MATTHEW

I rolled over in bed slowly opening my eyes. For the first time I was happy that I had a woman in bed with me that I cared about. It was not some random model or actress like I was used to in my celebrity professional athlete life. I wrapped my arm along the bed seeking out her warm body but only found cold sheets in her place. I propped myself up and looked for her. She was not in bed. Perhaps she was already awake and was ordering breakfast in bed or in the shower. I got out of bed and stretched and wrapped the bed she around me and walked into the main living area of the penthouse hotel room. There was no sign of her or of a breakfast cart. I went into the bathroom but she was not in there either. I looked around the room and noticed that her clothes and her purse were gone. I could not believe it. I stood there in shock. She had ditched me. For the first time a woman had ditched me after having sex with me. I was usually the one to make that type of move and now it was happening to me. I was in complete astonishment. Then the astonishment turned to anger because she fled before we had a real chance to talk about serious matters. I wanted to ask her about Jared. I knew that he was mine. He just had to be. And this was my chance to talk to her about it, and I'm sure she knew that. She was avoiding that conversation. I was not going to let it slip away so easily. I picked up the phone and ordered room service. I was going to need a lot of coffee to get through this day. I took a hot shower and ate breakfast and thought about everything that had happened the night before. I was becoming aroused just thinking about her in my bed.

A couple of hours later I was in a car on my way to her home. I was not going to let this slip through so easily. This needed to happen now because I was tired of it.

"Why did you leave? "I said as soon as she open the door.

"Matthew, I can't. Let's just leave it at that. We had a nice night together and soon Melissa's wedding will be taking place and I will never see you again. " she said lying to me. I knew there was more to it than that and I was done playing these games.

"I am not going to take that for an answer. You know what I want to know are you going to tell me?” I said as I began to push my way in.

"Not now. Jared is inside. Please I do not want to cause a scene in front of him. He won't understand. Please come by later tonight and I will have Jessica pick him up and take him to her house so that we can talk,” she said pleading with me.

I looked at her for a long time and then I finally said, "I will be here at seven. And I expect some answers," then I turned and walked away.

She was right about not causing a scene. I did care for Jared and I did not want his first early memory of his parents to be one of fighting about whether or not I was his father. So I complied with her request, but I was coming back for answers later. The next couple of hours were excruciating waiting for seven o’clock to come around.

GINA

I spent the entire day practicing what I was going to say. I paced up and down the house feeling nervous and I wished that I had just told him that morning. Now I realized that I had dragged it out and that was not good for my nerves.

“How are you going to tell him?” Jessica asked as she swung by to pick up Jared.

“I don’t’ know. I’ve been practicing all day and I still do not know how I am going to tell him. The thing is I think he already knows. He just wants to hear me say it. I’m sure of that.”

“Call me if you need anything. I will have my phone on me. It will be okay, you will see.”

“Yes, you are right. Thank you,” I said as I kissed Jared and gave Jessica a hug.

I didn't think that waiting around for the biggest conversation of my life to get me worse but it did, there was a knock on the door at 6:30 and I assumed that Matthew was early because he did not want to wait anymore. I open the door and was surprised to see Melissa standing there. What was she doing here? Had Matthew told her ? Was she here to lecture me and throw me out of her wedding?

"Gina! I have something to talk to you about can I come in? "Melissa said as she rushed past me not waiting for an invitation in. I panicked and looked around outside to see if Matthew was anywhere nearby. I did not want him showing up when his sister was here. I did not see him. I close the door and turn to talk to Melissa.

"Hi Melissa, what is it?" I asked her feeling very nervous.

"You're not going to like it. "She said as she sat down on the couch.

Her words made me nervous and I had no idea how much she knew. Did her whole family know about Jared? her whole family know that I had spent the night with Matthew? The anxiety was getting to me and I did not know how to deal with that other then to get her to talk faster.

"Go on, "I said as I sat next to her.

"Well the groomsmen that you were supposed to stand up with in the wedding had to cancel at the last minute. Danny is absolutely livid with him as it is one of his friends. Of course I'm annoyed with it because it messes up the entire wedding party. I'll have to change the table seating. I don't think Danny's going to be able to find another groomsmen soon..."

