead and tell him so he’ll know why I’m doing some of the things on this list.”

I nod my head. “Exactly.”

He pulls me close to him. “I love you, Princess. Please don’t ever be scared of me again.”

I shake my head. “I’ll try not to, but you have to do your best to use your control like you
r counselor said.”

He leans down kissing my neck. “You’ve got it.”

Suddenly my hormones go into overdrive and I feel my panties getting wet. I start kissing him back and he works his way down my neck. “Oh, Judd.”

He hoists me up and walks me over to the dining room table
, laying me back. He pulls my pants and panties down, working my shirt off. I snatch my bra off and he palms my breasts. “I think these are already bigger.”

I pant as he puts his mouth on my breasts. “It’s probably just the hormones.” I feel a zing run straight to my clit. “Oh God
, Judd. I need you to fuck me right now.”

He stands up and snatches his shirt off. Shoving his pants and underwear down
, his cock springs free. Grabbing my legs under the knee, he pulls me to the edge of the table. He leans down, licking and sucking on the throbbing nub between my legs. I cry out as he thrusts into me.

He grunts out. “Fuck.” He leans down over me. “I’ve missed all of this
, Princess.”

I look into his eyes. “Me
, too.”

He stands back up and starts thrusting into me faster. Within minutes we are both crying out in ecstasy. He picks me up off the table and we slide onto the floor together
, still wrapped up in each other.

“I can’t lose you
, Princess. Ever.”

Chapter 39

Standing here in what is now my backyard and manning a grill seems strange. The past couple of weeks have given me more ups and downs than all of my deployments rolled into one. Losing my shit at the bar, losing Nana, fighting with Princess, finding out I’m going to be a dad, not once, but twice.

“Hey
, man. This place is coming together great. Nana would be proud.”

I take the beer Ryder hands to me. “Thanks
, man. That means a lot coming from you.”

“So
, when are you going to tell your parents?”

“Tonight at dinner. She wants to tell them and her brothers at the same time.”

He nods and shrugs with his hands in his pockets. “Sounds good.”

“Man
, hearing the heartbeat was the coolest sound ever.”

He puts his hand up. “Wait
, when did you hear the heartbeat? Scarlet said that Annabelle’s first doctor’s appointment is this week.”

“Well
, she had a little dizzy spell the other day after she told me. I made her go to the ER and get checked out.”

“Let me guess
, you didn’t tell Scar.”

I shake my head. “She didn’t want anyone to worry.”

“Oh boy, when Scar figures this out you two are in for it.”

A little while later
, Ryder and I have finished grilling, and Scarlet and Princess are putting everything else on the table.

Once everything is set
, we sit down. I look up at everyone sitting around the table. “Thank y’all for coming tonight.” I reach and grab Princess’s hand. “We hope this is the start of many dinners together.”

Princess smiles and looks around the table. “We had another reason for bringing everyone here tonight. We have a little announcement to make.”

Vic and Chris look up. Vic asks. “Are you guys getting married or something? Because you didn’t have to feed us steak to tell us that.”

Princess laughs. “No. I’m pregnant.”

My mom screams and jumps up, running around the table and hugging us at the same time.

“Oh my God! I’m so happy.”

I put my hand on my mom’s shoulder. “Just hang on, we aren’t through.” I laugh when she looks at me strange. “We decided to double the fun. We’re having twins.”

This time it’s Scarlet’s turn to jump up and knock a chair backwards trying to get to us. She and my mom have us wrapped up very tight.
My dad and all of the rest of the men in the room slap me on the back, while Kari and Angie hug Princess.

“Ladies
, do you mind giving us a little breathing room?”

They laugh and break free from us. Princess laughs. “Now
, let’s eat.”

Scarlet looks up
, glaring at us from the plate she just sat back down to. “Wait a minute. How do you know you’re having twins?”

Princess laughs. “Well
, the other day when I told Judd, I got a little dizzy and kind of passed out. He made me go to the ER and they did an ultrasound. Trust me, we were both very shocked.”

“You didn’t tell me you went to the hospital. Oh missy
, you are in big damn trouble.” Scarlet points with her fork.

My mom looks concerned. “What did the doctor say? Is everything okay with the babies?”

I nod. “Yes, ma’am. It was just a little scare. She was a little dehydrated and stressed from everything that had been going on.”

Chris looks up. “Well
, Prissy Pants, I’m happy for you.”

Vic raises his glass. “Me
, too. I propose a toast. Here’s to the new parents.”

“Here, here. To the new parents.”
Everyone says.

My mom looks at Princess. “So how far along are you
, sweetie?”

“I’m only six weeks today. We wanted to go ahead and tell y’all because we wanted our family to know what’s going on. We just want to wait a little longer before telling everyone else.”

I agree, nodding. “Yes, the doctor said everything looked great, but we just want to be careful. We have our first appointment with her regular OBGYN next week.”

Everyone nods. My dad winks at me. “Son
, you did good.”

Ryder shoots up from his chair. “Wait
, that means you got pregnant sometime around our wedding.” He sits back down and shakes his head.

There’s no way I’m telling him that we are pretty sure it happened in the barn during his reception.

All of the women are talking to Princess about her doctor’s appointment next week.

Ryder Laughs.
“I don’t know why you guys want to go all fancy and get a doctor. Me, Judd and Nelson delivered a lot of babies just a few weeks ago. Even a set of twins. We could do it.”

My mom motions to him. “Not my grandbabies
, Ryder Grayton Abbott.”

Scarlet pops him on the arm as my mom smacks my dad for laughing. Scarlet glares. “That’s not funny, those were cows.”

Ryder laughs. “Yeah, cows worth a lot of money. I say we can do it.”

After Ryder gets scolded a few minutes later
, he finally shuts up.

A little bit later
, after my parents, Scar and Ryder have left, I’m out back talking with Vic and Chris. Chris looks up from his beer. “So, does she plan on telling our parents?”

“Maybe later. I don’t want her to get stressed out this early. Plus
, when she tells them, I’ll be with her. Because if your father even goes near her, I’ll hurt him.”

Vic nods. “We completely understand. That’s actually what we were going to suggest. If Winston hurt her or those babies
, I’d kill him.”

I motion back to him with my beer bottle. “So you are really okay finding out that your dad isn’t really your dad?”

“When your father is Winston Garrett, you are praying you aren’t his kid. Trust me.”

Have you tried to find said business partner?”

He shakes his head. “No. I know who it is and that’s really no better. I’ll talk to him when I get ready. I’m just trying to finish up my residency and go to work.”

Chris sits forward. “You make her happier than we’ve ever seen her.”

“Coming from you guys
, that means a lot. I don’t want you to think I’m never going to marry your sister or anything like that. We’ve just kinda had a lot thrown at us at one time. I actually planned to do it soon, she just kinda threw me for a planning loop when this happened.”

Vic nods. “Hey
, we understand, and putting a ring on someone’s finger isn’t the overall commitment. Look how we grew up. I’m fucking twenty-eight years old. I just found out that the man who belittled me, who called me a failure for going to medical school instead of being like him, a blood sucking vulture, isn’t my father. Actually, I couldn’t be happier to know I’m not blood related to that man.”

Chris smiles at me. “
My brother is still working through some things. You just take care of Prissy Pants, be true to her and make her happy. That’s all the commitment we need.”

“Thanks
, guys. I plan to.”
