“What do you mean?”

“Our union, it was, well forbidden.”

“Forbidden?” she said sitting up and staring at him.

“Our kinds we were never allowed to mingle.”

“You make it sound like we are from different planets.”

“I want to tell who I really am. Annasara, I have not been honest with you, I was afraid you would reject me. I am not like you, I am…” Triton stopped in mid sentence as his keen ears perked up to an approaching car.

“Get dressed, quickly. Grab Brenden go the cellar!” He shouted. His face showed the seriousness of the situation. Annasara jumped out of the bed, grabbing her clothes, complied with his order, raced the nursery, pulled the sleeping babe from the crib and ran to the basement. Dressed only in his jeans, Triton grabbed his weapon, carefully creeping barefoot out to the veranda checking around. Stronger than any vibration he had ever sensed. Hitting him like a ton of bricks, Triton’s disposition changed. He pulsated out his strongest vibe and the returning sensations shook his body. Wavelengths intensified as whoever sent them out grew near. Out of the corner of his eye, Triton caught of glimpse of a glowing shadow coming straight for him. Triton hissed as the fangs grew long and over his lips, swiping out his sword the shadow jumped back just in time and missed being decapitated. He is quick, powerful; Triton thought and called him out.

“Show your self.” Triton yelled angrily.

A voice spoke out from the darkness.

“You’re hospitality could use some work, brother.”

Stepping forward the large framed male came into the light, revealing who was speaking. Umbriel stood regally, and folded his arms. Triton tightened his grip on the sword. “Bastard! I nearly killed you.”

“I’m too fast for you now, my abilities have been let’s say, increased.”

Triton advanced one step forward to him, and with one quick movement, embraced his friend and they laughed and patted each other on the backs.

“You shit. You should have told me you were coming early.”

“And ruin the surprise? Not a chance. Actually, I told no one I was coming; they think I have been captured. Our runners are feeding false info to our elders, I will in fact escape in about three or fours days and return the victorious hero.”

“You always were theatrical.” Triton said and punched his arm.

“Enough small talk, where is this boy of yours?”

Triton
cursed as he forgot all about her hiding in the basement, probably in an apprehensive state of panic waiting for the all clear.

“Make your self at home; I will go retrieve Annasara and the boy.”

Triton
bolted down the steps knocking before entering. “Sara, I’m coming in.”

Triton
walked to the cold barrel of his gun staring at him, raising his hands he treaded lightly into the room.

“You tell me right now what’s going on!” she demanded hysterically. With one slight step towards her, Triton made calming gestures with his hands.

“Alright, calm down.”

“I will not calm down! You are putting our son in danger.”

“There is no danger, I over reacted. Please put down the gun.”

Annasara
moved her head back and forth in disagreement. Shaky hands held the weapon still pointed directly at him. Triton lowered his hands placed them on his hips and tried again to diffuse the situation.

“Think of Brenden, you want that gun to misfire and hit him?”

Again,
she shook her head side to side, but did not offer the weapon to him.

“Did I come at a bad time?” Umbriel said as he came down the stairs into the confrontation. Startled by the unfamiliar male voice Annasara turned towards him quickly, fired the weapon. The deafening ricochet awoke the baby who cried out as Triton and Umbriel shouted in protest. The bullet grazed past Umbriel’s ear and lodged itself into the stucco wall. Triton with cunning swiftness snatched the weapon from her hand switched on the safety and stuck it into the back of the waistband of his pants. Picking up the howling child Triton held him close and quieted him down with soft words and kisses.

“Give us a minute will you brother?” Triton asked looking at Annasara and then back to his friend.

“Certainly.” Umbriel said and went up the stairs. Triton noticed her hands still shaking, her mouth trembling trying to hold in the emotional outburst.

“I understand you are upset.”

“I could have killed someone! Our son!”

“It’s okay you just under a lot of pressure, you have been frightened.” He said holding onto her. “Umbriel came to visit, quite a surprise. I want you to meet him.”

“I can’t face him.” She cried, “I almost shot him.”

“He’s been shot at plenty of times, he won’t be mad.” Triton laughed but tried to stifle it.

“Are you sure?”

“I shoot at him all the time. Come on.” He said and wiped the tears from her eyes and kissed her forehead, then taking her hand in his led her up the stairs and into the living room.

“Umbriel this is my wife Annasara.”

“How could I forget?” he said nodding at her watching blush with embarrassment the color filling the skin under her cheek pinking them up.

“Sorry I shot at you.”

Umbriel became intoxicated with her sweet flesh, his eyes glowed brightly as she gave him a hug and the heat of her skin called out to him. Umbriel stared at the diamond that graced her delicate skin and he remembered the meeting in the restaurant before the war. Triton observed Umbriel’s reaction and bore his glow into Umbriel how smirked at him. Annasara pulled back went back to Triton’s side.

“And this, my brother is my son Brenden Umbriel.” Triton said holding the boy to face Umbriel. Umbriel surveyed the child closely.

