While scripture documents angels as having both physical and supernatural abilities, their habitation is clearly spelled out in Romans 1:20. We may understand the unseen realms through our understanding of the realms we see. Because of this, the unseen realms are the same as the Earth we know, in the sense of being physical worlds. As I have already explained, many scriptures document heaven as a place containing natural terrain. The heavens are real, physical places, and the beings who dwell in them have physical bodies of some sort. If this were not true, there would be no point in a physical resurrection of the dead.

The heavens are physical, yet separated from each other by a dimensional variance, similar to the way frequencies divide radio stations from each other. Angels are capable of tuning the dial of those frequencies within their bodies to traverse different realms. Without understanding this concept, it’s easy to think of angels, as well as all things referred to as spiritual, as being intangible. There must be a distinction, however, to spiritual things that are spiritual in an abstract sense, while other spiritual things are clearly described in scripture with no abstractions at all. The river of life, for example, is certainly a spiritual river, and people can talk about it in a spiritually abstract sense and be completely accurate—but that doesn’t negate the fact that it is a real, physical river, in a very nonabstract sense.

Some Christians may contend that angels do not have physical bodies at all, because Ephesians 6:12 states that Christians are not at war with flesh and blood, but with powers, principalities, and spiritual forces in high places (angels), hence the conclusion that angels are not composed of flesh and blood. Such an interpretation can’t mean that angels don’t have physical bodies, though, and following are two reasons why this is the case.

First, if angels could have bodies of flesh and blood even temporarily, Ephesians 6:12 would contradict numerous other scriptures. The Bible documents numerous examples of the fact that angels can do anything people can do: eat (Genesis 18:8, 19:3; Psalms 78:25), sexually reproduce (Genesis 6), and generally operate in the physical realm of Earth as normal people (Genesis 18:1-19:24, 22:11; 2 Samuel 24; 2 Kings 19:35; Psalms 78:49, 91:11; Matthew 28:2; Acts 10, 12, and many others). All of these scriptures document angels performing tasks that require a physical body of some sort, even if only a temporary one. In light of this, in order to have a noncontradictory interpretation of scripture, Eph- esians 6:12 must mean that there is a stark contrast to war against beings of
mortal
flesh and blood as compared to angelic beings. What it can’t mean is that angels don’t have any kind of physical body, because they clearly do, with hands, feet, eyes, voices, heads, mouths, hair, faces, and other parts—all clearly described in scripture (Daniel 10:5-21; Revelation 8:1-9:21, 14:6-11, 15:1-16:21; Acts 1:10, and countless other scriptures).

Second, Jesus said that believers in Christ would one day be like the angels, which are in heaven. The believers Jesus spoke of will have physical bodies that will be resurrected from the dead (1 Thessalonians 4:16). Therefore the angels, who these believers will be like, must also have physical bodies.

3.2. The Inhabitants of Lucifer’s Kingdom of the Past

Now that it is understood that there are three types of flesh, pertaining to beings in three different stages of glory (1. glorified and pseudoimmortal—depending on the tree of life; 2. cursed and mortal; 3. angelic—completely immortal), the questions above concerning the inhabitants of Lucifer’s kingdom of the past can now be answered. Lucifer’s kingdom of the past originally had only glorified beings within it, some of which were in the first stage of existence, as Adam and Eve were—waiting to be translated—and some of which were angels.

When Lucifer sinned and fell from glory, those who were not angels yet were cursed and made mortal, and then eventually died or were killed in the flood of Lucifer. Furthermore, because Lucifer’s kingdom was a mixed environment containing both fallen angels and mortals, there were probably Nephilim as well.

How long it took before God destroyed Lucifer’s kingdom since the time Lucifer first sinned and unleashed the curse of sin and death on Earth is unknown. What is known, however, is the fact that the mortal beings who were killed in the flood of Lucifer are most likely what we know of as the Cro-Magnon, Neanderthal, homo erectus, and homo habilis. All descriptions ofhumanoid angels in the Bible describe them as men (three examples among many others: Genesis 18:20-22; Isaiah 14:16; Acts 1:9-11), so it makes sense that they were humanoids of some type, since their appearance is very similar to that of humans today, and they were actually capable of interbreeding with people (Genesis 6).

