“No,” he said with a graze of his teeth. “I’m going to fuck my friend—and make love to her at the same time.”

Dammit.
They ventured into dangerous territory. When he grazed his hand down the curve of her breast, she closed her eyes. How could his touch feel so damn right and so damn frightening at the same time?

“Shi?” The whisper coaxed her eyes open the way a demand would never have succeeded. Meeting the steady certainty in his golden gaze, her heart caved.

“I love you too, Matt.” The words were right. The emotion was right. Matt was right. “I am so scared of losing you though.”

“You’re never going to lose me, babe,” he said, flipping her over and suddenly she was on her back staring up at him. “You can’t.”

“How the hell can you be so sure?” Hope flared inside of her, but with the last few months—her parents, the pack—Matt was her rock. The world would be a colder, lonelier place without him.

“Because you’re mine,” he said, holding her gaze captive. “Don’t you see it Shi? You are my mate. We were pretending, only we weren’t. I’d do anything for you, fight any battle, go anywhere…you’re my other half. You always have been.”

It sounded right. Better—it
felt
right. “Well if I’m yours, then that means you’re mine.”

“Damn straight, pita.”

“Okay, then.” She laughed and found herself battling tears at the same time. Everything seemed to snap into place. Her uncertainty. Her hunger. Her loss. Her needs.

“Hey, no crying. It’s not fair.” Swiping away one tear, he leaned down and kissed away another.

“Sorry.” She laughed harder and the tears came faster.

“Are you trying to kill me, now?” Askance, he stared at her. “Why the hell are you crying?”

“Because I love you, you stupid idiot.”

“Yeah, okay, I’d cry if I loved me, too.” The sarcasm wasn’t lost on her.

Covering his mouth with her hand, she said, “I’m crying because I found what I’ve been looking for everywhere but the right place. You were why I wanted to take the bite, only I wasn’t certain at the same time. It’s not being a wolf that I want, not in and of itself…I want to be a wolf for you.”

His eyes softened, then he kissed her palm. “You don’t have to be anything but who you are for me. You’re the best friend. I can be your wolf with benefits and you can be my sweet, helpless human that I will always protect.”

The tease worked, her tears dried and she grabbed his ear, then twisted.

“Ow!” He yelped, but laughter danced in the sound. “Okay, my not-so-sweet or remotely helpless human…”

“Better.” She released his ear, then wrapped her arms around his neck. “So…about that fucking your best friend thing?”

“Yes, ma’am. Way to get me back on the subject.” Kissing him and laughing at the same time were hard, but so much more fun.

H
olding
Shiloh in his arms was a gift, more her quiet acceptance of the shift in their relationship—a real pleasure. Kissing her without reservation let him indulge his senses. Her desire filled his nostrils, sharp, sweet and with a hell of a lot of zest. Not content with only being kissed, Shiloh demanded in return. Her tongue stroked his even as she threaded her fingers through his hair. When her short, stubby nails dug into his shoulders, his wolf bucked. They wanted her marks on him and wanted to mark her when he eased into her…

Condoms.
Breaking the kiss, he pushed upward with his arms. Tension wound through him. He couldn’t have sex with her without condoms. No way he would put Shiloh in even a hint of danger not until they talked through…she stroked a hand over his chest.

“Change your mind?” The husky quality of her voice acted like a caress on his balls. His body ached with need. The moment she accepted the possibility of being his lover as well as his friend, lust stormed through him.

When he declared her his mate and she accepted? His exhaustion and unease fled. “Not even for an instant,” he told as he levered himself off the bed. “Don’t move.”
Condoms? Where would they be?
He didn’t spend that much time with human women, but he’d dated a couple—usually out-of-towners. Women who could be kept far from the pack, and he’d only ever slept with one of them. He couldn’t bring himself to sleep with the others no matter how much he liked them—
now I know why
.
None had been her. The woman he really wanted.

Stealing a glance at the bed, he smiled. Shiloh had rolled onto her side—not listening to him as usual—and watched him with combination of sensual curiosity and need. Oh yes, he understood the need very well. Blizzard or no blizzard, he’d be running again if he couldn’t find a damn condom.

“What are you doing?

He searched the drawers next to the bed, then the dresser and strode out of the bedroom for the bathroom. It hadn’t been
that
long had it? “Condoms, pita. Condoms. I am
not
getting you pregnant.”

