He collapsed onto her, his flesh filling her and hers hugging him, their hearts pulsing blood throughout their joined bodies.

“I love you.” His voice was rough and his breath was as erratic as hers. “So much. I’m glad you came back.”

“I’m glad you wanted me back,” she said as he kissed her mouth, again and again.

“I’ll always want you. Always love you.”

“I’ll always love you.”

He put his mouth against her chest and dropped kisses here and there on the flushed skin that covered her heart. “I know. I see it in your heart. I feel it in mine. And that’s all the proof I’ll ever need.”

“Which drawers are mine, darlin’?” Sean asked as Kristin walked into their bedroom. He held a stack of T-shirts in one hand and a stack of boxers in the other.

They had semi-shared her apartment since getting back together in March. He couldn’t move out of the dorm until the end of the semester because he had RA obligations. But now, here in mid-May, he was moving in with her completely. They had a couple of days to themselves before his archaeology field school started.

“The bottom three are yours; the top two are mine.”

“No way two drawers are enough for all your clothes,” he said, putting his things away.

She crawled on the bed to watch him unpack. “Well, I
am
taking the closet.”

He smiled. “Of course.”

“I have a lot of clothes and shoes.”

“I noticed.” He grabbed balls of socks from his suitcase and tossed them into the drawer with his boxers.

“You like me to look good, don’t you?”

“Darlin’, it’s not the clothes that make you look good.” He put jeans and sweats in the third drawer.

“You’re just saying that because you prefer me naked all the time.”

He looked back to her. She had stretched out on the bed and lay with one arm flung back beside her head on the pillow, the other low across her stomach. Her legs were spread slightly, knees bent with one up and the other out to the side. Her breasts thrust high in her tight T-shirt, showing her hard nipples, and her short shorts left little to the imagination.

The day they got back together, they went together to be tested for STDs. Both received a clean record, and she got back on birth control pills, so they had quickly dispensed with condoms. He was glad. There was nothing better than being flesh to flesh with her.

“I’d keep you naked day and night if you’d agree to it. I love your body so much.”

“Show me.”

He pushed the suitcase from the bed and it crashed to the floor. The mattress dipped under his weight when he joined her and lay on top of her. Taking a wrist in each hand, he brought her arms high above her head.

She ran her tongue across her lips, tempting him, and her eyes went heavy. He dipped his mouth closer to hers for a kiss, and she rose up to meet him, but he pulled back, teasing her. He dipped in again and, when she didn’t move toward him, he brushed his mouth over hers, giving her a taste of what was to come.

“You like to torture me, don’t you?” she whispered and licked his lips before he could pull away.

“Torture?” he said and gave her a little grin. “Darlin’, this is called pleasuring.” She opened her mouth to protest and he pressed his mouth to hers, taking her breath, giving her what she wanted.

Small moans rolling in her throat had him pulling back from her again and moving down to kiss along her jaw, lower to her neck, across her chest and between her breasts. Without giving her time to prepare for what was coming next, his mouth came down on her nipple and sucked her through her shirt.

She moaned and arched up into him, wanting more. “The other one, too,” she begged. His mouth left her breasts and shifted down to the bare skin of her stomach. His tongue dipped into her navel and grazed the sensitive skin just under the band of her low-rise shorts.

“Lower,” she said, and he released her wrists so he could unfasten her shorts. But she beat him to it, unfastening them and pushing them down so he could go lower. Her hands yanked off her shirt, baring her breasts to his eyes, hands, and mouth.

It filled him with love to know she desired him that much. “I think you’re glad I’m here,” he said and let his tongue lave the flesh she had bared. It turned him on that she watched him taste her and made him want to give her even more, to give her everything she wanted.

“I am. So glad.” Gasping as he nibbled down her stomach to her mound, she thrust her pelvis at him, urging him on. “No one has ever made me feel the way you do.”

“And no one ever will. I’m your last lover, Kristin.”

He gripped the sides of her shorts and pulled them off, panties included. Burying his face in her pussy, he drew the eternity symbol on her clit with his tongue, over and over, before plunging deep into her pussy. Her hips thrust against his mouth. She wanted him inside her. He wanted inside her.

