They stopped talking as the Student Sergeant
Major walked up. “Company…attention!”

In unison, the company snapped to
attention.

Report,” he said.

First Platoon, all present and
accounted for,” the Student First Platoon Sergeant said.

Second Platoon, all present and
accounted for,” the Student Second Platoon Sergeant, Kang,
repeated.

Third Platoon, thirty-eight
present, one unaccounted for.”

Kimberly winced at the sound of one
unaccounted. She saw their pass slipping away.

Fourth Platoon, all present and
accounted for.”

All right, candidates, you know
what this may mean for us,” Kang said. “Everyone but the student
leaders, you’re dismissed.”

Kimberly waited as most of the candidates ran
off before starting her slow walk around the building. She’d apply
more ice once inside.

You better pray we maintain our
pass,” Stevens said, walking beside her. “Too many days of this and
they’ll send you to medical.”

She’s right,” Craig said. “Us
walking with you doesn’t look as bad, but we can’t do it during
regular training hours. Too many cadre watching.”

Kimberly remained silent but knew they were
right. She hoped they’d at least have base liberty. Most candidates
would be gone and she could rest in her room.

Back on their floor, she filled her bag with
ice and propped her foot up on the bed. Her bunk wasn’t anywhere as
comfortable as the hotel bed, but she was thankful to be on the
bottom.

Stevens put on her headset and got in the bed
next to Kimberly’s, and Craig was up on the top bunk.

So what do you think about your
admirer?” Craig leaned her head down so Kimberly could see her
face.

Kimberly playfully shoed her away. “I think
he’s a nice guy.”

Oh, so you must not be into white
guys. I’m not either, but he’s hot.”

How are you not into white guys
when you’re white?” Kimberly arched her eyebrow.

What? I’ve never been attracted
to one. They don’t seem to be attracted to me either. In high
school, only black guys asked me out.”

Get back up on your bed before
all the blood rushes to your head. You’ll get light headed and fall
off you’ll be back at HHC.”

Craig pulled herself back in her bed. “You
still didn’t answer my question.”

I don’t have a problem with
dating a white guy.” It wasn’t something she thought about. She
dated who she thought was nice and asked her out. The issue was she
never spent time with a white man before now.

Good, so if I get him to come out
to eat with the group tomorrow, you’re coming, right?”

Kimberly looked up at the top bunk and rolled
her eyes at the top bunk. She knew Craig couldn’t see her. If her
foot wasn’t hurting, she’d give her a swift kick. No way did she
want to be around a group of people off post with Carlson. It’s
hard enough standing next to him in formation earlier without being
able to reach out and touch him. She was fooling herself when she
thought it would be a onetime thing. The smile he gave her
confirmed it.

I’m waiting,” Craig
said.

I’ll think about it.”

As long as you’re thinking ends
with a yes.”

I’m going to bed.” She faked a
yawn.

Good night, Woodson.” Craig flung
a pillow at Stevens. When she looked up, Craig said, “We’re going
to bed. Can you please turn off the light?”

Kimberly closed her eyes and drifted off to
sleep. Occasional laughter and candidates snoring down the hall
made for a fitful sleep. She hated the stupid rule of them having
to leave the door open unless they were changing. Nighttime should
be an exception as well.

Morning came sooner than she preferred. The
bag of ice had melted, and her foot was stiff, but at least it
didn’t hurt as bad. Kimberly eased out the bed. She and her
roommates got dressed and made their way downstairs for
formation.

When the Student Commander addressed them
instead of the Student Sergeant Major, she braced herself for bad
news. Hopes of relaxing in the hotel bed flew out the window. She’d
booked the room for the entire weekend and would have to call them
after formation to check out.

Yesterday, it was mentioned that
one student was missing. This was true, but it was my failure as a
leader to disseminate the message. Candidate White is on his way
back. He was at home for the birth of his son. Please congratulate
him upon his return and enjoy your pass.”

Upon dismissal, Kimberly stood there. She must
have misunderstood. They let a candidate go home?

I guess they do have hearts,”
Carlson said.

Kimberly watched as the other candidates
sprinted towards the building.

How do you plan on spending your
pass?” she asked.

I think I want to go relax.” He
gave her a sly grin.

I was thinking the same thing.”
She smiled and started walking off.

Hold up, Woodson,” Kang said,
stopping her. “You’re the new Fourth Squad Leader. Here’s a list of
phone numbers for everyone in our platoon. From now on, if we have
any changes, we’ll text them. I hate having all these formations
for no reason.” He handed her the list and walked off.

Thanks. I think.”

Everyone had to fill a leadership role at some
point within the class. She was glad to get it out the way now and
hoped she didn’t get picked for something like Student Sergeant
Major or Commander later on.

She made her way back to her room. Stevens was
already gone, but Craig was still there.

Are you going to meet up with us
or not?”

I’m not sure. Where’re you going
to eat?” Kimberly said while grabbing her belongings.

A Japanese steakhouse. I’ll text
you the address when I get it.”

Okay.”

Kimberly called herself a cab as she headed
out the door. She smiled when she saw Carlson getting into one too.
The thought of being in his arms again were with her as she
rode.

Chapter Ten

Jonathan could hardly contain himself when he
saw Woodson stepping out of the cab in front of his. His plan was
to beat her to the hotel but made a detour to the drug store to
pick up some protection. He paid the driver and rushed out of the
car to catch up with Woodson.

