Thomas and Michelle exchanged looks before he spoke. “Well sugar, the surprise is that we’re going to go to your grandmothers for a while.” He braced himself for the back lash.

“What! No way. I have plans. The girls and I are headed to Paris this weekend.” Serenity stood up in anger.

“I’m sorry honey but we have to go to your grandmothers.” He told her again as he braced himself for what he knew was coming next. She was bringing out the big guns he thought as her eyes filled with tears.

“Daddy please, can’t we go see grandmother after we get back from Paris?”  She even through in the pout. It always served to wrap him around her little finger.

“No, I’m sorry but that look isn’t going to get me to change my mind this time young lady.” Thomas said giving her a serious look.

“You are ruining my birthday daddy.” Serenity cried out.

“And you, young lady are acting like a spoiled little girl.  I’m very sorry, but this is a life altering trip.”  He ran his fingers through his hair. “You have two hours to pack what you absolutely can’t live without. The house will be locked until we come back.  You will be able to get new things at the mall by your grandmothers.”

Her life was falling apart!  It was ruined!  Why did her parents hate her so much? Serenity thought as she stomped her way to the bedroom. It was obvious even to her how childish her actions were. Yet at the moment, nothing else mattered as the door slammed behind her. “Oh my goodness! Breathe Serenity, breathe.” She told herself. Once the feeling of dizziness left her, realization hit. What was going on? Her father had never been so forceful before.

One hour and fifty minutes later it was all done. “I’m ready.” Serenity muttered as she reached the landing of the stairs.

“Good, did you pack your carry on sugar?” Her father asked and after shooting him a glare she pointed to the bag besides the rail. “Perfect, because that’s all you’re taking.  They will ship the rest of our things to us later.”

Her jaw dropped. “Why the hell did you make me go pack everything then?” Her chest was heaving up and down in anger.

Yet he just shrugged. “Just needed to keep you busy sugar. Until it was time to leave.”

Chapter 2

To say the ride on the airplane trip had been a tense one, would be an understatement. Serenity kept to herself opting to plug in her headphones as she faked falling asleep. She was not ready to forgive her parents for changing her plans. When they arrived in Montana, Serenity was still very upset.  A huff escaped her lips upon remembering they only had carryon luggage. That made the exiting process faster and now here they were, greeting her grandmother.

A frown marred Serenity’s features. How long had it been since she last visited? Six, maybe seven years? Serenity was very surprised to see her grandmother looking really good for her age. Had she secretly gotten plastic surgery? The thought of it alone brought a smile to her face. She hoped to have inherited the genes that would make her look that good in the future.

After their reunion, they headed out to the house.  Her grandmother lived in a beautiful area that was surrounded by woods. Serenity figured it was because of her job as a photographer of wild life. Some of her greatest work had been in issues of Time Magazine as well as other big name nature magazines.

A squeal made Serenity look up in time to see her cousin Amanda running out of the house to greet them. “I’ve missed you so much.” She screamed before her body was engulfed in a strong pair of arms. “How are you?”

“Unable to breathe.” She squeaked out. That only made Amanda laugh, as her grip loosened. Once Serenity composed herself she looked at her cousin. The girl was just as pretty as she remembered.

“I’m very upset that they made me come here. I wanted to go to Paris.” Although she was happy to see her family it was apparent that the words sounded bitter. Even to her own ears, but plans had been made with her friends. Why couldn’t they understand that she was old enough to make her own decisions?

Amanda gave her a halfhearted smile as she tugged on a strand of her hair. “Well, you really needed to come.”

“So I keep hearing.” Serenity muttered as she followed everyone into the house.

That night, they had dinner and Serenity tried her best to have fun. Amanda’s mom had made Lasagna. That had been one of her favorite dish as a child. The conversation during the meal had been light as they caught up on what was new with the family.

Serenity had been shocked to hear that Amanda didn’t date much. Not that she had either. Her father had always been adamant about the no boys rule. It hadn’t mattered, sine no boy had ever turned her head.

When the meal was over her father addressed her. “Honey, now that we’ve eaten. The time has come for us to talk seriously with you. I need you to listen very carefully to what I’m about to say.” He looked very worried. “I don’t even know where to start.” Once again he ran his fingers through his hair. That was something he did when worried or stressed.

“Why don’t you just blurt it out? Tell me what was so important that you changed my plans.” Serenity said in irritation.

Her father cleared his throat. “We have all kept a secret from you. Yet now that you’re 18. The time has come for full disclosure.” She heard the moment her mother started to cry softly to her right, but her eyes were fixed on her father. A feeling of dread took hold of her.

“Is someone sick?” Serenity asked in a trembling voice. That only caused her Aunt Tilly to join her mother in the crying. Her eyes sought them out before returning to her father. “Who’s sick dad?” His response came in the form of a raised hand. She assumed it was a way to silence her.

“There will be a full moon tomorrow.” Her father said as he walked from one side to the other.

His words made Serenity frown. “What the hell does the moon have to do with someone being sick?” Her patience was hanging by a thread.

