Bumpers was filled with the usual after-school crowd. Laura
McCall, Tammy Lucero, Mellisa McConnell, and Funny Hawthorne were sitting with
Elizabeth Harvey and Heather Clark at two tables they had pushed together.
"That's interesting," said Laura half to herself.
"What's interesting?" asked Melissa, glancing
quickly around the room.
Laura raised one eyebrow as she gave a catlike twitch to the
long braid that started at the top of her head and came down over her shoulder.
"Jana Morgan is sitting with Randy Kirwan, Christie Winchell is talking to
Tim Riggs and Whitney Larkin, Melanie Edwards is talking to both Scott Daly and
Shane Arrington at the jukebox, and Beth Barry's kidding around with Chet
Miller."
Tammy frowned. "What's wrong with that? It's not as if
they aren't friends with those kids."
Laura gave Tammy a superior look. "Of
course
they
are. But I've been noticing lately that the great and wonderful Fabulous Five
haven't been hanging around together as much. In fact I haven't even seen them
walking together in the school halls."
"You're right," said Elizabeth. "Come to
think of it, they weren't sitting together in the cafeteria today either."
"And I've seen Jana more often with you, Funny, than
with her other friends," added Heather.
"That's because we're coeditors on
The Wigwam,
"
Funny said, glancing nervously at Laura. "We've got an awful lot of work
to do to finish up our part of the yearbook by the end of the school year."
"I don't think that's all there is to it," said
Laura. "I saw Melanie and Katie arguing by their lockers yesterday. I
think Katie was getting on Melanie's case about being boy crazy again. They
both looked pretty angry."
"And I saw Beth and Christie picking at each other in
social studies class," said Melissa with a pleased look on her face. "Do
you think that the sweet and precious Fabulous Five are finally breaking up?"
she asked, looking at Laura for the answer. The others appeared dumbfounded at
her suggestion.
"Maybe," said Laura, stroking her braid and
smiling slyly. "It sure looks that way."
Is it true that The Fabulous Five are really breaking up?
