Devin was hard working and had dreams. Fed Ex paid decent, but he wanted more. He had dreams of owning a bookstore/poetry café. A place where blacks could find their favorite author and also be able to come enjoy everything from an espresso to their favorite liquor. Enjoy all types of desserts from cheesecake to sweet potato pie while they listen to jazz or poetry readings. A simple, yet strong man with ideas and goals—not to mention being fine.

Lisa was momentarily startled when her phone rang. She was deep into her reading. She looked at the number and noticed it was Terrance. “Hello,” she answered.

“Hey, it’s me,” Terrance said. He automatically assumed that Lisa wasn’t seeing anyone and that showed with the ‘it’s me’ as if no other male would be calling.

“Oh, hi T. I was going to call you, but it’s late and…you know.”

“I’m out rolling. I leave tomorrow for a week and a half road trip and I was wondering if I could swing by and check out the apartment.”

“It’s a little late, isn’t it?”

“Yeah, but it’ll only be a minute. I—” His cell beeped. He had another call. When he looked at the face he saw his fiancée’s name. He wanted to curse but held it back. He loved his Brittney but wanted to see Lisa—alone and not with Shay around.

“Can I hit you back?” he asked.

Lisa knew what time it was and was a little hurt. But then she thought about the man that was in her life. The man who was helping her get over Terrance, Slim and any other men that were before him.

In an even tone she said, “Talk to you later, T.”

She pulled the sheets over her goose bump covered torso and no sooner than she grabbed her novel, her phone rang. She sighed as she dropped the book on the thick pillow. Her feelings were hurt a bit by Terrence putting her on the back burner, so she decided that she was going to tell him that he was going to have to wait until another day. “Hello,” she answered sounding irritated on purpose, but to her surprise, it wasn’t Terrance on the other end calling back, it was Devin.

“Whoa, somebody sounds as if they’re having a bad night,” Devin teased.

She immediately perked up. She didn’t want to give away that she was upset even though he wouldn’t have known it was about Terrence. Devin knew a little about T. She had told him only what he needed to know or rather what she wanted him to know. He definitely didn’t know that the apartments first six months rent and all the furnishings were compliments of Terrance because Lisa wasn’t crazy, and even though it was strictly a friend helping her get on her feet, she knew that a man’s ego wouldn’t have been able to handle that. “I’m okay, just a little tired. Mr. Goldstein had me working my butt off.”

“Is that right? Poor baby,” he joked.

“Shut up,” she laughed. “No, really, remember that case I was telling you about. The one where the young lady from Kentucky got caught up with her boyfriend who was selling drugs.”

“Yeah, I remember, hold on for a second.”

Lisa could hear that Devin was in traffic. She could see his sexy ass sitting in his pewter colored Tahoe. Tall, brown skinned, faded hair with waves, a smooth voice and calm demeanor.

“A’ight I’m back.”

“It’s almost midnight, where are you headed?”  She wanted to kick herself for asking that question. She didn’t mean anything by it and was teasing him a bit. She hoped he didn’t take it the wrong way.

“Ah, I was just leaving a friend’s house playing a little Texas Hold ’em.”

“Texas hold ’em?”

“Yeah, you know. Poker.”

Uh-oh, I hope I don’t have a gambler on my hands.

Devin picked up on the silence and decided to calm Lisa’s fears. “Five of us from work meet at one of the other’s house once a month and we all put in about twenty to thirty dollars apiece, winner takes all. Throw in chips, beer and cigars, and it’s our night of indulgence. Sort of like how you women do when you hit the mall with each other.”

Glad that he wasn’t one of those people who spent their entire paycheck gambling, eventually losing everything, she breathed a sigh of relief, in her mind that is, but also made a mental note to keep watch for the gambling. She may have been being a bit overboard, but with her past troubles with men, she had her guard up

“So, you in for the night or what?”

“Yeah, I’m good,” she said as she squirmed in the bed.

“Damn, baby I really wanted to see you,” he said as he exited off the Bishop Ford Freeway.

Lisa wanted to see him but knew if she let him over she’d probably end up tearing him apart. She then thought about what Shay had said
‘Girl, you might as well. You’re feeling him and he’s feeling you and your shit ain’t been hit in a year and a half.’
She squeezed her legs together thinking about how good it would feel with something
real
inside her and before she knew it she said, “Well, why aren’t you here yet?”

She could hear the excitement in Devin’s voice even though he tried to cover it up. “Okay, I’m on my way.”

Detectives Spivey and Smith were working the three to eleven shift going over some notes on the shootings that occurred the night before. They were separate, but the word was that they were connected. An informant advised them that it was drug related and that Slim’s crew was the one who shot the victims. They were in the office typing a search warrant for a house off 106
th
and Ewing Street. Their informant advised them that a guy named Damon lived there and had all the information they needed. Spivey watched as Lt. Dixon approached his desk. He hated her. Had damn near twice as much time on the force as she and he had to answer to her.

Lt. LaDonna Dixon stood in front of his desk, tall and lean with her arms folded across her chest. “So, have you found anything out about those homicides, Spivey?”

“Both guys belonged to Sammy’s crew. We feel as if either Slim’s boys or the Fuentes’ hit them.”

“What makes you think that?” she asked.

“We have something called
informants
,” he said sarcastically, trying to be a smart ass.

“How concrete? You sure your informant’s not some dope fiend trying to get out of a dope charge or get paid?’

Smith, a young black detective who was born and raised on the west side, saw the look on Spivey’s face and knew the man was pissed that the lieutenant would even question him.

