And then not to remember that he’d done it?

Impossible.

But when he’d bent to reach for it, everything had become blurry. The one second he had left of a coherent mind, sent up a sharp alarm inside him, but it was too late as he listed to the side, and then he dropped to the floor.

He used every ounce of willpower left from his paralyzed body to keep his eyes opened, and just before he’d blanked out, he saw something he knew very well.

A
nna hummed as the shower mist sprayed her body, then the soap came, and next more warm mist. She couldn’t remember how many years it had been since she’d felt so light that she had hummed. She knew it for what it was ... complete happiness.

She was up in the middle of the night, just because she’d missed Zyn's strong body wrapped around her, so it must be something very special, she thought with a small laugh.

Once she’d gotten out of the shower, she had just dried her body, and then she wore only the towel wrapped around her.

She couldn’t be hoping for more lovemaking could she?

That was her thought when she’d come back into the bedchamber, but suddenly she’d stalled. A hot blush covered her from head to toe.

“Oh, you startled me, Vane!” she exclaimed. She looked quickly around for Zyn. “Is, um, something wrong?” she asked.

Then she started to back up as Vane’s big black space-suited body had kept clomping toward her. “Damn, baby, you look good in that towel,” Vane’s air-infused voice said, emanating from the suit.

“Where is Zyn?” Anna demanded. “Stay there!” she ordered sharply. “This is
not
funny, Vane.”

But he hadn’t stopped, while she’d clutched her towel and backed up, until her knees hit the bed platform. There was no way Zyn would have allowed Vane in there with her like that, Anna thought with alarm. Then Vane was a huge black blob in front of her, just inches away with his black vinyl-looking hands reaching out.

He had snatched the edge of her towel.

“The only thing better, baby, is you without this damn towel on.”

Anna screamed, as he tore the towel away, then she tried to get by him, but he grabbed her against his slick spacesuit, and she couldn’t break free.

“Zyn! Zyn!” she cried.

“That’s it, rub your hot body on me,” Vane hissed. Then he said, “Zyn’s knocked out, baby. He won’t bother us.”

Anna screamed again.

Chapter Seventeen

––––––––

Z
yn knew the minute he regained consciousness that he’d been drugged. And he knew by who.

Vane.

He’d seen Vane’s black gravitational boots right before he’d blacked out. He also knew he was not at his residence any longer and he had some kind of clamp around his throat. Immediately, he thought of Anna, but he managed not to move a muscle so he could assess.

Vibrations told him they were on a ship. Being drugged by one of his team, told him Vane had succumbed to the temptation of the bounty money. The thick metal collar around his neck told him he was screwed, as Axi would say. It was a retention collar and a slight tug on it proved it was bonded to an energy band behind where he lay sprawled at an odd angle.

Listening carefully over the vibrations of the engine, he heard a soft sob. That brought his eyes open to see Anna curled on the other side of the hull from him. Her head was at an odd angle also, because she had a retention band circling her throat with the back magnetized to the band on the hull behind her. Both their bands were slightly raised so it made laying as impossible as sitting.

She was nude.

He hissed unlike anything he’d ever heard come from him before, and then his fangs had punched out as he felt his eyes heating.

Had she been harmed,
exploded through his thoughts.

“Zyn,” she whispered, with her eyes tragic as she looked at him. Then she must have seen his primal response, because she quickly whispered, “He didn’t hurt me, Zyn. He didn’t.” She sobbed once, and then added, “It's Vane.”

Zyn clenched his eyes and used everything he’d ever been taught to control his reaction. It wasn’t working. The feelings that throbbed through him were about protecting Anna and the fact she was vulnerable.

He finally managed half of his control and he awkwardly tugged off his undone shirt, then he opened his eyes and he tossed it at Anna.

“Put that on,” he growled.

He thought if Vane had come into the cargo bay, with Anna undressed, he might wrench his own head off to stop him from seeing her.

“Oh lords, thank you, baby,” Anna whispered. “He’s going for the bounty,” she added.

Zyn couldn’t get his fangs to retract, but his brain cooled a bit as soon as Anna had his shirt to cover herself.

