It was 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday the 21st of June 2011. The sky was blue with not a single cloud, and the sunlight made everything look as if it were new. Paul parked up his black Trans-Am outside the Roswell UFO Museum. Draylon got out of the car, stretched and drank in the fresh air.
“What brings us here then Draylon?” asked Paul.
“You were looking for adventure. I thought we could take a look in the library and try to find some inspiration.”
“That sounds good to me.”
They made their way inside the museum, paid the entrance fee and headed to the library. Draylon still felt uneasy when he saw the model of the alien autopsy of 1947. When they arrived at the library they were greeted by Katrina.
“Hi guys, how are you? I recognise you both, back so soon?” said Katrina with a warm friendly smile.
“Hi Katrina, yes, it's fast becoming a habit. My name is Draylon and this is my friend Paul.”
“Nice to see you again, how may I be of service?”
“We were hoping to take a look through some of your books. We're taking time out, kind of an extended holiday, and were looking for inspiration.”
“Inspiration of the extra-terrestrial kind I take it?”
“Absolutely, my friend here is a reformed sceptic as of late.” said Draylon grinning at Paul.
“Really, why the change of heart Paul?” said Katrina intrigued.
“I saw a UFO crash into the sea, I recently met an alien-human hybrid, and I was brought back from the dead.” said Paul smiling back at Draylon.
“Really!” said Katrina laughing out loud. “Well help yourself to the books, and let me know if I can help you with anything.” Katrina walked back to her desk smiling.
Paul and Draylon started browsing the many shelves of books, hoping something would jump out at them. Draylon suddenly felt cold, his hairs stood on end and he could see his breath. He turned to see the apparition of Grindor, the ghost that met his end in 1947. Grindor reached out and touched his finger to Draylon's forehead, and in a second he vanished. Paul turned to look at Draylon.
“What's up? You look like you've just seen a ghost.”
“How right you are.”
“No way!” said Paul in disbelief.
“Yes way.”
“Well what did he want? Did he say anything?”
“It was strange, he was very cryptic. He said that what we seek is in the Amazon Basin, hardly specific.”
“Weird! Well we now have our inspiration. It looks like we're going on an adventure.”
Draylon approached Katrina and asked if she had any books relating to the Amazon Basin. Katrina was only too happy to help. She walked straight over to the bookshelf and pulled out a large brown dusty book. As she opened it Draylon could smell the pages of the age-old thing. Katrina flicked through the pages until she found a section on UFO sightings in the Amazon. She handed the book over to Draylon with a smile.
Draylon sat down with Paul looking through the book. They were mesmerised by the depth of information and the amount of sightings over the massive area of the Amazon. One sighting in particular stood out. It was seen by a few members of the Achuar tribe on the Pastaza River in the Amazon Basin. The sighting described a disc shaped craft crashing into the dense forest. The tribe's people thought it something to do with the Pelacaras, evil spirits that stalk the forest. Therefore none of the tribe dared go near the site where the object went down. Draylon was intrigued.
“I have a feeling about this particular sighting. Do you fancy a trip to Ecuador my friend?” asked Draylon.
“Sounds like a plan. We'll have to go shopping for supplies though. There are mosquitos, wild animals and tribes that aren't friendly to visitors. If we aren't well prepared we could wind up lost or worse.” Paul realised what he had just said, forgetting that with Draylon he had nothing to worry about. “Ok, I forgot about your abilities for a second. But I'll still need protection from mosquitos, and I'll need fresh water.” said Paul, a little concerned.
“Don't worry, well get everything we need.” said Draylon with a smile.
Draylon replaced the book and thanked Katrina for all of her help. They made their way outside of the museum. As they got outside a man walked past and trod on a beetle. Draylon got down to his knees, he looked saddened.
“What are you doing Draylon?” asked Paul a little baffled.
“That man just trod on this beetle, he's in a lot of pain and dying.”
Paul put his hand on Draylon's shoulder, “It's just a beetle, why are you so upset?”
Draylon replied, “It's not just a beetle Paul. This is a life. A life that is just as important as yours or mine. This beetle has a family, it has hopes and dreams, albeit not as glamorous as mine or yours, but it wants to live, and it has a right to live.”
“I am sorry, I never really thought of it like that.”
Draylon reached out and touched his finger to the beetle's crushed body. He closed his eyes, slowed his breathing and focused. In seconds the beetle started to walk, it was healed and as good as new.
“Life is precious my friend, to all things.” Draylon smiled. “Come on, let's go and get some supplies and start planning our trip.”
They headed off into the city of Roswell. In minutes they found a store that stocked everything a person could possibly need for camping. They bought insect repellent, sun block and anti-malarial drugs for Paul's health. A compass so as not to get lost, maps of the Amazon Basin, sunglasses, two pocket knives and a couple of torches. They also bought some basic cooking tools, firelighter's and a first aid kit. They both decided to buy new clothes for the journey, lightweight trousers, long sleeve shirts, hiking boots and rain gear. To finish up, they bought sleeping bags, hammocks, backpacks and masses of energy bars and dried food. They would get some bottles of water closer the time. Paul mentioned that it's going to be difficult trekking with heavy back packs on, Draylon assured him that he would carry most of the weight, Paul smiled.
The afternoon wore on and Draylon suggested they book into a hotel for the night. Paul pointed out the perfect place and laughed. A sign on a large white rectangular shaped hotel, read âThe Extra Terrestrial Arms'. Draylon laughed, “Perfect!” he said. They went in and booked a room with two single beds, a large TV and access to a computer with internet connection.
They went up to their room and Paul wasted no time logging onto the computer and planning their journey to the Amazon Basin. Within the hour Paul had all of the flights arranged. Time was getting on and they both decided to rest up for the evening.