Biologically speaking, Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon are classified as homo sapiens (though Neanderthal is distinguished with the slight variation of
homo sapiens neanderthalenis),
the same classification as modern humans. This classification is derived from the evolutionary perspective, however, which suggests that they mutated into the humans of today. They were very similar to the humans of today, there’s no disputing that, but scripture states that
Adam was created from the dust of the Earth,
not mutated from a predecessor. Therefore if the fossils of Cro-Magnon, Neanderthal, homo erectus, and homo habilis are as old as scientists think they are, then they have to be members of a pre-Adamite civilization. In any case, there is a completely biblical explanation for their existence, no matter how old they are.

Those who were angels already were not killed, because the only way to destroy them is to cast them into the lake of fire. But something was done to prevent them from having the unlimited access to the glorified realms that they originally inhabited (Ezekiel 28:16—recall the previously mentioned stones of fire). Their kingdom was destroyed, and their access to the throne of God became limited to occasions of special invitation.

Now the question remains: Since their home was destroyed, where did they spend all their time when they weren’t in the highest heaven?

We know from Genesis 3 that Satan was allowed into the Garden of Eden, where he tempted Adam and Eve through his spiritual manipulation of a serpent. From this fact, it may be assessed that the fallen angels have been allowed access into glorified realms of the second heaven. Revelation 12:9 documents that they (the fallen angels) haven’t been cast out of the second heaven yet because Satan still accuses the saints before God day and night (and God’s throne is in the third heaven, which is higher in glory than the second heaven). Their direct interaction, at least on Earth, however, is currently restrained by the prayers of the church (2 Thessalonians 2:6-8). Because they can’t take over the world by force, as they tried to do in the days of Noah (Genesis 6), they exert their influence on Earth in a hidden manner, through the power of deception. For the most part, the people of Earth are consciously unaware of their presence, though knowledge of these beings proliferate every culture in the world.

Since Satan was able to regain power on Earth after deceiving Adam and Eve, it’s likely that he was able to regain similar positions of power in other places throughout the cosmos (in the heavens) using the same tactic he used on Adam and Eve. This appears to be the indication of Revelation 12:4. Those species who are deceived by him are placed under his authority to a certain extent. With these details in perspective, it can be determined that fallen angels are still spread throughout the cosmos. These evil beings are planning and plotting, as before, how they will attempt to overthrow God, yet many if not all of them will eventually be confined to Earth (Isaiah 24:21-23; Revelation 12:4). All their activities

will climax in a final confrontation where they will be overpowered and destroyed by God.

*The stars represent the fallen angels that rebelled against God when they aligned themselves with Satan. This scripture reveals that Satan will lead them (cast them down) to the Earth in the future.

3.3. A New Theory About the Cro-Magnon and Neanderthal

Orthodontist Jack Cuozzo, author of
Buried Alive: the Startling Truth about Neanderthal Man,
recently compiled an amazing collection of facts about Neanderthals.

An accomplished orthodontist of thirty years, Jack Cuozzo first started studying human skeletal structures when he came to the realization that his clients appeared to be maturing younger and younger with each passing generation. His quest to understand this riddle led him to study human skulls of earlier generations in order to compare the bone development. One of the primary means of assessing the age of a person using human skulls concerns a unique fact about the human skull in particular; the human skull continues to grow throughout the entire lifespan. The two areas of the human skull where this is most prominent are the protrusion of the jaw and the thickening of the brow.

Eventually Dr. Cuozzo ended up studying Neanderthal skulls, attempting to assess the ages of Neanderthal children. Using an age-progression analysis, Dr. Cuozzo discovered that Neanderthal skulls belonging to children looked exactly the way normal modern homo sapiens skulls would look if they matured very slowly (with the exception of average cranial capacity).