Drill Sergeant Carlson!” a blonde
woman called when he made it in the lobby.

He stopped in his tracks.

Drill Sergeant, it’s Misty
Jones.”

He gave her a blank stare.

Private Jones, Drill Sergeant.”
She flipped her hair away from her face and pushed his
arm.

Private Jones, what are you doing
here?” His memory returned. She was in his second to last platoon
as a drill sergeant. Females like her were the reason he’d taken
his Sergeant Major’s advice and left Fort Sam Houston. He was used
to females making passes at him, but she went too far.

While working staff duty, he’d come back to
his office from making his rounds.

What the heck are you doing?”
Jones was half-dressed sitting on his desk.

I have something for
you.”

He turned his head away. “You don’t have
anything I want. Put your clothes on and get out.”

She came towards him and he backed away. “It’s
what I want.”

Get out before I throw you out.”
He remained calm but was direct.

A look of embarrassment crossed her face. She
buttoned up her clothes and ran out.

He avoided her the rest of her time there. He
was on pins and needles until she graduated.

I’m in Airborne School. It’s
across the road from OCS.”

Yes, I know where the school is.
I’m Airborne myself. Many years ago.” Speaking to her made him
nervous.

My offer still stands, you know.
I’m no longer a trainee. I’d gladly join you in your room.” She
reached out to hold his hand.

He snatched away. “Private Jones. You’re a
beautiful young lady, but I have no interest in you. I’m sure there
are other young men, your age, who’d be more than happy to
entertain you.”

Jonathan left her standing in the lobby and
got on the elevator. The numbers counting up to his floor seemed to
move in slow motion. When he heard the ding, he stepped out before
the doors opened all the way.

Stopping in front of Woodson’s door, he had to
calm himself. He’d run down the hall to her room. His breathing
slowed as he tapped on the door.

A smile awaited him on the other side. “Hey,
you.”

Hey.” He stepped inside, and she
closed the door behind him.

I was about to take a bath. You
want to join me?” She walked toward the bathroom, undressing as she
went. Inside in the bathroom, she tossed out her final garment for
him to see.

She didn’t have to ask twice. He followed
suit, leaving a trail of clothing behind him, and joined her in the
tub. The water was just how he liked it—hot but not enough to sting
his skin. He slid in behind her and pulled her close.

What are you doing to me,
woman?”

Relaxing you.” She rubbed her
hands up and down his thighs.

Jonathan closed his eyes, enjoying her body,
the orange-tangerine scent of the bubbles, and the hot water. It
had been a long time since he’d sat in a tub. If Woodson was part
of the deal, he’d do it often.

Craig wants me to go eat with the
group,” she said.

She asked me too.”

We do have to eat, but I’m
thinking room service will do.” She raised her hand out the water
and grabbed the back of his head.

He kissed her neck and ran his fingers through
her hair. “I have a question.”

Ask away.”

You don’t mind getting your hair
wet? Some of the other…um…black females were upset after water
survival about it.” The question sounded innocent in his head, but
Jonathan said it out loud he felt embarrassed.

She laughed. “Our hair typically doesn’t act
right when wet. It won’t simply smooth back into a ponytail.
There’s a natural curl to our hair. It grows up and outward not
down. Relaxers to straighten it help, but once wet, it doesn’t
matter if you have a relaxer or not. Mine is in micro braids. The
braids keep it together, so no, I really don’t care about getting
my hair wet.”

Oh, I wasn’t quit expecting all
of that.”

I’m used to questions about my
hair. It’s no big deal.” She turned her head and took his lips in
hers.

His manhood rose. He adjusted so it wouldn’t
poke her in the back. She readjusted, rolling her butt against its
stiffness. Their kiss deepened. Woodson maneuvered her hand back
and stroked his shaft. Her touch excited him. His hands found their
way to her mound, and he started rubbing her clit.

I need to feel you,” she said.
She lifted her body and came down on his manhood.

He thought about the condoms, but being inside
her he no longer cared.

The tightness of her walls gripped him. She
pumped slowly until her body loosened up, allowing him all the way
inside. Jonathan toyed with her titties as he worked her from
behind. When he went fast, the water splashed out the tub. He took
his time.

He wanted her, now more than ever.

Let’s get out,” he
said.

Woodson balanced on the tub and rose up. He
stepped out and carried her to a chair. She bent over it, giving
him a full view of her womanhood. It called out for him to taste.
He licked her from behind. His tongue danced on her bud and
massaged her inner walls.

Woodson held on to the back of the chair for
balance. “You make it feel so good.”

She rolled her hips on his face. Her body
tensed. He’d found the spot. His tongue moved faster and harder
until he felt an explosion of her juices.

I need you inside me,” she
whispered.

The feeling was mutual. Placing a hand around
her waist, he slid inside her. Her warms juices covered his
manhood. He had to gain his composure as the sensation almost made
him release. Jonathan started with slow deep strokes, building up
momentum until he was back in control.

Is this what you wanted?” he
asked.

Yes, oh yes.”

With each thrust, he went in further. He
wrapped his fingers through her hair, pulling her into him. The
room filled with her moans and his grunts. She looked over her
shoulder at him. The sight of her beauty was more than he could
take. He released inside of her.
