**MANNI (SEEKING FOLK)

The Manni are one of MID-WORLD’s strange religious sects. Their worship seems to center, at least in part, on traveling between worlds. Roland suspects that his old teacher CORT held palaver with these people (a tribe of them once lived outside GILEAD) since he seemed to know something about jumping the time/space continuum. ELDRED JONAS also knew about Manni beliefs.

In the 2003 version of
The Gunslinger,
we learn that Manni holy men can achieve a clinical detachment from their own bodies, attaining a complete division between the mind/spirit and the physical self. They can even watch their bodies die without becoming emotionally upset. Also in the new
Gunslinger,
we learn that a tribe of Manni-folk lived in the dens to the north of the MOHAINE DESERT. BROWN, the BORDER DWELLER who lived on the edge of the Mohaine, married a Manni woman and lived among them for a while. Although he left their settlement, he still retained their habit of using “thee” and “thou” in his speech.

The first time we see the Manni of MANNI REDPATH, their village located north of CALLA BRYN STURGIS, they are crammed into a buckboard wagon drawn by a pair of MUTIE GELDINGS. Although in appearance they resemble both the Quakers and the Amish found in the America of our world, the Manni are not actually Christian. Their religion, which worships an entity called both THE FORCE and THE OVER, focuses on traveling between worlds via TODASH.

To induce the necessary state of mind to travel
todash,
the Manni use both magnets and plumb bobs, which they store in large boxes, called coffs. The coffs are covered in moons, stars, and odd geometric shapes. The largest and most powerful of the bobs is called the BRANNI BOB. This plumb bob is so powerful that it is used only by HENCHICK, the Manni
dinh.
As you might expect, Manni magic is extremely powerful. The Manni help Roland’s
ka-tet
open the
UNFOUND DOOR after MIA, SUSANNAH DEAN’s demon possessor, leaves Mid-World, taking BLACK THIRTEEN—and Susannah’s body—with her.

Manni men are easily recognized. They wear dark blue cloaks and round-crowned hats, and they use the terms
thee
and
thou.
Manni men also have extremely long fingernails, since they are allowed to cut them only twice a year. Not only does their appearance set them apart from the other people of Mid-World, but the Seeking Folk’s culture is also radically different from that of their neighbors. Manni men marry multiple wives and live in cabins called
kras.
Those who leave their clan to marry outsiders (such as MARGARET EISENHART) are called the forgetful. As far as their former brethren are concerned, these deserters are damned and will spend eternity in the depths of NA’AR, which is like Hell.

When the name of ARTHUR ELD is mentioned, the Manni whisper, “The Eld!” and lift their hands, raising their first and fourth fingers in the air. The movement is a sign of respect. When a Manni covers his eyes with his hands, it is a signal of deep religious dread. When Manni folk shake their heads in negation, they do so slowly, sweeping their heads back and forth in wide arcs. The gesture is so common among them that Roland thinks it might well be genetic. As well as having their own philosophy, the Manni have their own poetic tradition. The lines “Beyond the realm of human range/ A drop of hell, a touch of strange” come from a Manni poem.

BRANNI BOB:
The Branni Bob is the largest and most potent of the magical plumb bobs that the Manni used to travel TODASH. It is kept in a four-foot-long ironwood coff, is about eighteen inches long, and looks a bit like a child’s top, though it is made of a yellowish, greasy-looking wood. As EDDIE DEAN finds out, it is extremely powerful and becomes
dim
as it sways back and forth. The Branni Bob appears to have a will of its own. Perhaps this is why HENCHICK refers to it as a “he” rather than an “it.” VI:28–43

CANTAB:
When Roland asks FATHER CALLAHAN for the names of some adults that the children of the Calla trust implicitly, Callahan mentions Cantab of the Manni. Evidently, the children follow him as if he
were the Pied Piper. Cantab and his wife, ARRA, are two of the CHILD-MINDERS during the final battle against the WOLVES. Cantab is also present when the Manni help Roland and the remains of his

of Manni Redpath. He is about eighty years old but is in marvelous physical shape, as Roland discovers when Henchick leads him up the steep incline to the DOORWAY CAVE. (Roland is fatigued by the exertion, but Henchick barely breaks a sweat.)

Like the other Manni, Henchick has multiple wives. (He has three.) MARGARET EISENHART (formerly Margaret of the Redpath clan) is either one of his daughters or one of his granddaughters. Bad blood still exists between them because Henchick opposed Margaret’s marriage to a “heathen.” Despite Margaret’s having been with her husband, VAUGHN EISENHART, for more than twenty years, Henchick still believes she is destined for NA’AR.

In the end, Henchick proves to be one of Roland’s greatest allies in CALLA BRYN STURGIS. He and his
ka-tet
help Roland, EDDIE, JAKE, and PERE CALLAHAN open the UNFOUND DOOR so that they can rescue SUSANNAH from the FEDIC DOGAN where MIA has escaped with her body.