I let out a breath of relief as she rattled on about the intricacies of the wedding. I was safe. She was not here to lecture me on my life and on keeping my secret for so long. I looked at the clock and was counting down the minutes to 7 o'clock and was hoping that Matthew would not be early. It was Very nerve-racking situation as I listen to Melissa go on and on about the wedding then she said, "so I am going to need you to stand up with Matthew. I hope that is OK. I know that he is super tall and most girls don't want to stand up with him because of that. But you know him better than any of the other bridesmaids as we practically grew up together so I assumed you wouldn't mind. "

"No, of course not. I would be delighted to, "I said knowing that it could very well be that Matthew would not want to stand up with me. After our conversation today I might not be in the wedding at all therefore it did not matter. I continued on with the conversation about the wedding until Melissa suddenly stopped and looked around the apartment and said, "oh! Where is your son? I'm so sorry I've been so wrapped up in the wedding that I didn't even ask when I walked in. I would love to meet him, "she said smiling.

"Actually he is with my sister Jessica. You remember her right? "I said.

"Do I? She used to cut the hair off all of our Barbie dolls!" She laughed. I left with her remembering be fond memory of our childhood and playing with toys. Everything was such a calm storm now that was about to erupt. "That is a shame I really wanted to see the little one. Please feel free to bring him to the wedding, especially the reception. He will have a good time, "she said as she stood up. I looked at the clock it was 650 and Matthew would be arriving any second. I walked her towards the door trying to encourage her to leave. But she always turn back around with some small detail that we could talk about later, but she was annoyingly bringing up now. Then I finally got her to leave and I shut the door right after she stepped out to prevent her from coming back in. I went back inside and rushed to the mirror and fixed my hair and pinched my cheeks. The clock read 658 and I could hear Melissa's car driving off. I sighed in relief. She was gone and now the next Jenison family member would be at my doorstep at any second. The good thing about Melissa stopping by is that it got me distracted from over analyzing this conversation that I would need to have with Matthew and I felt a little bit better with no time to think about it. Instead I would just deal with it as it was in front of me. I looked at the clock again it was 7 o'clock he was right on time as there was a knock at the door. I moved through the living room and stop to check my clothing and make sure that I looked all right and not the chaotic mess that I felt on the inside.

I opened it and Matthew came right in. He did not say hello. He didn’t even wait for me to invite him in. He just walked right in and said, "Are you going to let me know or not Gina?"

"About what?" I said knowing precisely what he was discussing.

"About Jared. He's mine would he say he isn't? I knew the minute I saw him. He looks precisely like me. I don't comprehend why you could keep this from me?"

I started to cry and did not know how to manage this. Matthew was quiet and not irate which stunned me much more. He was dependably and comprehension individual yet this was enormous.

"I'm sorry Matthew. I'm sorry I kept it from you. I discovered when you got drafted to the NBA. I didn’t know for weeks after our night together. I swear to you. You had a chance to play NBA and I didn’t want you to despise me or your child for messing that up for you in anyway.”

"Goodness Gina, that could never happen. We would have made sense of an approach to work it out. Just as I’m going to make it work now.”

"What?! What do you mean?" I asked.

"I need you to marry me please. I need us to be a family. You and Jared move in with me in Hollywood. It's as it ought to be and what I need, in the event that it is the thing that you need."

"Gracious Matthew. Yes, it is the thing that I want however shouldn't something be said about your profession? The media won't be nice to you and they will make it an embarrassment that you abruptly have a child," I said feeling frozen. "Jared and I could in any case destroy your profession. I don't need that. I couldn't stand it in the event that you loathed me or Jared."

He giggled and snickered and I took a gander at him confounded. "What is so amusing? This is not a joke," I said.

"Gracious sweet Gina. That is not how Hollywood functions. Don't you know embarrassment just makes you more celebrated and with more popularity comes more fame. There is not a celebrity in Hollywood that has as of now been through one. Beyond any doubt it is intense when it happens yet after it passes nobody recalls the embarrassment. So don't stress over that. We will be fine. I cherish you and I need you and my child as a family. Kindly don't deny me that," he said.

"Goodness, I see."

"So will you?" he inquired.

"Yes, Matthew. I will," I grinned and embraced him.

