'Are you going to come back with us now?' his mother asked.

'Wasn't planning to. Jo?'

'You can stay on for as long as you like,' she added, knowing it was the truth. 'He manages to keep me warm in bed at night,' she said cheekily.

'Honestly, the jobs I have to do in this place. You'd never believe it.'

'You ain't see nothing yet.'

'I think we'd better go and see Sally now,' his mother said tactfully. 'Tell her our news.'

'You can tell her ours too,' Mike said. 'In fact, I'm ready to shout it from all the roof tops in Barstow.'

'Don't you dare,' Joanne told him. 'If you're this excited about getting engaged, what will you be like by the wedding day?'

'I can't wait.'
