However, though many of the folks from Shadowfen left, many of them remained, more than half, actually, including Skye and Brady, to my extreme elation. And then a strange thing started happening. The small pack, as it now was, immediately started growing. Steven Ashcrest, a dragon shifter and a member of the royal family from the city of the same name, came to the village, asking if he might stay and help protect the townsfolk in the surrounding areas from the wolves. He'd left Ashcrest a year or so earlier, no one really knew why, and he hadn't had a permanent home since. Chase said he'd love to have Steven on board as a protector.           

Then, a half-dozen bear shifters and their wives and children arrived the next day, after their bear shifter clan had kicked them out when they'd refused to take part in attacking and looting a town. They wanted to know if Chase would take them on as part of his pack in exchange for their help in battling the enemy wolves. Chase didn't even have to think about it before saying yes.

Not two days after the bears had arrived, two young women from the distant village the bears' former clan had raided arrived, injured and half-starved. They'd somehow managed to escape their village during the attack while everyone else had perished, and someone along the way had told them that they might find safe haven in Shadowfen. Chase told them they were more than welcome to stay for as long as they liked.

I had a feeling that with all the single wolf shifters still remaining in Shadowfen, the two young women might eventually find their own mates for life.

After all the new arrivals had arrived, the population of the village had actually increased. With all the women now present, Chase and I had no shortage of babysitters when our baby boy, who we named Alexander Chase, arrived in December.

Skye and Brady also had no shortage of babysitters when they had a baby girl born the following month. However, all the town babysitters had to fight with Rose for opportunities to get their turn.

With Jack perched on her shoulder, Rose liked to look after the babies as often as she could. Skye and I planned to have our children call her Grandma Rose, which made her turn away for a few moments, lower lip trembling and eyes filling with tears, when we told her this.            

Over the next several years, the enemy wolf attacks definitely didn't stop altogether, but they did decrease, to the point that everyone felt completely safe living in the village. Hunter, Flora, and Lily eventually returned, bringing their new addition to the family, a little boy named Maxwell, with them.

Not long after, I discovered that Chase and I were expecting another baby. I actually less
discovered
this than Rose
told
me about it. "A girl for you this time," she casually said one day while we were weeding a flower garden we'd planted together. As if to confirm my pregnancy, tears began rolling down my cheeks almost instantly.

That evening, I told Chase the news, and he pulled me into his arms, whispering how much he loved me. I whispered it back, my voice thick with emotion and
my heart feeling as if it might soar right out of my chest.