“Get naked with me.” The words crawled from her mouth, low and urgent, and he knew she wanted him as much as he wanted her.

He sat up on his knees and she followed, pulling off his T-shirt and his boxers until he was as naked as she was. She trailed her fingers down his chest, his stomach, and into the nest of black curls at his crotch.

One touch of her hands to his hard rod sent a bolt of desire through him, hardening him even more. Then she took him in her mouth and his entire body sizzled. He caressed her head as she licked him, sucked him, teased his rigid flesh, letting her know how much she pleased him. Her movements drew rumbled moans of pleasure from his mouth that he barely recognized as his, and he had to have her now.

He eased her up onto her knees and lifted her until she sat on his lap. Anchoring her legs around his hips, she guided him to her hot spot, and he slid in. The overwhelming feeling of being sheathed so fully in her love hit him as it always did, and he felt himself giving everything over to her. She wanted all of him, and he wanted to give her all of him.

His ever-present concern over not hurting her in place, he started slowly, plunging himself into her an inch at a time until she was slick and hot enough to take all of him and was grinding against him. She grabbed his back and pulled him closer to her.

“Don’t be easy with me. I want all of you inside me.”

Taking her word, he grabbed her ass with his hands, his fingers digging into her flesh, and held her still while he pounded in to her, hard and deep. His eyes were hard on hers, drunk with the smell and sounds of their fucking. He hit the tip of her cervix, then pulled out again, thrusting, withdrawing, plunging, withdrawing, fast, hard, again and again, until he felt like he was losing his mind from the heat and pleasure and desire washing over him.

She let her head fall back, as if she were luxuriating in the feeling of him so deep inside her. She needed him. She needed his cock. Hard and fast.

“Oh, God, Sean! Fuck me!”

“Fuck you like this?” His voice was rough, seething as he rammed into her.

Her hips lifted against his assault. “Yes! Yes!”

Their bodies rocked hard into each other, “You want my cock in your sweet pussy all the time.”

“Yessss! All the time.”

His voice, her voice, his words, her words, his movements, hers, their love fused into one giant incendiary device that was set to explode.

“Ohhh, fuck, Sean, Ahhhh! Yes!” she moaned, thrashing against him, quivering from the heat and force, and biting his lip until he tasted his blood. It was as if the explosion sent her into the air in a million fragments, all filled with hot pleasure.

He forced himself harder into her, now, throat growling, hips grinding, cock jamming, grunting with every breath. So fast, so fast. So fucking good.

“Come inside me, Sean. I want your cum.”

Her words, her voice, the feel of her got him to the top and he jumped. His arms held her so tight she couldn’t breathe, and his cock impaled her to the hilt.

“Arhhhh, Fuck me, Kristin, Fuck. My Kristin!”

He felt his cum, hot and pulsing, hit the top of her pussy, again and again as he found his release in her body.

They collapsed onto the bed, still holding each other, panting, groaning at the strength of their release, feeling ripped apart by it.

When she’d found a breath, she used it to whisper sweet words that left no doubt that what they had was real and precious, even though they both knew it had a time/date stamp on it that could expire come August.

“You’re my world, Sean.”

He sighed against her and nodded in agreement. “And you’re mine, darlin’.”

The summer flew by on eagle’s wings. Kristin and Sean grasped every moment they had together, held them tightly in their hands. Time stood still for a few precious moments when they made love, but it wasn’t enough to stop time completely. July was already half over. She refused to dwell on it, to ruin the present by dreading the future. But the future was galloping toward them.

She slid the veggies, cheese slices, and chopped green chile into the fridge. By the time Sean got home, he could fire up the grill for the burgers. She laughed at herself and the surge of domesticity that had taken them both over. She got up in the morning with Sean and showered with him. He made their breakfast, and she sent him off with a packed lunch made with love. She had dinner going when he got home from the field school, and he cleaned up afterward.

He was her world, and she was his, and that was enough.

During the day, she plowed through her thesis. She wanted her evenings and nights free for him. Their time together was moving fast, and she didn’t want to be tied to her computer or to the library when she could be tied, so to speak, to him.