He finally managed to say lowly, “He drugged your blood.”

Her eyes widened. “He does want me, Zyn. He says it is a two for one. The bounty and me. But he wants me to do it.”

“He can’t force you,” Zyn uttered, and it had the effect of further relieving the rage that thrummed through him at the danger to his female. “You have to willingly go inside the suit.”

“Oh.” She grabbed the metal collar around her throat, and she started squirming. “Lords, I hate this thing,” she whimpered.

“Anna,” he said sharply, and she stilled to look at him. “You cannot get out of it ... I cannot get out of it.”

She gasped in distress, and he knew she had been hoping he could save them when he’d revived.

Then, Zyn sensed it before the hatch hissed open, and Vane came through the open hatch.

“Twelve hours or so and I’ll be so rich, Anna. Then, I can give you anything.”

“Soto will be dead before then, and the bounty useless,” Zyn said.

Vane’s visor turned toward him and away from Anna. “You never lie,” Vane said, with the automatized hiss of air in his voice.

“I know,” Zyn said, with the unemotional voice he had mastered.

“But you could start at any time,” Vane hissed. “Over a woman. And I agree with you, Viper, she will be worth it.”

“I have no reason to lie about this. You will not release me alive either way,” Zyn said.

But Vane ignored his goading, which Axi would have been proud of him for employing.

“And that is what I want to discuss with our precious Anna. The choice; do I send Zyn alive or dead, baby. It’s all up to you.”

nna didn’t know if what she was doing was right or wrong, but being free gave her more choices. If what Zyn had said was true, and she had to get into the suit with Vane to have intercourse, as he’d wanted, that had to be a process. So she would avoid it as long as possible.

“Yes!” she exclaimed, to Vane’s barter of sex for Zyn’s life.

Zyn had said there wouldn’t be a bounty on him any longer, and she believed him, thinking it had to do with Brax setting out to kill Soto. Zyn looked as emotionless as he could, and she didn’t know if he thought she was doing a good thing or a bad thing.

Suddenly her collar unattached from the hull behind her and she just managed to keep from falling flat. Then the heavy metal around her neck clicked and hissed open. Vane’s large gloved hand reached out.

“Let me help you up, baby.”

That cold vinyl closed around her fingers, and he pulled her to her feet.

“Can I say goodbye to him?” She looked up at Vane’s visor. “Privately, please.”

Vane’s fingers tightened around hers. “There’s nothing you can do. You can’t help him escape that.”

“I know,” she said. “That’s why I thought you’d let me. So I can move on.”

“Damn women and their soft feelings,” Vane muttered. “As long as you bring that soft sex to me like you want it, a minute won’t hurt.”

He let go of her hand, and he turned. Anna raced to Zyn, and dropped to her knees before him.

“I won’t say goodbye,” Zyn growled fiercely, as if he had trouble controlling himself.

Anna saw the bright red pulses in his eyes, but she looked away to track Vane as he moved through the hatch. He looked back at them, and she held her breath ... then the hatch had slid shut.

“Bite it,” she demanded sharply, and she threw her wrist up to Zyn’s mouth at the same instant she crawled over him.

One minute was not enough, but maybe they only had to be connected. She reached for his shaft in the folds of his pants. Not hard. Oh lords. But the second she touched it, it hardened in her hand.

Zyn took her wrist, not questioning her and that probably surprised her the most. Then she was sliding over his shaft, seating herself, just as his fangs entered her wrist. She quickly went for his throat.

“Oh lords, I can’t just bite it,” she whimpered, through the arousal of his bite flaming through her.

Zyn was smart, brilliant even, and he must have guessed her purpose, because he sliced his neck as he had so long ago, and his blood seeped past her lips.

Shock ricocheted through her body as a tremendous orgasm exploded through her at the contact of his blood, her blood, and their sexual connection. Zyn grunted with it too.

Then, he had the presence of mind to push her off him, licking her wrist closed.

“Hurry, mate,” he ordered sharply.

Shaking, Anna backed away from him, while she tried to get hold of herself.

“The smartest thing I’ve ever seen another being do,” Zyn said.

Pride unlike anything she’d ever felt ran through her as the hatch door started to swish open.

