Shiftr Book 1

Chapter 1

Arthur couldn’t get a date.

Logically, this didn’t make any sense. He was a reasonably attractive, intelligent, friendly college boy with a sharp wit and an easy-going personality; there was little to not like about him. Sure, maybe he could occasionally come off a bit shy, and sure, maybe he wasn’t much of a party boy, but he was tall, athletic, and strong – overall, still a pretty good catch.

Still, Arthur couldn’t get a date. In fact, he hadn’t been on a date in years, and it certainly wasn’t for lack of interested suitors.

Once more, the above declaration appears to make little to no sense. It was inconceivable that Arthur still had to grumble about his dateless state of being under these circumstances. If there were plenty of interested suitors, even if they were all completely revolting, surely Arthur would be able to stomach a quick dinner with one of them if he was so desperate for a date anyway.

Still, Arthur couldn’t get a date. To be fair, it was entirely Arthur’s choice not to get a date in the first place. He’d tried dating humans before. The last time he’d made a half-hearted effort, something inside him had growled and thrashed until he put up a white flag and gave it all up.

Right, that was the reason Arthur couldn’t get a date. He was part-bear, and he was an awfully picky Bear, at that. Aside from him and Jeb, there were no other Shifters on campus. Maybe it was because of the small size of the college faculty, or maybe Arthur was just extremely unlucky.

“Quit complaining,” Jeb snapped after Arthur had voiced his heart-wrenching woes to him for the eighth consecutive time that evening. “If you’re not going to shut up about it, why don’t you try solving your problem?”

Jeb was Arthur’s roommate, an aspiring comic book artist who also was doing a degree in Engineering. He was a Bear, too, so all in all, he was a pretty lethal combination of artistic, smart, and strong. At that moment, Jeb was attempting to illustrate a rather odd, squelchy-looking monster and appeared very disgruntled at being disturbed.

“What exactly do you suggest I do?” Arthur retorted. It wasn’t as though he could just turn the Bear off. Briefly, he felt a twinge of guilt for incessantly unloading all his frustrations about his relationship status – or lack thereof – on Jeb, but any bad feelings instantly melted away with Jeb’s next suggestion.

“You could try a dating app.”

Arthur stared at Jeb for a good few seconds before he threw his head back and let out a long, half-barking peal of laughter. He was still cackling a full minute later when Jeb threw an empty soda can at his head with worryingly accurate precision.

“You weren’t joking, then?” Arthur grinned, shoulders still heaving with chuckles.

“Why the fuck would I be joking? If I hear another word of how miserable you are I might rip your head off your shoulders,” Jeb snarled. He crumpled up a piece of paper, spun around to face Arthur, and threw it right at his face.

Arthur caught the paper ball and pressed his fist tightly around it, smushing it further. “But a dating app?” he asked incredulously. “I can’t put ‘Bears only’ in my profile on Grindr. That would attract a very different kind of bear.”

Jeb rolled his eyes and turned back to his desk, picked up his pencil and bent over his sketchbook once more. “I’m not talking about Grindr, stupid,” he said. “I’m talking about Shiftr.”

Arthur spluttered. “About what?”

“Shiftr,” Jeb responded calmly. “It’s a dating app for Shifter Alphas and Shifter Omegas to find each other.”

“Sounds like a hook-up app,” Arthur said, leaning back in his chair.

“Isn’t that what you’re after?” Jeb sneered.

Arthur shrugged. The most sexual things he’d done so far had been making out with a few humans in clubs and giving a couple of blowjobs that ended with him feeling mostly disgusted with himself. It was quite apparent to him that he had a specific set of needs that very few people could fill. He was really hoping he could get an at least semi-steady relationship by spring, which was approaching rapidly.

Every spring, Arthur’s body began to change. He would become dizzy and disoriented, his sense of smell heightened, and his body temperature would rise well above feverish levels. Heat cycles were a pain in the ass for Omegas, and he’d had to lock himself in his room and pretend not to smell the Alpha bears in the environment around him that had sniffed him out and found him in order to sate their own instincts. It had been so hard to deny the needs of his own body, and every year it had just gotten worse and worse. This year, he might not be able to control his urges, especially since he couldn’t lock himself in a room in a locked house.

This was the first spring that Arthur was spending in a shared college dorm. Thankfully, Jeb was an Omega too, and he was also straight as a flagpole – meaning the chances of anything happening were pretty low. But Arthur was terrified of attracting Alphas to this college. What if he wasn’t able to control himself? There would be no one around to make sure Arthur wasn’t getting himself into trouble. The truth was, Arthur didn’t want his first time to be with a rabid, instinct-driven Alpha whose hormones were the only thing keeping him interested. And he didn’t want to bring up this problem with Jeb – it might make things a bit awkward.

“What’s the point of a hook-up if it isn’t with someone I actually like?” Arthur asked.

Jeb didn’t respond, too engrossed in his drawing to espouse any more effort on the conversation.

Arthur sighed and reached for his mobile phone. Maybe it was time to give that dating app a try.

Shiftr was, quite possibly, the simplest dating app the world had ever decided to contrive. There were no ridiculous, long-winded questionnaires, almost no space allotted for profile descriptions, and very little to show any aspect of personality. The app definitely needed some improvements, but at the same time, the lack of thought that needed to go into making a profile made Arthur’s life just a bit easier.

What the app lacked in personality, though, it made up for swimmingly in results. After setting himself as “Bear”, “Omega”, and “gay”, and uploading a relatively attractive profile picture alongside his location, Arthur had gotten quite a few messages, including one from a human who’d downloaded the app without understanding what he’d gotten himself into. Arthur had tried to respond in kind to all of them, but the tide of messages blowing in from interested Alphas was so intense he had to set down his phone for a breather.

The app’s notification sound jingled suddenly from Arthur’s phone, which had been resting on his side for a while now. Sighing, he swiped the phone screen to unlock it, and was instantly confronted with a message.

“Hi,” it read.

It was just one word, but instantly, Arthur felt something flutter inside of him. He inhaled sharply, and a sudden wave of a feeling equal parts excitement and apprehension coursed through his system, like a crashing wave over a fragile shore.

Odd, Arthur thought to himself, trying to shake off the strange sensation. It was just a message, after all.

The sender’s name was Blake Miles, and his profile picture – a small circle next to his name in the chat header – appeared to be of him in an open, dark blue button-down shirt as he stood with his arms crossed. He was now offline, but he’d only sent the message a matter of seconds ago. Curiosity piqued, Arthur tapped the name, which opened up Blake Miles’ profile. The picture bloomed and expanded, taking up all the available space on Arthur’s phone screen, and Arthur felt his breath hitch in his throat.

Blake Miles – if that was in fact his real name – had been staring directly into the camera when this photo had been taken. His eyes were a bright, penetrating blue – or were they green? –  and they seemed to be staring directly into Arthur’s soul. His cross-armed stance made him look like the sort of person who sat by himself during recess in high-school and liked it that way, and the sleeves of his shirt has been rolled up neatly to his elbows to display rippling muscles. His eyebrows were slightly stitched, as though he had been about to frown when the photo was taken, and his lips were set in a grim line. Arthur wondered if this Blake Miles fellow smiled at all. He wondered whether he could get him to smile by texting back.

Provocações, irritado, e fedendo a booze.

"Vais desculpar-me, Senhora Isabelle," disse Barrington.

No precisamente nesse momento, a orquestra começou novamente e Eloise agarrou Barrington energicamente.