“I'm really looking forward to this little trip, it's going to be quite an adventure.” said Paul, excited about the journey.
“It'll be beautiful. I'm very much looking forward to the fresh air, the forest, the wildlife, especially the crocodiles.”
“Crocodiles! I never signed up for that,” said Paul, suddenly a bit concerned.
Draylon laughed out loud, “We'll be fine my friend, I shall take good care of you.” Draylon laughed a little more.
“I think I'm going to need a bigger knife,” said Paul seeing the funny side.
Draylon went a little quiet, and then said, “I miss Adriana. I haven't contacted her since we left Easter Island.”
“I've spoken to her a couple of times, but not for a while now. I'm sure she misses you too.”
“Thank you. I think we both made the right decisions, now definitely wasn't the time for a relationship. Maybe there will never be a right time.” Draylon sighed.
“You never know. Time will tell. Everything will work out as it should, I am sure.”
“Good night Paul, not long now my friend.”
“See you tomorrow,” Paul yawned, closed his eyes and went out like a light.
It was Tuesday the 28th of June at six a.m. Paul's alarm went off. Today their journey to the Amazon Basin begins. Draylon put on his pale green army style lightweight bottoms, and a light blue long sleeved shirt, followed by his waterproof hiking boots. He then styled his spiky brown hair and stood to take a look at himself in the mirror, he looked like action man. Paul put on his khaki lightweight bottoms, his black long sleeved shirt, followed by his waterproof hiking boots. He then took his turn with the mirror whilst parting his short brown hair, “Pretty cool!” he thought to himself.
They both checked out of the hotel, went to their car, and loaded up the boot with all of their belongings. They then found a diner; Paul ordered himself toasted bagel and a pot of tea, and Draylon ordered four slices of whole wheat and a large strong coffee. When they finished, Draylon decided to go to a local newsagents to stock up on energy drinks. He found a shop just a short walk away and to his delight they had his favourite, Monster Ripper. He bought twelve cans and walked out of the shop with a big grin on his face. Paul suggested that they get a move on because the flight was at 10:30 a.m. and they needed to be there two hours in advance.
They got into the black Trans-Am. Paul started it up and sat there listening to the engine, it purred like a kitten. He then put his foot to the floor and dumped the clutch, and the car spun out onto the open road roaring like a savage lion. They arrived at Roswell airport and parked up the car. Paul asked Draylon how long he should put on the ticket? Draylon replied that he had better pay for four weeks, because he was unsure as to how long the journey would take. They then grabbed all of the belongings that they needed for the trip, locked up the car, and made their way into the airport.
They checked in, went through customs and sat in the waiting areas. It was time to leave, so they boarded the plane and found their favourite seats on the rear of the plane. Paul mentioned again that the rear of the plane is statistically the safest place to be, Draylon smiled. The plane took off, they were on their way, first stop Dallas and then Houston and finally landing at Quito in Ecuador at 11:10 p.m. Paul was exhausted.
They went through customs and then found themselves a comfy bench, and then slept until just after six a.m. the next day. It was Draylon that woke Paul, as he was snoring so loud that it was resonating through the airport. Paul suggested getting a caffeine fix in the café, Draylon thought that a terrific idea. Paul ordered his usually pot of tea and also a toasted cheese sandwich, Draylon ordered two massive mugs of coffee and a couple of bagels.
“How are you feeling Paul?” asked Draylon amused by Pauls exhausted expression.
“I feel absolutely shattered. I expect I'll feel much better after this tea though.” Paul wiped the sleepy dust from his eyes whilst slurping away at his drink.
“Don't worry; you'll have plenty of time to sleep it off when we get ourselves a boat later on today.”
“That sounds divine, I can't wait.”
“What time do we board the private jet?” asked Draylon.
“We leave at nine a.m. It's only approximately an hour to Rio Amazonas Airport from here I think, and then I estimate a mile or two walk to the Pastaza River from there.”
“Perfect! Well done, you've done a great job organising the trip so far my friend.”
They went through customs again as is the procedure and then boarded their private jet bang on nine a.m. approximately an hour later they arrived at Rio Amazonas Airport. They went through customs and then exited the airport and trekked towards the river. When they arrived at the river they managed to hire themselves a boat. They hired it for a couple of weeks as Draylon had no clue as to how long they were going to be in the Amazon jungle. The boat was an old wooden thing, probably big enough for a small family. It had a large canvas canopy for protection from the weather and a fairly new looking motor on the back. Draylon paid for extra fuel and also purchased several large bottles of water from the trader.
Once they had unloaded their belongings, they lifted anchor and then untied the boat from a wooden post. Draylon started up the motor and they were off on their journey along the Pastaza, toward the mighty Amazon River. Paul wasted no time in stretching out to relax, he felt exhausted from the journey and was well and truly jet lagged.
Draylon drank in the fresh air, closed his eyes and stretched his muscles. When he opened his eyes he was in awe of the beauty all around him. The sun shone brightly and caused the water to mirror off images of the trees on both sides of the river. The sky was a perfect blue with not a cloud, birds were singing and everything seemed in perfect harmony. This truly was nature in all of its glory as God intended.
Draylon gently manoeuvred the boat letting Paul enjoy his nap. He reached into his backpack and pulled out a Monster Ripper energy drink. He tugged at the ring-pull and opened it up. The fruity smell lifted all off his senses, and he put the can to his mouth and drank. The sweet nectar glided through his body, it was like ambrosia, the food of the Gods. Draylon was having a great time.
At six p.m. Paul eventually woke from his extended nap, and he was feeling hungry. He looked up and smiled at Draylon, thankful that he had been so kind to let him sleep for so long.
