. Eckhardt Christian was only thirty-seven years old in 1944. He entered the service as a naval cadet in 1926 and served as a signal and flak artillery officer. He joined the Luftwaffe in 1933 and trained as an aerial observer and bomber pilot before attending the Air War Academy for General Staff training in 1938. He commanded II and III Groups, KG 26, during the Battle of Britain and was continuously occupied in various staff posts with OKW and OKL thereafter. He was promoted to major general on September 1, 1944, and named chief of the Operations Branch of the Luftwaffe three days later. He held the post until the end of the war (Christian Personnel Extract).
