My uncle holds up a gun. “One more word son, and I blow your brains out right in front of her.”

I stiffen and Blade squeezes my hand.

“Why are we here?” I whisper.

“Why? You put me in
prison
, you little whore. You came out, taunting me with your little body then dobbed me in. Do you know what I have been through? You ruined my life; I have nothing left, no money, no family. Now, I am going to ruin yours.”

“Please, I will give you money.”

He laughs angrily. “It goes far deeper than money.”

“Just tell me what you want?” I scream.

“I want to see you writhe and rot, like I had to.”

A cold icy feeling rushes over me, and I swallow. Something, deep down in my soul tells me, he isn’t going to let us go.

“Please…” I whimper.

Blade stands and my Uncle raises his gun. “Take another step son…go on.”

Blade leaps towards him and the gun goes off; I scream as Blade drops to the ground, blood pours from his leg. I grip him and pull him into my arms; my Uncle is panting. His eyes are glazed over.

“I am going to watch you both starve, watch him bleed out, then I might kill you.”

That is just what he does. Four days we are locked in that tiny room with no food and minimal water; we are growing desperate. Blade’s leg is infected, and he comes in and out of
consciousness
. He is deteriorating, fast. We have no way out; no one would even have a clue where to look.

On the fifth day, my Uncle comes in looking…bored. He twirls his scruffy hair around a finger and glares down at me. He is dangling a lighter off his fingers. He steps forward and I grip hold of Blade, shuffling backwards. Throwing his head back to laugh, he drops down on one knee before me and looks deep, deep into my eyes.

“I just wanted to say goodbye, let you know who it is that caused your death, wanted you to see my face as you perish. I will be your last thought.”

“Please…just shoot us now and get it over with.”

“You thought I would make it easy? No, I am going to take you out in the most painful way. This house is doused in gasoline, and every window, door and entrance is barred. I hope my face is in your mind when you leave this rotten earth.”

He turns and walks. Blade sits; his face is beaded with sweat.

“Angel, we have to get out.”

“He…He…is going to light it on fire.”

“Next time he comes in, we are going to jump him.”

I hear the far off sound of flames and my blood runs cold.

“There isn’t going to be a next time.” I whisper.

I stand and peer out the window; I can see my Uncle in the yard laughing. The flames are tearing up the side of the old run down house. I shake the bars; it is no use, they are jammed on.

“Fuck, come on.” Blade cries, gripping my hand and hobbling with me out the door.

There are vacant halls, and we run from room to room looking for an escape. There are none. Every escape is heavily barred; every item of the house has been taken out, so we can’t even undo anything. The smoke is coming in thick and strong, heavy and hot. I am coughing, and Blade is choking. The smoke is too much.

The crackling sound of the fire is closing in, like a thousand whips cracking. Blade runs me around the house, frantic and desperate. He looks up and spots the man hole. With no question, he shoves me into it and then lifts himself through with a pained roar, I know it is taking every small amount of strength he has left to do this. The roof is a brief escape from the smoke, but there is no exit. No window. Nothing.

“Maybe I can smash the roof in.” He whispers.

We scurry around, looking desperately for something to hit the roof in with. There is nothing; he has thought long and hard about this. Blade is weakening; his strides are faltering and his head is drooping. His leg is slowing him. I pick up a small, rotten piece of roofing and slam it over and over into the panels. It doesn’t budge.

I begin to tear it with my fingers, my skin ripping off as I try hard to pull the house apart. Blade is on his knees, panting. The smoke is filling the room now, invading our lungs. I scream, desperate, I don’t want to die. I kick and kick; it’s not helping, we are trapped. Blade takes my hand and heaves me down onto the floor.

“It’s no use.”

“Blade, no.”

Blade takes my cheek in his hand. “If this is our time Angel, it is our time.”

“NO!” I scream.

I stand again and rip my hands to pieces breaking and pulling at bits of wood. The roof is creaking now as flames slide up the walls and into our safe space. We can’t go back down; we can’t get out. I fall to my knees and scream.

“Fight Blade, why won’t you fight?” I scream, running over and shaking him.

“Angel, we are trapped.”

“NO!”

I grip his shirt and scream desperately, wailing and pleading to be released. When the smoke becomes so thick I can’t breathe without choking, I know it is lost. We are done. The room is so hot; sweat beads our skin and turns it a vicious shade of red. Blade takes my hands and pulls me close to him.

“Angel, before…”

“No, Blade, we aren’t going to die.”

“Angel, I want to say…from the moment you came into my life, you changed it. You changed my family; you changed me. I love you with every part of me, and if I am going to die, I am glad it is with you because Angel, moving on with a life, that you aren’t in, nothing could be more painful than that.”

I am sobbing wildly; I let Blade pull me into his arms as the smoke rises higher in the room, and suddenly, peace washes over me, peace that I haven’t felt in years and years. In fact, a peace that I haven’t felt for my entire life. Blade pulls me close to his chest, and his breathing is
labored
.

“Blade, I want you to know…” I gasp through the thick smoke. “You are the love of my life; if we die here today, we die finally having closure.”

“You changed me Angel, now, I will move on with you so we can live with no pain or fear. You will take me to heaven, where you belong, and you will make me fit. You always make me fit, you complete me.”

I sob into his shirt; my mind is becoming hazy, foggy even. I can hear the roaring of the fire around us, but I can no longer smell smoke. I am falling into a peaceful place, where nothing hurts. I am going to a place where there will be no pain, and I will go there with the one person who makes me whole.

Blade came into my life in the most unexpected way, but he completed me. He taught me about love, family and friendship. He put the pieces back together; he made it all make sense. I know, without a doubt in my heart, that he fixed me. My uncle didn’t win, because I am going out with the one thing I can’t live, or die without.

“Forever.” I whisper against Blade

s mouth, as I kiss him one, last time.

The last thing I remember, before darkness steals my body away, is the feeling of Blade

s body against mine, the sound of his heart pounding against my chest and then slowly coming down to a steady beat. Our bodies drift into oblivion, to freedom, with not an ounce of pain. The day Blade stole me; he changed my life forever. With one last heaving breath, I let the fire take us and our souls. Our hearts combined; our lives stolen.