I could not believe that this was actually happening. I did not think that my dreams could actually come true and that the father of my child would want us as a family. Not only would he be saving us, he would also be saving me from a miserable life that I had here in the small town. I could quit my job and pursue my dreams. Jared could go to the best schools and we would live in a cultural city watching Matthew play on the basketball team. It was more than I could've ever asked for and it pushed aside my fears that Matthew wanted to take him away from me. It was the opposite of that and I was forever grateful. We hugged and kissed and had a beautiful Night together. I called jessica and asked her to bring Jared home. When he arrived I told jessica what had happened and she was happy for us both and welcome to Matthew to the family and then she left to give us time.

Jared played with Matthew, as he had already grown familiar with him. But now we would need to tell him that Matthew was his father even though he was still young and would not really know what was going on. Eventually he would get used to living with Matthew and seeing him as his father. I was so happy that I could bust with joy.

The next day was Melissa's wedding.

"Are you sure you want to do this? Are you sure you want to go to the wedding together?" I said as I looked at Matthew trust in his tux. He looked absolutely stunning and I wanted to rip it off of him.

"Yes, I do. We are standing up together anyway so no one will think anything of it," he said. Then he continued, "besides I want to let everyone know later at the reception, but I don't want to steal the day away from Melissa. Let's let everyone know later towards the end of the reception. "

"Yes, OK I think that is a good idea," I said feeling nervous as I fixed my bridesmaids gown. Jessica came in to the room and helped me with the headpiece and she was going to stay with Jared. She looked at us both, Matthew and I and smiled. She was happy with the way things were going, and so was I.

We finally left to the wedding and arrived at the small church that we had grown up going to. It was weird to stand there knowing that Matthew and I had attended this church as children, and now we were going to watch his sister become a wife inside of the church all while we had decided that we would be A family. It was a lot to take in. The outside of the church was done in the old mission style and had been there since the early 1900s, which is why Melissa wanted to get married in it. It was beautiful with lots of history to it. The outside of the church was decorated with yellow daffodils and yellow ribbons. It was very elegant and was exactly what Melissa wanted. Inside the church was decorated with lots of candles, more yellow daffodils, and yellow ribbon. The sunlight streaming through the stained-glass windows looked very beautiful on this Saturday morning.

"Are you ready for this? "Matthew said as he looked at me and squeezed my hand.

"Yes, I am. I have been ready for it for years," I said smiling at him. A few minutes later we were walking down the aisle in the wedding ceremony and I could not help to think about us walking down the aisle as man and wife very soon. It made me very happy and I looked up at Matthew and smiled. Finally the Bride entered. I had been so caught up in my own drama that I failed to recognize that this was in fact my childhood best friend getting married. My tears started to fall from my face as I looked at her and her beautiful down. It was a long off-white dress that was fitted against her curves in a mermaid fashion. Her veil had glass beads down her back and her long blonde hair was in a beautiful up do. She looked absolutely stunning Kaman and what's more is that she looked happy. I looked over at Matthew as he stared and happiness at his sister and it only made me love him more. That was the moment that I felt closer to the Jenison family then I had in years. The ceremony was beautiful and lighthearted and perfect. After the ceremony everyone walked to the reception hall which was decorated in the same manner with yellow daffodils, candles, and yellow ribbon. The groom, Danny escorted his bride in and they both seemed very happy as they kissed each other and went through the motions of the wedding reception.

As time went on I was nervous for Matthew telling his parents and he encouraged me that it would not be an unwelcome addition. I was having so much fun at the reception dancing and being silly that I did not notice when Matthew left my side until he came to me and said, "It's done I did it. "

"Did what?"

"I told my parents that I am a father. I told them about Jared "

"You did what!" I said to him.

"I told you it would be fine. They are very happy and excited. They cannot wait to meet Jared. Of course they were shocked, but that is to be expected. They want to know more but everyone agreed that we would talk about it tomorrow and let Melissa have her day. "

I sighed in relief and looked toward Matthews parents who were smiling at me and his mother was crying in tears of joy. I smiled back at them and felt good about our future.

Later in the day we saw the bride and groom off to their honeymoon. Everyone lined the aisle and we cheered and through flowers at them while they left. It was such a beautiful site and I was so happy for Melissa and Danny. I guess I would soon be part of this family and being here for this wedding was important to me.
