Snarling, he glared at her with his one good eye. “You
whore
,” He rasped in agonized fury, “You fucking
cunt
!”

Angeline only glared at him, her entire body trembling as she raised the bloodied knife above her head. Without hesitation, she brought it down right between his eyes. Tirion, son of Lucius, whined long and low before the hateful light in his gaze winked out forever.

For a moment, there was silence in the clearing. Angeline stared at the blade buried in the skull of her tormenter and retched, turning from the body as her stomach heaved. She emptied its contents before wiping her mouth shakily. Her formerly pristine t-shirt was splattered with wolf blood, and she was white with fear, but to Clyde, she had never been more beautiful.

Stumbling, she rushed over to him, dropping to her knees. Her hands shook as she touched his muzzle, her hands moving over his dark fur. “Oh Christ, Clyde…Clyde we need to get you home.”

He knew he was injured badly. However, any desire to take in the extent of his wounds fled at the panicked look an Angeline’s face. When she raised her hands again, they were covered with blood. “Jesus…Clyde…It’s…it’s going to be alright. I promise. I’ll find someone to help.”

It was going to be alright. Tirion had died before he’d called for help and even if more Reef pack wolves arrived, the loss of their leader would confuse them. They’d turn on one another and tear themselves apart, and as they did, Clyde’s fellows would be spiriting Lex and Angeline to safety.

They would be fine. His sons would live long and fruitful lives.

Clyde coughed, blood and foam covering his muzzle. “
No.”

Angeline sobbed, shaking her head. “No, no, no. Please, stay with me Clyde. Don’t go.”

Her dirty, blood-streaked, breathtaking features gradually blurred into the early morning light, and Clyde knew he could rest easy, having finally found his salvation.

Angeline went through the motions of her day running the gauntlet of emotions. She fed Ian before leading him to the care cabin where Selina would take over for the day. She helped Alicia speak to women who would soon give birth without the comfort of their mates. Five males had been killed when they’d ventured into Reef Pack territory, and it seemed there was no shortage of grieving human women. She helped Elias with his studies and did her best to keep up appearances, even as she crumbled inside.

Every day ended in the same day, with her at Clyde’s bedside in the hospital, clinging to his hand as tears coursed down her face. He was alive, but only just. In the hospital bed three down from his, his brother and Alpha growled at anyone who came near as his injuries slowly healed, staring over at Clyde’s still form for half of his waking hours.

Liara had done all she could. The internal damage had been breathtaking – bleeding, damaged organs and several ribs in pieces. She’d gone three days to stop Clyde from slipping away, only to announce gravely that he might never awake. The trauma to his body had been too great.

And so Angeline sat at his bedside, clinging to him, knowing that he couldn’t linger forever.

“He was supposed to be Alpha.”

At Lex’s gruff voice, her head jerked up and she glanced over the heads of other patients to meet the Alpha’s sorrowful silver gaze.

“When he came of age, our father practically demanded it. I was the brash one. The idiot. Impulsive, stupid and loud-mouthed. Clyde was always wise, always curious – he should have led this pack.” He shook his head slowly. “I wasn’t strong enough to protect my clan or my brother.”

“You did all you could.” Angeline found herself whispering lowly. “If Clyde didn’t want to be Alpha, Lex, he had his reasons. He knew you could be things he couldn’t…make decisions he wouldn’t…” She trailed off, her breath hitching as turned her gaze back to her mate’s lax face.

What would she do once he’d gone? What would she tell Ian and Elias? They’d lost their mother less than two years ago. To lose their father as well…

“Clyde…” her voice shook as she pleaded with him, “Clyde, come back to me. Please.” She lifted his hand between her own, pressing it to her chest. “
Fight
. For your sons. For your Alpha…” She took a shuddering breath. “For our
pup.”

Liara had given her the news a scant week after their return  from Tennessee. Her fatigue, nausea and irritability, it turned out, stemmed from something even more precipitous than her mate’s condition. She was pregnant, pregnant with a child that might never meet its father.

Pressing her lips together, Angeline bent forward to rest her head against his chest, as she had countless times when they’d slept. His heart still beat there, and she closed her eyes to listen to it, wanting to capture the moment and cling to it.

“…Angeline.”

She stiffened as a barely audible word reached her.

Sitting up, she stared down at Clyde’s form, her heart in her throat. When she spoke, her voice trembled so badly it startled the patient in the bed on her opposite side. “…Clyde?”

Silver eyes opened the barest crack, and for the first time in weeks, she met the gaze of the man she loved. His chest heaved with the effort of speaking a single word. “
Angeline
.”

A low cry escaped the woman that summoned Liara immediately. The elder woman quickly checked Clyde’s vital signs, her eyes growing wider and wider, even as his own silver gaze followed her motions in increments.

Christ.”
The word escaped her on a low exhalation as she gazed back at Angeline, and then to Lex’s anxious face. “He’s coming back.”

“Clyde?” For Angeline, the world around them ceased to exist at that moment. Leaning down, she cupped her mate’s face in her unsteady hands, her throat clogged with tears. “Can you hear me? We’re going to have a pup. A
pup
, Clyde.”

A low rumble of approval emitted from his chest as his fingers found hers, closing over them. When he spoke, his soft words were the sweetest Angeline had ever known. “Your…your mother was right. It was you. Always you.”

Madeline had been right. It turned out that Angeline hadn’t known had bad she’d needed an Alpha in her life until she’d been shown the way.
