Peacock's recollections are in Jeremy Hearder's
Jim Plim Ambassador Extraordinary: A Life of Sir James Plimsoll
(Melbourne: Connor Court Publishing, 2015). Hearder recounts that ‘the next day, Bush, after accompanying Nixon on a plane flight, phoned Peacock to say that Nixon had taken the point; he did not want Whitlam to get a boost in the Australian electorate as a result of no invitation'. I am grateful to Jeremy for this reference, which was confirmed by Peacock in an e-mail to the author on 7 November 2014. It should be noted, however, that this author found no documentary evidence at the Nixon Library or in the White House daily diary concerning the Peacock-Nixon meeting.