“Remarkable. He looks just like you.”

“Brenden this is your uncle.” Triton told the boy who was already reaching out to Umbriel. Umbriel looked to triton for permission to hold the child, Triton nodded and handed Brenden over. Taking the boy into his arms, Umbriel held him high in the air as if he was examining the creature. Bringing him back down the boy took his tiny hands placed one on each of Umbriel’s chiseled cheeks and placed his fore head on his uncle’s pulled back and talked some one year old gibberish to him as children that do.

“I think he likes me.” Umbriel told them and the boy set his head gently down on his shoulder and yawned widely. Umbriel held the strangest face, he was so touched by the child’s unconditional love, he nearly cried. He now knew why Triton had left and it made Umbriel want one of his own. Handling over the boy to his mother, Umbriel stared in amazement at the creation of the two worlds. Annasara could sense the men needed to talk. “If you don’t mind I am going to him and myself to bed. You two can catch up.
“Goodnight, you do have a fine boy.” Umbriel offered honestly.

“Thank you, goodnight.” Annasara said. Triton kissed his wife and child and watched until she disappeared in out of the room. Turning to his best friend, fake punched him in the chest and they shared a laugh. Strolling out to the patio, the vampires stood under the navy sky and looked out over the ocean. The water swayed as a bright reflection of the moon streaked across, illuminating the night.

“What made you decide to take up my offer to visit? I thought you could not tear your self away from Nala. Sorry, I mean the war.”

Umbriel’s tone held a bitter tone, “Apparently I am not her flavor anymore.”

Triton raised an eyebrow. “Really? I know that feeling all too well.”

“Maybe I’ll find a nice human and settle down. It seems to have made you very happy man, I mean vampire. But tell me what made Annasara shoot at me?”

Triton
signed with resolve, “Bounty hunters.”

“There’s a price on your head. My reason for the early arrival I’m afraid. But do you think anyone knows about you wife and child?”

“I don’t think so, I think Nala and Januar both would give a right arm to have me at their mercy.” Triton explained.

Umbriel’s eyebrows furrowed. “I could understand Nala wants you back, but why would Januar have need for you?”

“I have no idea. I need to tell you something. You have to swear to me on your life you will not confide this to anyone.”

Umbriel faced him.
“What is it?”

“The sun no longer affects me. I walk amongst the daylight.” Triton said.

Umbriel scoffed loudly.
“You sure no how to joke my brother.”

“I assure you it is no joke. I am truly immortal.”

“How can this be?” He said still skeptical.

“The baby, somehow changed Annasara her DNA, I bit her. Merely by accident.”

“You bit her? Accidentally?”

“We had a fight. I could not control myself, I tasted her, for a moment. Erased her memory of it but somehow taking in her blood changed me. I fail to burn from exposure.”

Umbriel took a seat, the shock to much for him to stand, “Do you have any idea what this means?”

“Possessing this is the greatest gift and curse. Every vampire will kill for the ability. We could walk among the humans in daytime undetected.”

“Right now, you could walking to any lair during their slumber and exterminate them. Januar, his whole clan. You could end this.”

“After that would be another clan seeking its power, it would never end. It is best we keep this between us. There has to be another way to bring a truce.”

“Truce? Brother you are living in a fantasy world if you think they will back down, you know we kept our end of the bargain for centuries. Januar is greedy, he wants to control every last vampire.”

“I know, and I do not live in fantasy. The reality is that I have something they all would kill for and now I have to do everything in my power to protect it. Annasara and Brenden are my world. Even if I did leave to kill Januar, I could not leave them unprotected.”

“I would stay; protect them until you came back.” Umbriel said. Triton turned to the night sky, the idea weighed heavily upon him. It would be possible; if the war ended, he could live with out the fear of Januar coming after him. Nala could rule her clan in peace, Umbriel could, well he was not sure what Umbriel would do, but they could stay together. The decision weighed heavy on Triton’s heart, guilt seeped throughout his soul for what he had done. Umbriel leaned back against the wall staring at the guilty look that fell across Triton’s face. “Why is it that you could leave so easily, when were in the mist of the fight?” Umbriel’s question sounding like a challenge rang loudly in Triton’s ears. He could not tell the truth to his best friend.

“I could not take the city anymore, the death, the fighting. I had Annasara’s well being to think about, her with the child”

Umbriel snorted at Triton’s avoidance of his question, “You will never
be human again. You are and always will be immortal.”

“I am human. I am fucking human male.” Triton growled lowly as not raise his voice for Annasara to hear.

“You are dead. I am dead; we drink the blood of the living. No matter how many children you sire, how long you stand in the sun, you cannot reverse it. Why is it so hard to accept?”

“I don’t know.” Triton sighed. Umbriel pushed on for the truth. “What else, brother?”

“I made a deal with Januar.” Triton quipped. Umbriel slammed a clenched fist on the wall. “You did WHAT!”