“Watch your language Serenity. It has everything to do with who’s sick. The moon has an effects on certain beings.” He said as he turned his back to her. “It’s you Serenity my precious daughter. You are the one that’s sick.”

Serenity was taken off-guard and was unsure what to say or think. Everyone was quiet as his words spun in her head. “You have to be kidding me! I know I’m sick. I’ve only been taking medicine my whole life.” She couldn’t believe what was happening. Was this a joke? It didn’t take long for her to notice that no one was laughing.  What in the worlds was happening? “Just spit it out dad, tell me what the hell’s really going on!”

“You’re a werewolf.” He said the words so fast Serenity questioned if she had even heard them correctly.

“This is not funny.” Serenity glared at her father, feeling irritated once more. It was then that her mother stepped in.

“Honey, listen to your father.  He’s not joking; our family has been living here for centuries.  We decided to leave and give you a normal life, knowing we would need to come back when you turned 18.”  Serenity was speechless and was just looking at everyone.

“Holy crap, everyone went insane at the same time!” Serenity was sure her family had gone crazy. Then Amanda came and grabbed a hold off her arm and yanked her outside.

Once outside Amanda screamed. “You are such a spoiled brat. I think your parents made a mistake by taking you away. They should have told you who and what you were a long time ago. Instead, they let you grow up to become spoiled and self-centered.”

Serenity tried to yank her arm from the tight grip. “I am not a spoiled brat. You guys are the crazy ones.” At this point Serenity was done with all of their games and could care less what her father wanted to tell her.

“Uncle Thomas, I’m sorry. This is the only way she’ll believe.” Serenity glared at Amanda as she tried to yank her arm from her grasp again.  It was then that a sickening noise made Serenity face her cousin. Amanda’s face was contorting into the most gruesome thing. The most awful bone cracking noises started again causing Serenity to scream in fright. Then all went dark.

When Serenity finally woke from the fog she was in, she looked around and found herself on the couch. What happened? She was trying desperately to remember what had happened. It didn’t take long for the memories to rush back into her head and she screamed. “I’m a fucking wolf!”

She heard the pounding of feet as a voice said. “Listen honey, I know it’s a lot to take in at once. Yet the truth is that you will shift for the first time tomorrow.  That’s why we had to come back.” Mom tried frantically to explain.

“You have got to be fucking kidding mother.  Why the hell would you keep something like that from me! I’m going to be covered in fur.  This is just fucking great.” What the hell was she supposed to do with all this?

“Hey, watch your language young lady.” Her mother scolded disapprovingly.

“Why? I’m a freaking animal.”  Serenity said before crying uncontrollably.  “Why me, why me, my life is over now for sure. Who the hell is going to want a dog?” The thought alone had her crying even louder.

“Honey, I’m so sorry. We need to talk about what’s going to happen in your life now.” Her mother said trying to comfort her. Serenity was done.

“Leave me alone.” She said as she ran to her room. Once there the flood gates opened once more. After what seemed like an eternity she sobered then cried some more. It was the only way for her to mourn the loss of her future. Let’s face it, the thought of being covered in fur made her cry even more.

The next morning, somewhere on the other side of the woods…

He was running as fast as his paws would go.  His heart was pounding and the only sound audible was that of the blood rushing in his ears. That is, until he heard it. The sound of breathing and it was far closer than he was comfortable with.

“Faster, must go faster. Must reach the trees.”

“I know I have to go fast, shut up. Your talking is interrupting me.” He screamed back to the voice in his head.

Must not let them reach us.”

“Listen, I just told you that you’re distracting me. Now shut up.” He once again reprimanded the voice. The silence was all he needed in order to push his body for the last drop of speed. When he finally reached the trees he thanked the powers that be.

Then he turned and spotted the three large wolves coming closer. His wolf started to howl.
“We beat you, we beat you. Who’s the fastest runner in the world? I am!” He
chanted in exhilaration
.

“Very funny Logan.” His best friend Ricky said sarcastically. “You know you always win! I don’t know why you make us race you.”

Logan howled in laughter. “It’s fun for me Ricky.” He pounced on his friend who was now, not happy at all.

“You are the only one who has fun.” complained his other friend Rene.

“Can we go home now?” Kevin huffed out as he tried to regain his breath.

“You guys suck.” Logan Hank said to his friends still high on his triumph. He was happy. How could he not be happy? He lived in the best patch of land in Montana. His father was the Alpha of the pack and the old man was still so full of life. That was more than alright with him. It meant he would not be Alpha for quite a long time.

Logan was happy just having fun and doing his duty for the pack. Not to mention that he loved giving his friends Kevin, Ricky and Rene a hard time. Yes, life was good indeed. He was 20 years old and had no cares or worries at all. He walked over to the river for a drink and couldn’t resist looking at himself in wolf form. His jet black fur seemed to gleam in the sunlight.

Logan heard a simultaneous, “oh brother.” His friends made him smile. It seems his mind link was open and they had listened to his thoughts. Logan turned his head and gave them a wolfish grin. His happy time was cut short when his father mind linked. “Logan, stop playing around. I want you and the guys to come back to the house this minute. We’re having an important pack meeting.”