Spivey set his notes down and looked up at his supervisor. “Well, I’ve had some of the same informants back when you were still in high school dreaming about being a cop. I trust them more than I do…ah what the fuck. Look here, let me do my job, LT. I’ll have something for you soon.”  He grabbed his cell and stood. “Let’s go, Smith,” he barked.

Smith glanced at his lieutenant and shrugged his shoulders without Spivey noticing. She shook her head letting Smith know that it was okay. That she knew that he didn’t dislike her. She just hoped that he didn’t get what she considered to be a bad attitude and burned out like his veteran partners. She went to her office and shut the door. She pulled out the wallet-sized photos from her purse. She looked at the pictures of the two girls standing with their mother and father. One girl was fifteen and the other five. She had always thought they were the happy family. But years ago she looked harder at all the family photos and could tell the difference in her younger sister. In the photos of her before she was ten you could see the happiness and the photos from ten and beyond, if you looked closely you could see the dismal and sullen look in her eyes that said she had a story to tell—a story that
needed
to be heard.

LaDonna picked up the phone and called Tony Brown. He was a senior agent with the DEA. He promised to get her application for employment at the agency pulled and that he’d put in a good word for her and that she didn’t have anything to worry about and she couldn’t wait. She really wanted to be a federal agent and get away from Chicago, so bad she could taste it.

“Hello,” Brown said as he answered his cell.

“Can you talk?” LaDonna asked.

“For a second.”   Brown closed the door to his study in his expensive north suburban home. He was a federal agent and his wife was an attorney and they were doing well,
financially that is.

“I was wondering if you could come over? I mean if—”

“I can’t get away. She’s still awake and she asked me to help her with some paperwork for a case she’s working on,” he told LaDonna. She could tell by his tone that he wanted to see her, but she knew that there were times where he couldn’t get away.

“I understand. I guess it’s a hot bath and a glass of wine.”

“Damn, I really wish I could be there,” he whispered feeling himself getting hard thinking about the woman who was as strict as they came at work but as freaky as they come in bed.

She sighed, “Another time. Now get off the line before you get caught.”

“Love you,” he lied. He didn’t really love her. He loved her sex and companionship when he wanted to get away from his wife. Straight out of college he married a white woman. Since she’d gained a lot of weight, plus all the hours of being up late, as an up and coming prosecutor, including lack of rest coupled with stress, it showed on the woman. Unlike Brown, who at forty-eight looked as if he was still in his thirties.

“I love you too, bye,” she said. She packed up some paperwork and headed out of the office to go home, to have a glass of wine while she took a nice relaxing bubble bath. That’s after she used her vibrator to bring herself to an orgasm.

Lisa sat on the edge of the bed as Devin stood in front of her. Her oval face was at groin level. He could tell she was nervous, and she could tell she excited him. His erection could be seen through the jeans he was wearing. She grabbed a hold of his buckle and unfastened. She looked up at him and his face seemed to be a mile away like it was in the heavens smiling down on her. She was so wet that she knew she had to be leaving a spot on her expensive comforter. He caressed her face as she slowly pulled the Sean John jean shorts down and then the Polo boxer briefs went next. Devin moaned with delight as she massaged his thickness and to her surprised he grew even more. She struggled with herself not to put him in her mouth. She wanted to please him so badly and she could tell by the way he slowly bucked back and forth that he yearned for the warmth that he knew her mouth could provide.

Lisa stood and Devin realized that she wasn’t about to give him oral pleasure—at least not the first night of sex.

He slid her robe off her. “Take off your panties,” he commanded. He pulled his oversized white t-shirt over his head and his platinum cross got caught in it. Lisa had slipped out of her Victoria’s Secret panties when she noticed the chain bounce on a chest that she had only imagined what it looked like. She had felt them but didn’t realize that the pecs were that big. Devin’s workouts were definitely paying off. He didn’t have ripped ab muscles but his stomach was flat.

Devin liked what he saw. A Nubian goddess was standing before him—a bit shy and a bit nervous. He was willing to be the king to soothe those natural uneasy feelings that came about when a woman had sex with a man for the first time. He gently kissed her cheeks and then the corners of her mouth before slipping in his tongue. They kissed slowly as he caressed her breasts.

A thumb teased her nipple to hardness.

A strong hand gently massaged her back.

Lisa was poked several times by his thickness and she couldn’t wait to get it inside her. She stepped back and lay on the bed. Devin saw the hunger in her eyes. He smiled as he let his eyes canvass her body.

Perfect
, he thought.

He didn’t waste any time. His tongue played this little piggy with her toes and after minutes of toe foreplay he decided to do like that first little piggy—he went to the market. His tongue made a trail up the inner part of her leg and she twitched when he reached her inner thighs where nerve endings were abundant. He looked at her neatly trimmed mound and then at her face. Eyes were closed and teeth were clenched. He got turned on when he noticed her tweaking her nipples. Something she mastered while being locked down. He had wasted enough time. He wrote his name on her clit with his tongue. She bucked and moaned. He decided to write it in cursive—she cried out loud. He hummed a tune as he enjoyed the way she tasted, the way she smelled and the way she came.

Lisa was panting heavily. He rose from in between her wiping the nectar from his low trimmed mustache and beard. He didn’t have a goatee. He was never able to get it to connect.

Lisa opened her eyes. Her face was a bit twisted. Orgasms did that to a person. Devin was reaching to the floor for his jean shorts to get a condom. Lisa wondered did he assume that it was automatic that he was getting some—but she didn’t care because she needed some.

Devin smiled as he slid on the jimmy. “Open wide,” he jokingly commanded.

She did spreading her legs.

He eased himself into her tight love with all the intentions of causing her make several fuck faces and the way her pussy felt when he got all the way in—he knew he was going to end up making some of his own.