She glanced up at the clock in the kitchen. He was due home any minute now. Excitement surged through her, making her stomach twitter and her heart patter. How was it possible that she loved him more today than she did yesterday? But she did.

Her heart sped up when she heard a knock on the door. Forget his key again? She rushed to the door, a smile on her face.

“Forget your key a—”

Her joy vanished with the rest of her sentence. Her heart jumped to her throat, and her head begin to throb behind her eyes.

“Hi, Kristin.”

Chapter Twenty

The lump Kristin swallowed tasted bitter. “Zoe.”

“At least you remember my name.” Zoe chuckled, a thin sound that slipped from her mouth almost as an afterthought.

“What do you want?” Kristin asked.

Zoe shrugged one shoulder, giving that sorry little-girl look. “To talk. And apologize.”

“I’m not interested in either.” Kristin shut the door, but Zoe grabbed it before it closed.

“Please, Kristin. I’m seeing a therapist for my…issues. She said I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself and move on until I asked for forgiveness from the people I hurt.”

“What if those people aren’t able to forgive you?”

“All I can do is ask. I can’t control whether you accept it or not.”

Though Kristin had doubts that Zoe could transform herself on the inside, there was no question she had transformed on the outside in the four or so months since she’d seen her. Her normally wild hair was tamed into a sleek ponytail. Her makeup was natural and toned-down. She wore jean capris and a T-shirt, instead of ass-bearing skirts and chest-revealing spaghetti-strap tops. Her tone was even different—softer, less abrasive, and less demanding.

“It’ll just take a few minutes. Please?”

After a pause, Kristin stepped back and opened the door.

Zoe smiled sweetly and stepped inside, glancing around. “Nice place. I always wondered what these apartments looked like inside. One bedroom?”

“Have a seat.” Kristin sat on the chair and pointed to the couch.

Zoe sat, perching on the edge of the cushion instead of climbing on and tucking her legs under her, like she used to do.

The two former friends/roommates/lovers stared at each other for a long moment. Kristin wondered whether Zoe was reliving memories of another time.

“Never thought of you as the ‘apron’ type. It’s cute.”

Kristen felt her cheeks heat, wishing she’d thought to take off the domestic goddess costume before answering the door. “I’m cooking dinner.”

“Is that why your face is red?”

Kristin heard the teasing in Zoe’s voice, but she wasn’t moved to play along. “I don’t want to chat. Say what you have to say, and then go.” Kristin recognized the pout on Zoe’s lips, but without the garish pink gloss she used to favor, the action looked more remorseful than huffy.

Zoe dropped her eyes to her hands in her lap. She swallowed then met Kristin’s eyes.

“I’m sorry for the way I treated Sean, Mason, and Randy, and especially you. Your friendship was everything to me, and I treated it like it was nothing. I betrayed your trust, and I hurt you. I don’t know if you can—and I wouldn’t blame you if you can’t—but I’m asking you to please forgive me.”

Zoe’s eyes were shiny with tears, and her voice trembled with the emotion behind the words. Kristin felt her heart thaw a degree or two for her former friend for at least having the courage to come here and face her with her wrong-doings.

“I forgive you.” She tried to keep her voice neutral, but she heard the frost on the words. She had said the words, meant them, but there was still a lot of emotion tied up in what Zoe had done to her and Sean…and Randy and Mason, for that matter. She was forgiving her so she could forget her.

Zoe’s body released a sigh. “Thank you. You don’t know what this means to me.”

“Let me tell you what it means and what it doesn’t mean. Just so that we’re on the same page.”

Zoe nodded at Kristin’s crispness, wiping tears from her eyes with her fingers. Gone were the long, painted talons.

“It means I forgive you for what you did because I don’t want to give it any power to affect me or my life.” Kristin felt thick bands squeezing her body as she talked about this with Zoe. A hot pressure throbbed at her temples and in her stomach. But she pushed forward, knowing it would help to bring closure to it. “It means I’ve moved past what happened and have no unfinished business with you. It doesn’t mean we are friends or ever will be friends—or anything else. Are you clear on that?”
