Sari Bair Range is the collective name for the three main ridges and their numerous spurs, gullies and other geological features. The three main ridges are: First Ridge (Sari Bair, or Main Ridge), which runs almost perpendicular to the coast from Plugge's Plateau north-east to end at Hill 971; Second Ridge (Bolton's Ridge), which runs approximately north–south and parallel to the coast from Baby 700 to 400 Plateau; and Third Ridge (Gun's Ridge), which originates at Chunuk Bair and also runs south parallel to the coast, ending at Gaba Tepe. The name Sari Bair, meaning Yellow Slope, actually denotes in Turkish the cliffs at ‘the Sphinx'. This name was misappropriated by the British and used to denote the First Ridge running north-east from Plugge's to Hill 971.