“You never wooed me once!” she exclaimed at Zyn, as if she was furious. “No dinner, no kisses. A woman likes to be courted just a little, not screwed like a prostitute!”

“Oh good,” Vane said, and he sounded pleased. “A lover’s quarrel.”

An hour later, Anna had no clue whether what she had tried to do would do any good. She’d read and told Zyn that a mated Viper was twice as strong as an unmated one. There were even supposed to be telepathic connections grown between the mates. Or that Viper and human couple, married forty years, had them.

But she’d not felt a thing since she’d mated with Zyn. The only thing she was certain of was that they had mated. That powerful feeling which they’d had between them definitely wasn’t normal.

Would it be enough for Zyn to break that retention collar? If it had been, wouldn’t Zyn be there by now?

Anna put some food in her mouth, as she tried to pretend she was happy to be eating across from Vane. At least that very random scheme about getting Vane to try to court her a bit had worked, which she’d thought up at the last second. It was holding off the “get in Vane’s suit with him” for a while.

But his table conversation was just gross.

“Your nipples are so pink and perfect, Anna. I’ll bet your sex is just a shade darker. Too bad this damn suit won’t let me taste your pretty slit, but I bet we can get creative because you are so petite and you can curl down to suck on my shaft.”

Vane’s reflective visor was turned toward her, across the small table in his quarters on his personal ship.

He wanted an answer? He was mad.

“Why do you have to wear the suit, Vane?” she asked, instead of answering.

His shiny bulged-out shoulder shrugged. “I’m not a monster inside here, baby. Just a man who had a bad accident on a gas planet, and the only way to keep me alive is in this pressure and darkness.”

Anna made herself reach her hand across the table, to cover his gloved hand. “I’m so sorry. Was it long ago? And what will the pressure do to me?”

She had to keep him thinking that she was going along with it, while she frantically tried to think of other escapes she might try. Maybe she could bust some part of the ship and make it stop moving, she thought.

Just as she had that thought, a voice sounded inside her mind.
“I already thought of that, love. But I will just stop it, and not break it, so we can return home in it.”

Anna’s hand leaped to her temple, where she had distinctly heard Zyn’s voice.

“What’s up? No headache shit,” Vane demanded.

“Ah,” Anna stuttered.
“Are you free?”
she asked back mentally.

“Yes, love.”

“Oh my lords!” Anna exclaimed out loud.

“Tell him you have to go to the cleansing chamber to prepare,”
Zyn said to her mentally.

“What.
The.
Fuck.” Vane demanded, in response to her outburst.

“I think we both know it’s time, Vane,” she said, as sexily as she could. “Just let me go freshen up, and you can show me how we do this.”

The minute Anna stood up she’d felt the ships vibrations stop beneath her feet. She looked at Vane to judge his reaction. But she could tell he hadn’t noticed it. Probably because of the suit.

“Like two minutes and no longer,” he warned.

“Five,” she countered, and she swayed her hips beneath Zyn’s shirt, showing some hip. “I want to smell sweet, when I get in there with you.”

yn hadn’t cared to kill one of his team. They had fought side by side for over two years together. But he considered the fact that if it hadn’t been for his Anna’s brilliantly conceived plan, Vane would have killed him, and forced Anna into intercourse.

He’d heard of it before, from people with normal emotions and feelings. They had said a beautiful and desirable woman could have the power to conquer men.

It must have happened to Vane, to turn him bad.

Zyn could relate. Anna had changed his existence.

Now he had a
mate.

He’d never considered such a thing before. And his beautiful mate had saved his ass. She was stronger than she appeared.

He had moved past her so fast, she hadn’t noticed, when she’d gone to the cleansing chamber as he’d asked her to do. She might have sensed him as she turned to look back, but he had already been entering Vane’s personal cabin.

“Stay there, love,”
he’d told her telepathically.

“Be careful, baby,”
she’d told him.

With his new powers, which gave him the surprising strength to rip even metal apart, he had Vane before Vane knew what had grabbed him. Zyn threw Vane into the hull wall. Then he held Vane up by his throat, feet off the ground.