“I’m on birth control,” she called after him and he halted.

“What kind?” The so-called pill, they’d learned, had too many issues to be an effective deterrent especially where her life was concerned. Miss it once and the effectiveness as birth control dropped. Miss it twice, and they might as well not have bothered. Not odds he favored. He wouldn’t take any chances with her. “Shi?”

Silence.

After stalking to the bedroom door, he glared at her. It wasn’t the time to tease him. Instead of yelling, however, he froze. Shiloh sat cross-legged on the bed, absolutely, gloriously naked. Average height, she had long legs—he used to tease her about being a gazelle when they were younger because she’d been taller than him until he hit puberty. Then he shot up nearly a foot and a half in height and towered over her.

His tongue seemed stuck to the roof of his mouth. Being naked was absolutely natural—for him. Somehow, he couldn’t recall ever seeing her nude. Had he ever been so privileged, he had no doubt he would have remembered every glorious inch of her. From the tan on her arms, which faded at her shoulders then disappeared completely across her torso. Her creamy breasts had never seen the sun, not even a dapple of freckles marred the silky skin.

“See something you like?” The remark sent a jolt of pure lust through him.

“Love,” he corrected, but remained rooted to the spot rather than lunging across the room. She hadn’t answered his question. No matter how much he wanted her, he would never allow her to be endangered by his lust. If she wanted to be a wolf, they’d do it the right way. “What kind of birth control?”

“An IUD.” Running her palms over the comforter, she gave him a shy smile. “Had it for years and had a checkup last summer after I graduated.”

Sounded good. He took a single step. “No issues?”

“None whatsoever? What about you dog breath? Anything I need to worry about? Condoms aren’t just to prevent pregnancy, you know.”

“Oh, I know.” The woman had a mouth on her. A mouth he loved. “Nothing for you to be worried about. Emma gave me a clean bill of health in autumn when I had my physical.” Their healer also happened to have medical training. “Not to mention most STDs aren’t a problem for wolves.”

“Yeah, yeah, only us fragile humans.” Amusement erased the blandness in her expression. Rising, she spread her arms. “So, I return to my original question? See something you like?” Nervousness surrounded her scent. Uncertainty and…his heart softened…embarrassment.

“I stand by my original answer.” He paced forward, slowly stalking her. Staking his claim meant assuring her. She needed to know she was everything. His everything. “I see who I love.”

Bold. Brassy. Full of sass.
Her willfulness contrasted with his determination to tow the line. Matt was content with the way things were in all things…except Shiloh. She matched him in stubbornness and persuaded him to take risks.

Catching her hand, he turned it over so he could press a kiss to her palm. His risk-taker who excelled at rocking her family boat and in some ways, their pack—was scared of him. “I love you, Shiloh.”

“You keep saying that.”

“I’m going to keep saying it until you believe in it as much as I do.” Slanting his mouth across hers, he kissed her slowly and thoroughly, a starving man drunk on the taste of her. No wonder he’d never kissed her. Against her lips, he whispered, “Do you remember the high school dance?”

Lashes sweeping up to reveal her deeply dilated pupils, she stared at him. “Are you really bringing up high school torture right now?”

“Yes,” he insisted, nudging her back onto the bed. “Do you remember the Christmas dance to be specific?” The Webbs had strung mistletoe over every entrance and then taken advantage of every woman entering to steal a kiss. Shiloh had been one of the girls, Milo had kissed her soundly and she’d laughed at him, then shoved him away. Matt ended up beneath the mistletoe with her and when he bent to oblige her with a kiss, she’d punched him in the chest.

“No more freebies.” A flush spread across her creamy skin.

“If I’d kissed you then,” he told her. “We’d have been having this conversation then.” Absolute was his faith in the fact. Kissing Shiloh was an addiction he had no intention of trying to defeat. Raising his head, he drank in the sight of her against his sheets. Only a couple of days playing pretend, and it hadn’t been remotely difficult, not when it was where she belonged. He’d always been careful of her, even when they teased and laughed and played. Whether wrestling, joking or playing, he’d always been careful of her.

