I am particularly grateful to several readers who took the time to read and comment on the entire manuscript in an earlier form: Helen Porter and Joan Clark in St. John's, and Yona Zeldis McDonough in Brooklyn. Two other early readers without whom this book would have been impossible were Donald and Joan Morgan, not only wonderful parents but the best research assistants one could hope for, especially in matters concerning St. John's history.

To all these people, and to the many others who helped me find obscure bits of information or talked to me about their experiences, or those of their family members, in Brooklyn, I am deeply grateful. Any errors which remain after all these thoughtful readings and conversations are, of course, entirely my own.

Many thanks to everyone at Breakwater Books, especially Annamarie Beckel, a wonderful editor who convinced me I could substantially shorten the original manuscript of this book without it bleeding to death from the cuts. I also thank Rhonda Molloy for her lovely creative work on the cover design and interior.

Most of all, I am forever grateful to Jason, Chris and Emma for constant love and support.
