She waved to him, and Jovian waved
back, thinking how queer the action was, but it made him smile. As
he smiled he realized that her eyes were amber, like his sister’s.
The moment he realized that, the woman vanished.

“It is not your time,” Aramaiti said.
“Stand still, do not enter your Darkest Hour, for it is not yet
that time for you. This is just the darkening of another storm, one
that I like to call knowledge, for with every glimpse of knowledge
that comes, we all go through the darkness of the
unbeliever.”

“But I am dead,” Jovian cried out
looking back at his body as it was hefted onto the
litter.

“For now,” Aramaiti said. “For now,
Jovian Neferis, but soon you will be reborn and shed your past
delusions.” The words rang in his memory … what Aramaiti said was
so similar to what Porillon said that Jovian could only stand in
shock.

As the group headed out with his body
in tow, Jovian was forced to follow. He looked back once and asked
the Aramaiti a question—the last question he would ever ask her
under such false pretenses.

“Where am I going?”

“You are headed into Whitewood Haven,
into the next leg of your journey and into the next chapter of your
life.”