She ran her fingers along his cheek and his spine locked at the ease of the contact. Despite her nervousness or maybe because of it, she wasn’t afraid to touch him. Casual caresses weren’t unheard of between them, how often had she snuggled into his arms? How many times had he lifted her? Hugged her? Even slept next to her? Too many to keep count.

From their first day of kindergarten together, she’d been his best friend. The one person he always counted on. They could spend every moment together or not see each other for months at a time, but when she arrived, his world righted and they fell into sync with each other.

“My mate,” he whispered before pressing a kiss to the curve of her breast above her heart. “I never looked for you because you were always here.”

He blinked, and he knew his wolf stared out of him—stared at her. Their mate. Shiloh raised her chin, then met his gaze steadily. “I adore you and I think you’re terribly sweet trying to reassure me that you mean what you say.”

“But?” He asked when she didn’t add it her sentence.

“But I’m pretty much a sure thing at this point. I’m more nervous I’m going to disappoint you than I am worried you aren’t telling the truth.” With a trembling hand she stroked down his chest. “I’ve always been a big believer that actions speak louder than words.”

“Pita, I want you so bad at the moment…” Even saying it let the floodgates part, and the need to bury himself within her until they didn’t know where he ended and she began burned in his blood. Closing a hand over her breast, he reveled at the catch in her breath and the stiffening of her nipple.

Shiloh had never been a fitness crazy, but she hiked and ran regularly. She possessed a lean body mass with the perfect amount of softness to give her curves. Light squeezes and rolling caresses with his thumb over the tip preoccupied him. The rapid increase to her pulse matched his. How he could be so starved for her and wish to languish with each touch baffled him. Yet, her presence always eased him. So why should now be any different?

Still mulling the concept, he traced a path to her neglected nipple. Huffing out a breath, Shiloh sat up, requiring he either ease back so he could continue petting or trap her with his body. More curious than anything, he withdrew a few inches. What he wanted to do was replace his fingers on her nipples with his lips… Her tug at his zipper rippled through the silence punctuated only by the sound of their breathing. The razor sharp clip of the teeth parting served as his only warning, before her hand gripped his cock. Heat pulsed through his nervous system.

Apparently, she was no longer playing. The sharp spice of her arousal beckoned him. They had plenty of time to play later. “Yes,” he whispered when she opened her mouth as though to say something. “You’re quite right.” He claimed her lips.

The urge to drown in her touch, her scent, and her kisses overwhelmed him. With three gentle pumps, she turned his already hard cock to stone and his balls tightened. Catching her wrist, he stilled her motion even as he delved deeper into her mouth. The thrust of his tongue mirrored what he longed to do with his dick.

Sliding his free hand over her belly, he sought the juncture between her thighs. Her labia were slick. Groaning, he circled her clit. Her gasping jerk filled him with elation. Easing a finger inside of her, he satisfied himself that she was ready for him. Hot and damp, she clamped on his questing finger and released a moan of her own.

“I wanted to take my time,” he told her.

“Later,” she ordered. He was more than happy to obey. After pulling away only long enough to lose his jeans, he crawled up the length of her, kissing and caressing as he went.

At her sex, he paused to press a kiss to those labia and to swirl his tongue once against her clit. The small taste of her a sweet tease to his palate. “Later,” he promised. “I am going to play here until you scream.” Then probably play some more.

Her shudder rewarded him. With another kiss to her belly, he continued his ascent. Every inch of her was a delight to his senses. Softer in some areas, and firmer in others—she really was so perfect. Done with the dance, he obeyed the grip of her hand on his hair and rose until his hips rested in the cradle of her thighs and her mouth opened to his.

Shiloh didn’t wait for him to settle into the contact of skin against skin. Electricity slid over him—electricity and a sense of absolute rightness. Claiming him with her kiss, she wrapped her hand around his cock and guided him to the slick entrance. He wasn’t prepared for the soft, dampness engulfing him as he eased inside of her one glorious inch at a time.

Their groans mirrored each other, and he pushed deeper into her body, a relentless thrust until he sank all the way to his balls. Raising his head, he met her sensual gaze. “Wow,” she whispered and his soul echoed the sentiment. His nerve endings lit at the sweet, delicious friction of being inside of her. When he pulled back, the pleasure arcing along his spine grew more intense. A thrust brought him home and she wrapped her legs around him, offering him greater access.
