For a moment they were still and silent, letting their pleasure ebb slowly. A lingering warmth spread through her limbs as Kara still held on to Tam, not yet ready to pull away.

Headlights swept over them and dazzled her. Kara came down slowly and found herself back on the street where they were half hidden, only a few feet from the pavement. They kissed again, smiling into each other’s mouths. Clumsily, she unfolded herself and pulled her clothes straight, while Tam leaned against the wall and rolled his head to look at her.

‘Does this mean you’re looking for a new band then?’ he said, reaching out to brush a tangle out of her hair.

Kara laughed. ‘I suppose it does,’ she said, before catching his hand and planting a kiss on the knuckles.

‘You know, I might be in need of a singer.’

‘Oh yeah?’

‘Mmm.’ He leaned in to kiss her again. They couldn’t get enough of touching each other. As though all the words in the world could never equal the feel of each other’s hands, mouths, bodies. As though they’d been dying of thirst and their kisses were clear, cold, sweet water. Kara pulled away at last. She smiled. No rush. They had all the time in the world.

‘The thing is,’ she said, tugging on his collar thoughtfully, ‘I do most of my songwriting in bed.’

‘Yeah? I think I can handle that.’

‘And I’ve just blown the biggest chance I ever had of cutting a record.’ Kara bit her lip.

Tam nodded. ‘Yep. We’ll have to work hard to get another deal.’

‘Write a whole bunch of new songs.’

‘In bed.’

‘In bed. With each other.’

‘You know –’ Tam kissed her in between each word ‘– that sounds like a plan.’

He slung his arm round her shoulder and together they walked up onto the bridge, with the traffic and the motorway snaking away underneath and the lights of the city sparkling brightly in every direction, sending a steady hot glow of noise and light up into the atmosphere, nearly blotting out the stars. Nearly.

But not quite.
